Recommended Posts

I have started again copy old Floppy Disks to D64 and see how meny i can do I hove about

200 to slowly go through. Star Commander X1541 cable and trusty 1541 drive I find

more reliable the the 1541 II to use with Star Commander and Pentium 166 in Dos mode.

The XU1541 and CBMxfer have been great for me. Works in Windows, no separate older machine required.

I have old stuff here it works ok i don't have the eyes to make a new cable up and yes there are good windows programs around

that can do a better job. I going through my ham radio disks and looking for a dipole program and there are lots of disks thats

gone rotten with mold and don't turn anymore.

Yes, Star Commander (as well as Windows based software) should work with a 1571 connected through an X*1541 cable, though perhaps it will behave like a 1541 w.r.t. speed and single sidedness.

Are you running the parallel port in SPP mode to make the diode-less X1541 cable work on a Pentium 166? I thought that cable was best suited for 486 and earlier models, and the recommendation is at least an XE1541 cable but if it works for you, no reason to worry. In order to get it to work in e.g. Windows XP though, the very least you need is a XM1541 cable (which happens to be the same as XE1541 but with diodes shifted around).

the x1541 works good any faster computer will kill it, i find its the 1541 II drive that plays up with the x1541 the drive will stop reading.

I've gone back to the 1451 II drive for transfering floppy's to D64

The 1541-II, 1571, and Indus GT have been my best tools for image reading and writing.
