What causes brown label doubling

Recommended Posts

Usually when I get an early brown label title there tends to be some slight doubling in the text. One like it should and the other is the darker text. Usually it's always of the same title and style.

But today I got a educational system cxl4001 cart with a brown label but the black double printing shows a Dorsett printing which seemed strange cause it wasn't the same style as what is printed originally. Any idea what causes these double printings let alone what would cause a different label text under the regular text

It is one of the Atari EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM MASTER CARTRIDGE stock that Dorsett bought and put their label over and the light filtering through the Dorsett label caused the image, bleaching/fading the Atari label where the Dorsett label was light colored and less where it was brown. The Dorsett label just fell off. You can see one with the label still on and one with the label removed in this picture. From this post. post-10340-0-29257000-1320524888.jpg

Usually I see this on games like centipede. Where there's double text. When it faded. I'll see if I have a spare copy when I get home

Looks like a over printed label...As time and handling wear the top layer you get to see what was originally printed..

I have some error label EDUCATION SYSTEM MASTER CARTRIDGES that are missing part of their text/graphics due to manufacturing problems; this effect is totally different.

It is the dark brown color of the Atari label fading, not wearing off. When originally produced, most of the brown Atari labels were a very dark brown, almost black color. The brown Atari labels are very susceptible to fading when exposed to sunlight, that is why there are so many with lighter variations of labels, it all depends how much sun exposure they have had. His cartridge had the Dorsett label over it, then was exposed to sunlight and over time the areas under the lighter color of the Dorsett label faded faster than those under the darker brown parts of the Dorsett label which finally fell off or was pealed off. Please see the pictures in my previous post. You can see a more dramatic effect on Roklan cartridges were someone had put a sticker/price tag over part of the label, then after it faded and the sticker is remove you see the label underneath is closer to its original color.
