What have you actually PLAYED tracker for 2017 (Season 10)

Recommended Posts

Here are my times for this past week (January 30th through February 5th)...

Arcade:

Cheeky Mouse - 32 min.

Tutankham - 207 min. in 6 sessions

Intellivision:

Tutankham - 6 min.

Online (non-eligible):

The soul driver - 3 min.

My main game this week was once more the arcade version of Tutankham, where I finally managed to beat the 4th chamber. I briefly tried the Intellvision version again, but quickly gave up because it's just that unresponsive. I also played another arcade game, Cheeky Mouse, which is still of that flavor where the colors change with every new wave.

Finally, I played an online game named "The soul driver" which is a bit like Excitebike in a way. I only briefly played it because it's not that good in my opinion.

PC98:

Gloria - 250 minutes

Kizuato - 250 minutes

Ragnarøkkr - 200 minutes

SNES:

The Lawnmower Man - 1750 minutes

Windows (95/98):

Gloria - 100 minutes

Well, bit of the same as last week but whatever. The main focus of the week for me was The Lawnmower Man, which we're still working on a possible speedrun of as it would be fun. The main this practiced was the sidescroller and driving segments, as they're the biggest PITAs out of the group of PITAs that is The Lawnmower Man. The sidescrollers, the big thing was glitching. I mentioned "The Lag Cannon" last week, where you overload the amount of sprites on-screen causing enemies from tiny dudes to helicopters and other bosses to just not spawn. Some other things that we've found to be helpful have been jump skips - in the 1st and 2nd levels there's a good few bits which you can just jump over/past through using momentum or other little bounces to jump places like rooftops or ledges where you shouldn't be able to go, essentially skipping a few bosses which saves a good 15-20 minutes with how we're doing right now. With the driving segment, well it's just a pain - there's a few bits which can just kill you outright setting you back a few minutes, and the enemies are a bit unpredictable from what I've done so far making it an issue where you have to figure out how cars feel like behaving. So yeah, lots of death happened and the guy I'm running with may have threw a controller a few times, but it's all in good fun.

On the PC98, the week was just really random VNs. Kizuato got playtime as I continued where I left off last week, getting more and more of the endings - I think I have most-all of 'em, so I'm calling it quits on the game. If you can come across a copy or emulate and read the dialog, I'd say give this one a shot if you're into story-based stuff as at least for me I liked it a good bit - apart from divi-dead, I think it's one of the only adult/horror titles that I can say were actually enjoyable instead of just random sex/gore and a bad plot. After that one was done I picked up Gloria which is a bishōjo (pretty girl) eroge VN thing. If you know japanese VN devs, you know that seeing C's Ware on the start probably means porn - yep, this falls into that bit. The plot revolves around two dudes who are students at MIT who get the opportunity to tutor girls at the Gloria estate with one jumping at it because money and hot chicks or whatever and you controlling the other guy - you can probably already tell what it's set up to be. Everything is menus, with you clicking on options now and then to change what happens. Again with the massive amounts endings, according to the manual with the discs there's 45 endings, but with this one I don't know if I'll stick through for all of them as I can't find myself all too interested in the plot. I pulled out the Windows version alongside the PC98 one to compare the two, and really there's not much of a difference apart from an uncensor of explicit stuff and an english translation. In the end, this is just another adult title on a disc featuring a few minigames which unlock scenes and stuff, maybe some people would want it but I can't much say I care for the thing. Finally, there's Ragnarøkkr, which I've had an interest in for a few months now actually - I bought this one back when I was visiting relatives over in Japan at a store for ~$5 or so with a box and a seperate soundtrack disc (which is pretty solid - I like the music) and I grabbed it. The dev is one I rarely see, Glodia, and the only thing I know they put out was Emerald Dragon which I thought was a pretty solid X68000/Super Famicom title. The game is an SRPG revolving around a kingdom, and the plot is fairly generic with you just fighting evil for what I've got out of it. Nothing crazy for the story, but it's a solid RPG with (in my opinion) a great soundtrack backing it.

Just something I noticed, it's pretty enjoyable with what I've been doing gaming-wise so far this year as for some reason it's actually a good bit fun to play two very different styles (in this case VN vs a quick sidescroller/FPS/etc.) of games. It's nice to be able to swap from something fast-paced that I'm getting pissed off at to something slower where I get to think and try to make more of a connection to the game - maybe I'm just being silly, maybe it is good, I have no idea but eh that's just how I've felt about this stuff. Game.com is coming out for next week as a coworker wants to mess with mine for a day, other than that it'll probably just be more Lawnmower Man and random crap I pull out.

My times for the week:

NES:
Flappy - 176 min.
Genesis:
Davis Cup Tennis - 145 min.
SNES:
Hit the Ice - 124 min.
Beat Hit the Ice on the equivalent of Medium difficulty (setting 2 out of 3), and cleared 25 more levels or "sides" in Flappy, bringing me up to 130 of 200.
Otherwise I did some testing with Davis Cup Tennis to try to understand how the ranking system works in that game and, by extension, its SNES counterpart.

I played alot of the same games as last week with just a few additions, but the real highlight this week was giving my new Watara Supervision a spin :) I only have 2 games (2 more should get here next week) and they really aren't all that bad, P52 gets repetitive but is ok, I've managed to beat the US campaign but the European campaign is proving to be a pita lol, and Crystball is a pretty good breakout clone. There's some ghosting when things get moving fast but as long as you have good lighting it's not too bad. Anyways so far I'm liking it :)

After rebuilding my test system, I actually got a chance to play this week (I blew up the power supply on my regular test/play system last week while testing some new hardware I built, so I wasn't able to play until I fixed the, thankfully minimal, damage). :)

TI-99/4A

Break Free: 60 Minutes

Super Demon Attack: 20 Minutes

My list for the week...

Atari 2600 (all emulated):

Keystone Kapers 22min (really having some fun with this game... but once those carts start going fast, I don't last long...)

Yars Revenge 12 min (I used to have this one... I also used to be better at it, I think...)

Atari 7800 (all emulated):

Mario Bros 52 min (liking it more than the arcade version actually... without the cutscenes explaining how to play, it plays faster... controls great)

SMS: (Hey, some of these are on real hardware! lol)

Alex Kidd in Miracle World 17 min (slowly getting better... lose most of my lives at the stupid paper/rock/scissors boss fights)

Altered Beast 27 min (never got past the second stage... was getting to where I was doing pretty good on the first one, though)

Master of Darkness (emulated) 32 min (had fun with this answer to Castlevania... will challenge it more at some later date)

Psycho Fox (emulated) 10 min (don't think I ever got past the first level... took a bit to get used to the jumping... might try to play it more)

SNES (all emulated):

Actraiser 35 min (easy to spend a lot of time on this one)

Parodius Nonsense Fantasy 45 min (I was actually laughing at this game...)

Genesis (emulated):

MUSHA 60 min (love the music in this game...)

And now for the big one... lol

Playstation (emulated):

Suikoden II 26 hours even

I don't know how I managed to be at right about 22 minutes into the hour on both this week's and last week's totals for Suikoden II, but it made the math easier. :) If you've played the game, I'm just a little past the Luca Blight fight. I think I probably over prepared for it with most of the characters in the three part fight being around level 40, but it made the fight a bit easier. I have 87 of the 108 characters recruited. I've probably actually played a little longer than the listed time, because I was doing the trick where you save, then check the vendor to see if they have the item you want, and if not, resetting and starting again from the save to check again. But it's easier to just go by the time on the save file than to remember to start the timer and do the math. I may be able to finish this up this week, but we'll see. I have an interview this week so maybe I'll have a job again soon. :)

This will probably be a fairly short post from me this week since I have to run off to a doctor's appointment in the very near future, but here's my household's times for the week nonetheless.

Total Play Time This Week
1,558 minutes (25 hours 58 minutes) [943 minutes eligible]

Individual System Play Times This Week

GameCube: 596 minutes

PlayStation: 367 minutes

Game Boy Color: 245 minutes

Sega Genesis: 142 minutes

NES: 99 minutes

Atari 2600: 90 minutes

Game Boy Advance: 19 minutes

For me this was another week mostly spent playing through Star Fox Adventures on the GameCube (I'm about 77% done at this point according to the in-game status log), though the arrival of Pac-Man: Special Color Edition for the Game Boy Color in the mail did give me something new to play that I got in a few games of here and there. I also tried out the GBA ports of Doom and Doom II on the GameCube's Game Boy Player just for giggles, because I've always thought that any system (GameCube included) instantly becomes at least twice as cool if it has the ability to play some version of Doom, and somewhat to my surprise the original Doom for the GBA actually plays quite well and doesn't look too bad on the big screen via the Game Boy Player. Doom II felt like it had a little bit of control lag when played on the Cube, but the original was smooth as silk.

Getting back to tracker eligible stuff, as you may have noticed from the picture a couple EverDrives for the NES and Sega Genesis arrived in the mail this week too; but they are my wife's and I wasn't terribly interested in playing much in the way of NES or Genesis this week. I did put the NES EverDrive to good use for a little while by doing a few games of my favorite NES/Famicom title Summer Carnival '92: RECCA though, and set the new HighScore.com world record in the process. More info on that here. Lastly, to cap off the week I did play an hour and a half of Millipede on the Atari 2600 for the high score club this week. I was in a bit of a gaming funk this week and having a really hard time motivating myself to play Atari (or pretty much anything other than Star Fox Adventures), but I figured I should at least put in an appearance in the 2600 high score club so late last night I ended up pretty much forcing myself to play Millipede even though I didn't really feel like it. But hey, on the upside of things my score was good enough to nab 2nd place for the week so that's something to be happy about. :)

As far as the misses' gaming time this week goes, she finally wrapped up and finished off Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation on the PlayStation. Her final thoughts on the game were that it was quite a bit better than Tomb Raider III, but not as good as the original Tomb Raider (her personal favorite in the series) or Tomb Raider II. She said the ending left a lot to be desired and was pretty irked that after hoarding grenade launcher and explosive crossbow ammo for the last half of the game in anticipation of the final boss fight there ended up being no boss fight at all at the end, but the rest of the game was fairly solid in spite of a handful of overly cryptic puzzles that required referencing a strategy guide along the way. With Tomb Raider 4 out of the way she then set her sights on the Genesis with the plan to play through all the original Sonic the Hedgehog games over the coming weeks, and this week she took care of the first game in the series (and got all the chaos emeralds by the end no less). The only other game for her this week was a couple minutes of Smash T.V. on the NES to try out the new NES EverDrive, which she did have fun with but remarked that she should probably get a second NES Advantage to play it properly.

That about covers everything for this week! Next week's forecast predicts a 98% chance of Star Fox and scattered appearances of Sonic the Hedgehog, with the distinct possibility of a Final Fantasy front looming on the horizon as the spousal unit contemplates what PlayStation game to delve into next. :)

Deathtrap Dungeon would be a decent follow-up, IMHO.

I thought so too and recommended it to her after she finished Tomb Raider II last year since I already own a copy of it, but she thought the controls were way too laggy and sent Deathtrap Dungeon back to the shelf after the first 2 levels. There's one Tomb Raider game on the PS1 she hasn't played yet (Tomb Raider Chronicles) but I think she's taking a break from the series for the time being to play some other games before coming back to the last Tomb Raider installment.

(Super) Game Boy (Not sure if you count Super Game Boy differently from Game Boy)

Donkey Kong (1994, 60 min). Interesting game. Interesting platforming with some neat jumps you can pull off. Puzzle elements are good, but I suck at puzzle games. This would have been a really cool game to release on the NES in the 80s, but I guess no one had the idea for it yet.

Here's the summary for Week 5, running from January 30 - February 5. We logged 8291 minutes of eligible play, playing 74 games on a total of 22 systems.

Top 10:

1. Lawnmower Man, The (SNES) - 1750

2. Suikoden II (PlayStation) - 1560

3. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 505

6. Gloria (NEC PC-9801) - 250

6. Kizuato (NEC PC-9801) - 250

8. Tutankham (Arcade) - 207

9. Ragnarøkkr (NEC PC-9801) - 200

10. Flappy (NES/Famicom) - 176

Pre-NES top 10:

1. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 505

2. Millipede (Atari 2600) - 484

3. Tutankham (Arcade) - 207

4. Pole Position 3 (hack of Pole Position 2) (Atari 7800) - 60

9. Pac-Man (Atari 2600) - 37

10. Killer Bees (Odyssey^2) - 35

Top 10 systems:

5. Arcade (415)

6. Genesis (402)

7. Sega Master System (306)

8. NES/Famicom (295)

9. Game Boy Color (245)

9. Watara SuperVision (245)

It's not as big as other recent weeks, but Week 5 still makes it into the all-time record books at the #10 position.

We end up with three different systems atop each chart as, though the SNES's Lawnmower Man wins the top individual spot, the PlayStation just edges it out (by a margin of less than 1%!) for the overall platform title. Meanwhile, Kaboom returns to the top of the pre-NES charts, as well as the overall Top 10.

Finally, we get a first-ever tracker appearance from the Watara SuperVision, which manages to crack the top 10 on its debut. Having name-checked the SuperVision just a week before, I guess I should invoke another system and see if it materializes: the Gamate, maybe, or the Hartung Game Master?
