+Cafeman #1 Posted May 9, 2003 Gamecube Burnout. 60fps, fast, good visuals, great hook -- driving dangerously fills your burn meter (turbo). But I am forever stuck on the 2nd championship!! There are 3 tracks here -- the first is easy, the 2nd one I *finally* can beat but sometimes by burning a continue, and now the 3rd one ("USA Gridlock") I cannot defeat! I have finished Gridlock but never have I come in first place. Anyone have any tips? I seem to suck at this game! (_)
ultravi0let #2 Posted May 9, 2003 i finished gold in all the chapionships on the PS2 of Burnout2 and have how 'up-graded' it for the XBox version. i find manual gears works realy well, and try the faster cars which handle badly as the gap you create before you crash helps you to still be in the leed. +Cafeman #3 Posted May 16, 2003 BUMP. I completed Burnout (the original one) for GameCube last night. As with all racing games, familiarity of the track and some powersliding skills made it easier as I progressed. Some thoughts on the game -- I hear that Burnout 2 is improved over Burnout in every way, but Burnout itself impresses me. At first play, you notice that rather simple car models, but that isn't the focus of the game so it is acceptable. The focus of the game equals driving into oncoming traffic and drifting to build up your Burn ("Turbo") meter, and of course learning what parts of each course to watch out for to avoid a crash. Burnout's tracks are teeming with traffic, more traffic than in a game like Crazy Taxi. You have to watch for red lights -- this means that traffic is crossing perpendicularly to your path and you must not sideswipe vehicles. The real 'rush' of the game comes from unloading your burn meter (sometimes twice or three times in a row!) on long straight stretches that exist on some courses, all the while driving in the oncoming lanes! Once I figured out the simple 'trick' of centering my car over the white lines which separate lanes, I started to have far less crashes. This is because the oncoming vehicles are in their own lanes and you can usually just drive 'between lanes' --- except when the vehicles swerve to get out of your way! Decent game and now I can soon trade it in for something else. It seems to me there aren't many Burnout fans here?
+-^CrossBow^- #4 Posted May 16, 2003 Hmm..I don't have this either of the two games yet. I have a PS2 though, and I noticed last night that Burnout for the PS2 is now on the greatest hits list. Meaning it only costs $20 bucks at Wal-Mart to pick up new now. Is it worth this price? My oldest son really likes to watch me play games, and he seems to enjoy driving games the best. He loves Test Drive on our PS2 and I was pleasantly surprised by this title as well. So, Burnout fans...is this a game that a Test Drive lover should grab? I am not into the simulation racers much and much prefer the simpler control, smooth graphics, and speed rush you get from playing simpler arcade style racers like Rush 2049 on my DC or Test Drive on my PS2. Heck Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit on my PC is still about my favorite racer of all time!!!
+Cafeman #5 Posted May 16, 2003 I bought Burnout used for Cube at $17.99. Plus I had an EB discount card, so I paid even less. It was well worth it. I have not played the PS2 version (I assume they are mostly the same). But on the Cube, Burnout is always 60fps, has long draw distance (no pop-up or fade in), is very fast. There aren't a whole lot of tracks but the tracks are very long and unique. You'll race the tracks forward and back in different Championships, and sometimes alternate paths open up in different races. Some championship rounds are "marathons", where they cleverly link a couple tracks together into one mega-long track! I'd recommend Burnout for under $20. But myself, I'm looking to the $39.99 Burnout 2 now, which has more gameplay modes and better visuals. In fact, some have told me that Burnout 2 is a spiritual successor to Outrun. Now THAT claim I'll have to see for myself.
+-^CrossBow^- #6 Posted May 16, 2003 Ahh..yes...Outrun. One of the main reasons I picked up my Power Base adapter...hehe... Funny you mention how Burnout ties tracks together...because Test Drive does this very thing as well. At first I didn't notice it...but then after about the 3rd or 4th race I began to recognize areas that I had just raced in the 1st or 2nd races! That is when I got hooked...because it told me that the tracks in Test Drive are actually just segments of a huge layout that you actually race on. The last race in the game is pretty much all of the tracks in the San Fransisco portion of the game all strung together....

I love the game on PS2 and finished it.. is the XBox version better? More tracks? Rasty.- i'm about half way through it now and the there are some differances like custom soundtracks so you don't have to lisern to that sh*te 'country-rock' stuff anymore, the graphics are mildly cleaner and there is more custom paint-jobs for the cars. plus a couple of new secret cars. as for tracks, at the mo i haven't found any; but there is more 'Crash' zones now [30 in total]
