Shawn #151 Posted March 8, 2017 (edited) Think I'll go with the first Super Mario. It's a milestone in gaming and still holds up to this day. Doing the turtle trick on world 3-1 is so addictive. The difficulty at the end is still a challenge to this day. Ever done it too many times and got the "You're Gready" screne? I did back in the day just trying to see how many men I could rack up. 128 men and then it kills you IIRC. I tried to find it on google but couldn't. When you add one, that number becomes 10000000 [80] which the game logic interprets as -128. On the condition that the life counter is less than or equal to zero after your life counter is decremented, you get a GAME OVER event. Later ports of Super Mario Bros for All Stars SNES and SMB Deluxe GBC, slightly tweaked the timing on the koopa stomp 1up trick by one cycle, such that you could bounce on the shell forever (normally you lose a pixel every hop until Mario falls off). They also closed the loophole by adding a proper three digit life counter that simply stops at 127 or 128. New Mario Bros 2 I believe stopped at triple crown, or 1110. Andromeda Stardust #153 Posted March 11, 2017 Wonder what a poll for "What's your favorite Zelda?" would look like. In many ways, they are parallel. SMB1 would parallel the Legend Of Zelda, SMB2 would parallel Zelda 2: The Adventure Of Link, and Super Mario Word would parallel Zelda: A Link To the Past. As for Super Mario 3, not sure. It has no Zelda equal, with similar arguments for it being the best or not. Somehow I missed this post. SMB1 <-> Ledgend of Zelda SMB2 <-> Adventure of Link SMB3/World <-> Link to the Past SMB64 <-> Ocarina of Time (first to 3D; open world exploration) Sunshine <-> Wind Waker (water everywhere) skips a few years... Mario Odyssey <-> BOTW (return to free world exploration; both are spiritual sequels to the first 3D entries...)
