Super Cobra

Winning a hotly contested poll is Super Cobra a classic scramble style game, can't remember if ends of gets harder the 2nd time through or just continues... [will check!] It doesn't - last time orpheuswaking managed 3 times through. On the final stage you need to do collect the "[$]" to complete it otherwise it will wrap around. Fairly tricky game to start with but it's the same each go so you can make improvements.

Scoring based on distance "Miles" (not score)

Restart from the beginning each time and no autofire!

Info on Atarimania which has a US and European version listed, wonder if the latter is PAL adjusted? [same]

Bonus Scouting Mission Play any similar Scramble style game (Horizontal scroller where you destroy things on the playfield (not just a shooter like DropZone), that has not played in the HSC before and report back on it. So this excludes the fabulous Beta Lyrae and the more than decent Dawn Raider but you could check out Air Strike I / II and many others. The HSC Ratings & Records lists all games played (apart from Super Cobra for some reason!). See atarimania's horizontal scrollers list for some ideas :)

Round ends Sunday 5th March 10am UK time

Missed Rounds If anyone missed Round 1:Super Pacman or Round 2: Mr Robot, you can post scores on those threads, or wait until we have a catch-up round later in the season.

Have fun blasting!

p.s. Round 4 will be Rally Speedway - some of the HSC guys are putting some tracks together using the construction kit, details here and no practicing!!

I downloaded both and ran the Linux tool cmp which does a binary, byte by byte comparison. It reported that the PAL and NTSC ROM files are identical, so I suppose the difference rather is packaging than ROM content.

Bonus point:

Copter Cave by P. Häggström 1983.

http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-copter-cave_19139.html

Apparently unknown origin, as not even the authors behind the newly released book "Svensk videospelsutveckling från 50-tal till 90-tal" have mentioned it. Rather fast, and a bit random placement of baddies which means one round can be fairly easy and the next one very tricky to go through the caves. Smooth scroll as expected, perhaps not overly polished like a commercial game should've been even by 1983's standards, but surely a 3/5 in my book compared to what other Swedish programmers managed to release during those days (I'm mainly comparing to the high praised Space Action by Arne Fernlund for the C64 in 1984)

I played for 10 minutes, but may certainly play more of this inbetween rounds of Super Cobra. Best score so far 18000 pts.

Reading the thread from last time we played this game there is a flaw in the scoring which lead us to play for distance instead

Thanks McKong - I need to add this to my HSC spreadshset as it is missing. I'll update the first post

Bonus Scouting Mission Update...

Glad to see a few Scramble clones being tested (not just shooters like Drop Zone), players will each get a bonus point for finding one and reporting back - looking for comments about the games, their difficulty and their suitability for HSC play either as a main game or a bonus game? Ideally scores for graphics, sound and playability out of 10 - This is also a chance for everyone to get into the hallowed HSC record books :)

Guys... this is pointless. Last level loops endlessly....

Super Cobra: 38450 (last level finished 5 times)

We're going to play for distance/miles not score, to complete the last stage you need to collect or bomb something (I can't remember)

I've updated the first post with more info :)

You mean THIS thing? :)

12,000 miles completed.

And FYI, you do get an extra life for completing the last level...it just doesn't show up in your "lives remaining" but it's there. :)

So far 17,100 @ 4000 Miles, need to make it past that orange bit!

Bellum is a really good game in the same style so if players get bored of Super Cobra and their own pick we could add this in as an official bonus game? Bellum is completable / it doesn't repeat...

Crashed getting the $ at 10,000 miles :_(

Anyone struggling to find a game for their "Scouting Mission" checkout Atarimania's Horizontal Scrolling List - ideally want a scramble style game where you shoot the playfield not just a blaster.

Chopper looks interesting:
