Updating the F18a Using a CF7+?

Recommended Posts

I want to update the firmware on my F18a, but It's been a while since I've used my CF7+. Can someone give me the instructions for getting the disk image and update file onto the CF card and mounted with the CF7+? I don't want to mess this up.

On PC:

I just did this and Matt has made it pretty easy with his distribution http://codehackcreate.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/F18AUpdate_v18.zip (extracted list attached Pic 1).

Took the 400K file, F18AUpdate_CF7.dsk and moved it over to the directory I have dsk2cf in. Told it to mount it to volume 1 (Pic 2).

On TI:

You'll have three files (Pic 3). Then just load and run via E/A, ie DSK1.F18AUPD

Took maybe 3 minutes staging files, erasing, and then writing? Just be sure you heed the warnings about no power interruptions during the process.

Hope that helps =]

So you just need to move the F18AUpdate_CF7.dsk file to the CF? I wasn't sure if that's all I needed or if I needed any of the other files in that zip.

Like I said, it's been a loooong time since I've added any files to my CF card. I seem to recall using a program called TI99DIR the last time since it was a GUI interface.

EDIT: I found some instructions from retroclouds on how to use TI99DIR to move files (http://atariage.com/forums/topic/156995-cf7-for-ti994a/?do=findComment&comment=1927197):

1. In the left window: right-mouse click on directory path line and select "read CF7A+ volume list" from the context menu
2. In the left window: select a target volume
2. In the right window: select ".." to move outside disk image
3. In the right window: Press "F5" to copy the image to the CF7A+

Yup, a very easy process I did my other F18A I am using for my all in one with this method. since I already had the 1.8 on the Nano I just needed to plug it in and run it.

Odd question. I'm trying to use TI99DIR in Linux under Wine. The program seems to work just fine, but I can't seem to make it find the CF card with the games. I think it's being mounted in Linux as /dev/sc but I can't figure out how to get that to show up in TI99DIR. I'm guessing this is something that isn't going to work, but I thought I'd check.

OK, as you're already using Linux, I'd suggest my Java-based TIImageTool; it uses dd to create a copy of the CF card, then allows to open it as any other image. (Link in the footer.)

I'll have to try that. Will it automatically detect my CF card? When I plug it in it doesn't show up in the file explorer in ubuntu. I think it's because ubuntu doesn't understand the format.

likely you will have to set up a device for that in your wine configuration but there's a possibility it won't do the direct access in wine..

if you look in .wine/dosdevices you will need a drive letter in there linked to the device..

No, there is no autodetection. You have to know the device. However, this is pretty easy to find out: Plug in your card, then do a "dmesg" and note the device name in the recent output lines. The device is likely something like "/dev/sdc" (without number).

Yes that's what it is
