Anyone know a good place to buy socket pins from?

I did find both pins and some sizes of carriers at Newark, but they are expensive.

 

It would cost much less to use machine pin sockets, if you don't want the frame between the 2 rows of pins you could use 2 SIP sockets instead of a DIP socket.

 

That is an excellent idea about using two rows of SIPs, but a word of caution:

If you use SIPS I strongly recommend that you plug them into a chip of the same size before putting them in the board.

I learned the hard way that a little angle ( in or out) on the sips after they are soldered in makes for a VERY tuff job of

inserting an IC afterword.
