RGB Mod for Intellivision II is Best?

Recommended Posts

Asking, not telling. I was thinking that an RGB-modded Intellivision II (with flashback controllers) is "better" than an RGB-enabled 2609 unit because the ECS and System Changer compatibility is in the II, so the hardware would only need 1 circuit board mod instead of 2.

What do you think?

Thanks.

There is no ECS compatibility issues with the 2609; is there? The audio chip in the Intellivision II is a little off. It will save you the system changer compatibility fix, but you'll already have it open.

I will confirm that there are no ECS issues with the 2609.

Also, the 2609 can be easily modified to support the System Changer (much simpler than the RBG mod). Just implement that mod when you implement the RGB mod.

Lastly, the System Changer will not work over RGB. This is true for both the 2609 and the Intellivision II. This is because the System Changer sends composite video (or rather composite-like video) to the console's analog video circuitry. The RGB mod bypasses the console's analog circuitry because it hooks into an earlier part of the video processing that is still digital. You can still use the System Changer with a modded console but you will have to use the old RF connector when the console is hooked up to the System Changer (or use the composite connector if you also have implemented the composite mod).

At this point in the 2609 vs Intellivision II discussion, you are left with that the Intellivision II offers replaceable controllers (the default ones are stiff and painful) and that the Intellivision II is incompatible with several games (most Coleco games and Mattel's Word Fun). You can get the best of both worlds by using the Sears Intellivision: it has replaceable controllers that work well and it doesn't have the incompatibility issues (other than some title screens look goofy).

I have a II with Flashback controllers and composite-out mod, and an LTO Flash and ECS and System Changer. thanks for the detail, you got me thinking...
