Fun topic! I was actually just yesterday pondering what my current Top 10 favorite Atari 2600 games would be at this point, since the last time I really put serious thought to the matter was at least a couple years ago and I think my list has changed a bit since then. So, since you asked, I expanded my list to 20 and here's my current Top 20 personal favorite original production Atari 2600 games. :)

So if it's like I only get to choose twenty cartridges, I'd want to group things and cover a few categories.

Need some paddle games, they're unique to the platform.

Kaboom!

Warlords or Super Breakout

Night Driver

Need some multiplayer

Combat (obviously)

Joust

Realsports something. I like baseball.

Arcade ports

Asteroids

Defender

Gravitar

Berzerk

Gotta have some Activision games!

Enduro

Starmaster

Frostbite or Megamania

Pitfall! or River Raid

Some personal faves

Solaris

Star Trek Strategic Operations Simulator

Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back

Frogger

Mountain King

And of course

Pac-Man, Ms Pac-Man, or Pac-Man Jr

And look at that, no more slots left in the cartridge holder. I could live with this lineup if it's all I had.

I never understood Mountain King. I thought it looked cool, but never knew the objective.

I guess you enjoy more obscure games. I should have put Beamrider on mine. I just forgot about it.

It's on my mind because I just discovered this old print advertisement for the first time.

http://atariage.com/forums/topic/263311-mountain-king-advertisement-has-low-charisma/

Alternatively, I'd take Yars' Revenge on my list.

Most of my stuff has been re-released a bunch of times. I really need to dig in with my Atari Flashback portable and play more obscure stuff.

I never understood Mountain King. I thought it looked cool, but never knew the objective.

It's a platform game where the platforms represent ledges on a mountain.

First objective is to collect enough gems (1000 I think), then that makes the flame spirit appear. you can jump platform to platform or use your flashlight to locate dark (hidden) objects like treasure chests.

The second objective is to locate and find the flame spirit once it appears- It is a dark flame that you can't see without your flashlight, except for an occasional flicker. You hear music when you get near it, and the closer you get the louder the music plays.

Once you catch it, you head to the bottom of the mountain to the temple. You can enter from the bottom with the flame spirit and then grab the crown at the top.

Once you leave the temple with the crown, the song "In the Hall of the Mountain King" plays in all it's glory and gets faster and faster. You have to get to the top of the mountain with your crown before the music stops. But there are flying bats that will try to steal the crown.

That's the game in a nutshell. The 2600 version has a fun glitch where if you do a double jump, the second jump can go quite high. You can jump almost all the way to the mountain peak if you time it right :)

My list would probably change frequently...[snip]

I feel like if you're an Atari 2600 fan and you can definitively narrow down your favorites to just 20, it's because you've only played 20 Atari 2600 games. :-D (Either that or the ones that didn't make the cut included the likes of Karate, Skeet Shoot, Sorcerer, and Sssnake. :P ) That's the beauty of the system, though--there's so much out there for it.

Case in point: while most of the lists posted here are comprised largely of some of the usual "greatest hits," everybody has some that stray off the beaten path a little bit. Like Miniature Golf, Mountain King, No Escape, Space Cavern, Dark Cavern, Tunnel Runner, Spike's Peak, GORF, Stellar Track, Bumper Bash, Wabbit, X-Man (ugh...really, high voltage? :P :-D ).

No fair excluding homebrews! :)

But seriously, hmm... maybe these 20:

Crystal Castles

Ms. Pac-Man

Millipede

Stargate

Jr. Pac-Man

Solaris

Combat

Super Breakout

Missile Command

Wizard of Wor

River Raid

Yars' Revenge

Midnight Magic

Kaboom!

Demon Attack

Q*Bert

Video Pinball

Astroblast

Turmoil

Warlords

I'm surprised at how difficult this was. It's not that I had more than 20 favorites I had to choose from, it's because after my first 10 or so essentials, nothing else stood out, so I had to decide what I would be most happy with after having my fill of my most favorites. I think this list would just about do it, though I reserve the right to change my mind later!

Cutting my big initial list of "I like to play this more than once in a blue moon" games down to 30 of my favorites wasn't that tough. But after that....

I'm basing these on a single criterion: it has to be the kind of game that, when I lose, it never stops me from going back to it.

In no particular order:

Yars' Revenge

TRON: Deadly Discs

Berzerk

Battlezone

Solaris

Warlords

Demon Attack

Atlantis

Adventure

H.E.R.O.

Joust

Centipede

Dig Dug

Jungle Hunt

River Raid

Video Pinball

Galaxian

Gorf

Donkey Kong

Missile Command

I'm usually quicker to play the original arcade versions of some of these when possible, but the 2600 versions hold up well.
