Wow why is it so hard for those knockoff clowns using PSP bodies to ever get it right? It's not like running 16bit emulators are a stretch let alone GBA either yet they fail so badly with speed, audio and frame drops. A device like that which bothered to make it right would be fantastic.

I got a PAPKIII and it's flawed, but OK, and certainly better than that red one that has no MicroSD slot and can't hold a charge.

They're all over AliExpress, but since it's hard to tell these apart, here's the Amazon link I used. USA seller which means fast shipping, and probably a reasonable chance of returning it if it's broken. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071J32GLR/

I have that one!!!

I've never been able to get it to work. It just has a flashing grey screen when you turn it on. The console is in mint condition inside and out and the output says NTSC so I don't think that's the problem. Sucks that they go for so much, I bought mine super cheap years ago and was hoping I can find a spare later to swap components rather than return it. Maybe I'll take it to an electronics shop and see if they can figure it out.

I agree your review is great still watching it though (up to gun nac being closed.)

You know a great tester game for crap quality emulation? Gauntlet II. It uses a somewhat unique scrolling method which makes a poorly done emulator not scroll or have a line of junk down by where the info bar(life, magic, keys, etc) is located. Second to that the game is a DPCM abuser big time. All the vocal comments, sound effects for items, dragon growls, etc are all done as recorded samples in that channel along with some standard NES audio too. If it comes out missing, off key, squelched or off key this is a game to really test your video and audio tricks.

I'm shocked that thing doesn't seem to suck.

But how good is the HDMI quality on the TV since you're not direct capturing it?

That looks great, and I like your reviews. Thanks again!

Thanks. For a clone this is pretty good. I'm happy with it concidering the low price.

Ah, thanks for the hint on using Gauntlet 2. I was not aware of that being a good title to check emulation with.

The HDMI out on this machine is really nice and clean however like EVERY Chinese clone with HDMI it uses funky timing which my capture card hates. The TV doesn't seem to have any problems with it though.

No problem. Back in the back half of the 90s under another user name and time I was into the NES rom release scene and also assisted with a few emulators and hacking up headers and files to get old pasofami and iNES header stuff to run. Gauntlet II was a pain in the ass at so many levels to get right with the emulation and I don't know if it's a grossly picky timing issue, but whatever it does it sets off a lot of emulators completely or in minor ways so you can benchmark some decent accuracy from it. I bet you anything that's also why it doesn't show up on those massive multi-rom carts past or present because even old Gauntlet would I think on occasion get included. G2 is just very very picky. The funny thing is it's also similar in respect to original Gameboy as well as it too has a scrolling problem and has all the DPCM audio too.

QQ4U -- how do you get your stuff so quickly? Do people just send you things, or do you jump on anything interesting as soon as it's available? I ordered one of these based on your review, but like most stuff I buy directly from Chinese resellers, it won't arrive for several weeks.

The price is certainly right.

No, I actually buy everything I feature on my show. Not one single bit of hardware was given, loaned or donated to me. It's one of the key reasons why I don't take stuff apart because I sell everything on to get more money to buy more stuff.

It occurs to me there might be a real market for a Mini clone that had high quality emulation and let you load your own ROMs off a USB drive. Essentially, a RetroPie without the work or legal issues. The Retro-Bit Generations came close to this in concept, but in execution exploded like a seagull outside a Mexican restaurant.

If someone setup a Pi box basically and say like ATGames put in the manual that the system does 'SD card loading' and the manual was printed as the same where it says 'find games, download, put them in a /ROMS directory on a SD card' basically you could be onto something. Enough people can't get their heads around setting up Android or they just have a problem with doing it and failed when attempting which make them a turn off, or they pay someone like $200 for a rom loaded box already.

So how do you choose what to get? There's SO much junk on there, and everything takes a long time to arrive. Or perhaps you're better at distinguishing different products than I am. So many of the cheap handhelds look alike to me, and it seems many of them are using several-years-old technology.

Still kinda want a Bitt Boy but they seem to have disappeared.

As far as taking a long time to arrive, I think he's based in Japan, so shipping probably takes a lot less time than it would if he were based in the states or UK. I'm guessing...

I'm always looking for something new and buy about 3 systems at a time. That way at least something will arrive while waiting for the other parcels. Basically, Chinese shipping is bloody awful and takes forever.

I do buy a lot of crap but have been lucky with a few cool items. The next video will feature a Data Frog micro console that looks like Sonic's head.

Awesome. I see that there are lots of tumblrs that feature crazy stuff on aliexpress. I will try to just follow you instead ... I am very susceptible to wanting crazy new crap.

The Sonic head console was released over here by AtGames a few years ago, I think.
