There are also 4 16MB ATR's posted on this forum, which contain XEX's, all games. TOSEC is another archive. Holmes archive. You can bulk download from Pigwa.net using a FTP program. Looking for archives (AKA a zip file as inclusive as possible) or programs for the Atari 8 in ATR and in XEX(or whatever) executable. The Holmes archive isn't what I'd really call well-curated or well organized. It has a lot of duplicate files and "cruft", e.g. badly-cracked games whose crack screens require a particular OS revision (XL or 800 rev B) even though the game itself works on any Atari OS. Also a lot of corrupt files, some truncated, some that look like they've been "cooked" by having the ASCII carriage returns removed (or ASCII carriage returns added after every ASCII linefeed byte). Also multiple "versions" of the same game, slightly different binary load file structure, but they end up loading exactly the same code/data into memory. Or, same code/data except for different cracked-by intros. Basically it was someone's Atari 8-bit collection he'd been adding to for years, and at some point he released what he had as a 3 CD set sometime in the late 90s or early 00s... which hasn't been updated since then. Not saying Holmes is utter crap or a waste of space, but I am saying it should be the last place you look for something, if you can't find it elsewhere. These days, 3 CDs isn't that much bandwidth or storage, you could just download the whole thing. I don't know how people do that on Windows or Mac, but I'm sure a lot of people here do (I use wget on Linux, which does exist for Windows AFAIK). Mclaneinc Posted November 4, 2019 Share Posted November 4, 2019 The Holmes set was what it was, Aaron tried to organise it with sections for genre's and it didn't help with me sending him huge wads of files are real tapes & magazines etc back then, but Aaron also had a love of other machines, especially the Sega ones so archiving it all was as and when, I'm like him now, my collection of digital titles is as disorganised as can be, Aaron's looks like chalk and cheese to my mess of games but like him its down to time and inclination. I got 2 DVD's of interim stuff from Aaron (stuff that was on the later official version) and yes it was all over the place but I was just so pleased to have it. Some of us are simply disorganised folk with little time for 'getting it right'.... And yes, I agree, if you are looking for a game then Holmes is not the first port of call I would have used, Pigwa is nicely set out and sectioned, I'd hit there first.. You can load up any FTP program and download any collection or even the whole site. Just start it and walk away. It’ll take however long your and that site’s bandwidth allows. Homesoft's collection is the cleanest, he fixes issues like 800/XL compatibility, makes them quittable, adds load screens, stuff like that, but it's only games. Fandal also includes demos Atarionline.pl has 3 archives.
