My busted 5200

Recommended Posts

Hello all -

After 8 years in storage, I broke out my 5200 for a test drive and much to my dismay I was having some major issues.

- the visuals seemed ok - i was getting title screens for all games

- sound was terrible - I was getting a constant "white noise" sound from the TV

- controllers didn't seem to work at all - no matter what I pressed I could not start a game. I tried both controllers...

Of course, back in 1995 the system worked fine. Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

PS - I did try my XEGS on the same TV just to confirm and it worked fine. I also tried Channel 2/3 as well (switch on the 5200) :)

Regardless...of which port model...I think the problem is:

1: Your joysticks need to be cleaned and or rebuilt. There are several of us here in this forum who can do this for you. I am one of them.

2: The white noise sound, sounds strangely like an RF coil that needs to be tuned on the 5200. You can probably do this yourself if you crack open the unit and find where the RF cable plugs in...somewhere nearby will be a red cylinder post with copper wrapped around it. Inside is a small screw that requires an allan wrench to adjust it properly. Adjust this in small increments with the unit on until the noise goes away.

Joysticks are easy enough to fix as well...and as far as my quality on that...Albert can speak for me on this...and I don't require any rebuild kits either... ;)
