Has anyone considered taking a temporary job at Wal-Mart (or Target) in an attempt to get one of these systems before they hit the shelf? Around here, there is almost constant hiring for the night crew that stocks the shelves, cleans, etc.

I'm sure you would get fired if U tried to save 1 for your self.

Yep- pretty much all retail stores don't allow employee holds, so any attempt to set one aside would likely get you in a lot of trouble- simply because demand is high enough for it to be an issue. (for low demand items, you generally let it slide provided the DM's not around.)

You'd need a second person you could tip off, who could come to buy immediately after stocking, and not get caught telling them what's up for sale & not having anyone recognize your partner or realize they're buying for you. Probably easy enough for a new hire, but the actual landing the job seems like a lot of work on top of the scheming.

You can contact a buddy to come and purchase the thing and then pick it up from his house after work.

EDIT: never mind I see someone already mentioned this particular scheme that happens on a daily basis across all retail outlets to include thrift stores such as Goodwill and Savers.

43...got one during the melee at Amazon. The wife and Uncle Sam appreciated it :)

I'd certainly buy a couple hundred more if I could get 'em.

So you're an old man that scalps toys? I'm so sorry to hear you are stuck in such a sad situation. As others mentioned, maybe you retired a little too early if you are stuck doing such pathetic things for money. Best of luck to you in the future. Here is hoping things turn around for you and you don't have to flip toys anymore by the time your 70.

Lol, I'd reckon I'm pretty close to the average age on the Atari 8 bit side here. I'm quite comfortable, financially, regardless of your supercilious patronizing attitude. Hopefully, for you, you will be able to retire before your anal polyps metastize and devour what little grey matter remains between your ears.

I have no sympathy for scalpers and admitting it is like admitting you're a cannibal and won't make you many friends. Actually most stores will fire you if they find out you're grabbing stuff before they hit the shelves. This mess Nintendo made just made retro pi setups that much more popular.

The other day I added 777 there to the known juicers list here on the site with a quote of what he said and a link back to the post in question. People can decide if they want to deal with pond scum or not on their own terms, but it's safe to say it needed to be added as a general warning to anyone who comes across that thread.

It's actually pretty damn hard to pull off at a thrift store. Usually the employees doing the sorting are a completely separate crew from the ones doing the stocking, who are completely separate from the cashiers- and there's generally not a super-set schedule for anything, it's just done as needed. So even if you can tell someone something good came in, you can't tell them when it'll be priced & put out, because other people are doing those things on their timetable.

At thrift stores, the big issue is two factors: one, if the store is on the lax side, the good stuff never makes it past the donation sorters. They just take it home. Two, flippers who literally spend their entire day sitting on the couches, watching for the new merch to come out so they can hit it first. There's enough of those at my sister-in-law's store that the routine for stockers is to push out the cart, then run & come back in 10 minutes after they've picked it over & put out what's left.

hasn't everyone?

on a side note I am quite comfortable in my life without resorting to scalping fad's, given the little time and effort given in this venture one could do something productive, while feeling a bit of pride of ones work

for instance I buy crap systems and computers on ebay, refurb them, mod them, then sell them at below market value, It amuses me, it saves machines, it makes people happy, and its bought a couple grand worth of tools and toys, and a good chunk of a new hvac system... bonus people dont instantly hate me (I usually earn that feeling fair and square with my opinions)

I'd be interested in seeing your work. I've always been of the mindset that old PCs are never economical to refurbish. Proving me wrong would put a smile on my face.

As for Nintendo's response... I just don't buy it. To me, it sounds like another iteration of "The Great Chip Shortage of '87"

well it depends on the system, a 800XL or a speccy or even a pre pentium ibm compatible sure, a pentium III dell eh not really

I'm actually after all said and done inclined to believe Nintendo on this. It's not like ATGames goes - these flashback systems are mainly a holiday event. They just make a crap load of them and send them out and as the months roll along they dry up until the next iteration. Nintendo given the release date was clearly looking to both attention whore and also get some holiday cash fast and easy. The error they made was not making enough, that's it, and scalper garbage took advantage of it. Odds are with the speculation around they likely had a contracted run of the things, then went and got an extension and got more out there up until that extension expired (probably end of March at the factory, with a through April retail roll out.) The fact they went from probably 500k units up to 1.5-2M whatever it was says they put a lot more than they intended out. They're still idiots and screw ups, but I don't think they ever intended to make as many as they did and those stupid low figures blew up in their face and anyone else's who got assed out by a scalper. I don't really believe they wanted and intended shortage and a hell of a lot of abuse and negative press over it.

If they attempt a 2nd run next Christmas or this very much only a rumor SNES one, they'll make a hell of a lot more to try and ease up on the abuse.

Around here, at least for Goodwill, the donation centre is separate from the store -- indeed it is located quite a long distance from the nearest retail store. The donations are roughly sorted by category and then trucked to the various stores; indeed, the truck drives past my apartment several times per week.

The staff there would have no control over which store the merchandise is sent to, much less when it is made available for retail sale.

Around here it's a two-prong setup (at least it used to be, I don't know anyone who works at Goodwill anymore)- donate at the store, they throw away the garbage & unsellable stuff. Like porn & ammo. (That did happen once.) Then they price & put out stuff they might be especially low on, with most going to the wherehouse for further sorting & redistribution to the region's retail stores.
