Sony have GBA beat!

Recommended Posts

Just saw this today on the official UK playstation site. A brand new playstation variant, fully portable with a decent screen, minidisc-like game storage and actually more powerful than the PS1 (this thing uses NURBS for gods sake!).

Follow THIS link.

It's about time Nintendo had some real competition in the handheld sector, they've been WAY too complacent of late.[/url]

Holy cow! This thing uses a 1.8GB 60mm optical disc, features a 4.5" 480 x 272 TFT LCD screen in 16:9 aspect ratio, USB 2.0 port, memory stick port, built in MPEG4 codec, and supposedly is more powerful than the original PS1 hardware (supposedly entirely different from the PS1/PS2). No information on form factor, other than the size of the screen and the size of the media and other ports.

Very Interesting. :)

So far, it's all just hype; and they even admit that a working PROTOTYPE is another year away. Does this sound like a threat to the Advance to me? Nope.

Wow, that seems a lot more interesting than Nintendo's GBA :)

And with the outsiders coming on the market, portable gaming is becoming more and more exciting these days :)

Without a working prototype I think it's all hype. Personnaly I think the next Gameboy will probably be about as powerful as the GC. The GC is already very small and has a handle. I'm no engineer (FAR from it!) but I can't imagine it would be hard to shrink it down even more in the future. The media is the problem. I don't think it would be straight away GC compatible because I think those mini-dvds would skip something fierce.

If this thing does come out, I may have to buy a Sony game system. I have never been impressed with the PS or PS2.

Sounds pretty cool, I'd buy one, though it can't and won't replace my trusty GBA.

I'm willing to bet the next GBA will feature at least 64-bit graphics, and use mini discs.

There is already way too much hype built around this just in one day. Its amazingly stupid. Remember the highly hyped PS2 when it was introduced? Don't we all feel kinda screwed now?

I think the portable will give some competition to the gba but it won't make nintendo shake in their lil booties.

The specs for this system is very impressive of course, but does this sound more like a new palm organizer aka a Sony Clie. And we all know how much those lil things cost these days. With all that's built into it, does anyone really think its actually gonna fit in your pocket? Sounds more like a better version of a game gear if u ask me.

This PSP seems to be aiming for a adult audience. How many adults you know carry a portable gaming system with them? Well since it does sound more like a palm, i might be wrong. Portable gaming has always been known as a kid's toy so i'll be surprised if most kids knew how to use any other of its capabilities besides gaming.

And finally, since the word "Nintendo" practically mean video games and the word "Gameboy" means portable gaming, its gonna be a hard long road for Sony to take most of the portable gaming market from Nintendo but its in no way impossible. I agree with most people thoughwhen i say that if there's one company that can take on the gameboy its Sony.

PS - Don't ask MS to a handheld. Imagine how big and uncomfortable that will be to hold.

Nintendo handhelds...losing to another handheld in the market....now thats a good one! Titile this thread "best blonde joke eva!!!" But seriously, Nintendo themselves I read aren't really feeling threatened with a 2004 relased date, and you know this thing is gonna have a hefty price tag, besides the specs arent even finalized.

It might be able to outdo the GBA... but can it outdo the Helix and the N-Gage?

I thought there was a topic devoted to the N-Gage somewhere, but I can't seem to find it. In that case, I guess I'll post this here:

Red Faction for the N-Gage. Check out the videos of the game in action. John Romero (Of Doom, Quake, and Daikatana "fame") is working on it apparently.

Looks pretty good, but they'll need a lot more than this to beat Nintendo. It really doesn't look like anything the GBA couldn't do, but it's pretty good for a first generation game. I don't know about that vertical screen though....

Well, whatever the machine actually ends up like and whatever it costs, it does have one undeniable huge selling point to it that may well be enough to take the competition down.

It will have the word 'Playstation' on the casing.

People who have never bothered with a handheld before may well pick this up. After all, how many of them have a PS1 or 2 at home?

By the way, from what I can tell, this thing is definitely NOT going to be compatible with the PSX, right? In that case, I think it's incredibly misleading to call it the PSP, since that half implies that it can play PSX games. Besides, our old pal Bill has already made a PSp.

(Yeah, I know... three posts in a row in the same topic is pretty lame... I need to go to bed...)

If they could figure out a way to transfer a game to a memory stick. So you just go out and purchase a memory stick to copy your older ps/p2 games to it. That would be cool.

Long live the Game Gear.

Laters,

Josh

I saw the Yahoo story about this. Nintendo's stock down 10% just because of this announcement!

It doesn't suprise me. As compacho said, the level of hype is sickening considering the system is almost entirely hypothetical at this stage. Show me some games and I might cheer the new system on.

This could hurt Nintendo the way I see it. The general public is usually Sony's slave (look as the PS2 launch, they gave America eye-candy and a DVD player and everybody jumped on board.) Un-educated gamers (the general public) will buy this thing if it is hyped. Even if it costs $200.

But Nintendo has survived other hadhelds before. They beat the Gamegear because they had the games. Everybody knew that the GG had the better hardware, but the Gameboy still survived longer. So unless Sony can come up with alot of exclusives, they won't have anything but the hype.

The Game Gear? How about the Atari Lynx, or the NEC TurboExpress? Either of those are superior to the Game Gear, technology-wise, and they both came out before the GG.

Personally, I think I'm definitely going to buy the Sony handheld when it's released, because I love handheld machines (so far I have two Lynxes, a a Game Gear, a Neo Geo Pocket Color, a GBA, and a GBA SP). But technology isn't everything; it's all about the games. And until the Sony system has a game that can top Advance Wars, I'm always going to keep my trusty GBA SP around.

a nintendo neutral opinion, but this is bad news for 2D gaming. The GBA is the last oasis of new 2D games. Once a portable Playstaion hits the market, everything will be crappy asstastic 3D, and i will be a sad monkey :(

Agreed, this is most likely the last of the 16/32 bit generation (PSX is pretty much dead compared to the PS2). Enjoy it while you can.

If Nintendo learned anything from their past mistakes, they'll find a way to counter this threat.
