HSC14 Round 7: Any "Spare Change" ?!

Recommended Posts

Spare Change

Like I said on the poll thread I spotted this one had crept into Atarimania's top 100 and figured someone must think it's good; so let's find out! (rated 7.7)

Fandal ATR

Atarimania Info

[Looks like this is OSA / required translator running]

There appear intermittent issues with Spare Change locking up / screen corruption and slow gameplay on level 2 making it harder than it should be. Fandal is on the case :thumbsup:FIXED VERSION ON POST #43

Bonu$

It was more difficult than I expected finding a related bonus game, we've played the reasonable platformer Easy Money in the HSC's A-Z of gaming so it's a duo of magazine games for some bonus point action (below). I also spotted Run for the Money which is a two player head to head stock market game which looks interesting (yes that was funny) and Money Pouch which looks like a simple educational game for budding mathematicians :)

money_bags_2.gifmoney_hungry.png

Money Bags (Atari User UK) - terrible atarimania rating 3.5 !

Money Hungry (Antic USA) - this one may be ok as it's rated 7.3

plus Dollars from Heaven - see Post #7 for the details - emulator users: this needs "Atari BASIC" selecting

ATR with Bonus games: HSC14 R7 - Bonus Money.atr

Round Closes Sunday 30th April 10AM UK time

Have £un!

For those playing on a real Atari and using a camera to take screenshots, have your camera available and ready as I found the final score on Spare Change will only display for a short period of time.

Edit: I saw that Dollars from Heaven by Steven Cohen is MIA on Atarimania. I found the COMPUTE! book scanned and had a go with cut 'n paste from the OCR:ed PDF. I haven't yet had a chance to tokenize it (those {9 SPACES} need to be expanded) and there may be other typos (e.g. on line 302) but perhaps for fun it can be played.

What a beauty! I don't know the proper way to store files, but this is an ATR image with DOS 2.5 that at least on XL/XE emulation will boot into BASIC. You then load the program with LOAD"D:DOLLARS".

post-5454-0-25968200-1492542086_thumb.jpg

dollars.atr

How to play:

Move the guy to the left and right, collecting dollars but avoiding the bombs that look like flowers. Notice that the guy will do moonwalk when he moves to the right, as the sprite has elaborate animation but never was flipped. Use fire button to jump over the nails in the middle.

When you have picked up three dollars, go back to the store to the right to buy a piece of building material, then go back all the way to the left to start building your house. Now collect another three dollars and repeat the procedure until the entire house has been built. On next level, you will need to pick up four dollars per piece of building material etc, and the flower bombs move faster. If you get enough points, you are awarded an extra life.

Probably not so much HSC material, but fun for a laugh and as I wrote, it is one of the MIA games on Atarimania.

Edit: Anyway, I got to level 3 and 680 pts to have something to aim for.

Addendum: It seems that if you end the level with jumping, there is a chance the game craps out with an error message, so try to avoid doing that.

Ok, I'm becoming quite fond of this game and have developed a decent working strategy: 298,020!

I think with a little more tweaking, I can roll this one.

Money Hungry: 667787 1062 (I love how this one has 6 digits in the score...if anyone can get 100,000 in this game, you're a GOD!)

Spare Change 89,870. Not a bad game eh? Made it to level 2, think I've figured it all out apart from how it levels up - # of tokens perhaps, time to read! Tried to fill both boxes with tokens before the show too but those little bu**ers are sneaky!

Not played the others yet :frown:

p.s. forgot to say last round on level 6 of Crisis Mountain a bird appears!

Didn't find as much time as expected to participate, but at least I got 106490 pts on my first real attempt (22000 pts on an earliest test play last week, so quite an improvement).

If anyone just like me has a SIO2SD but don't know how to load a .BAS file, this is how I did it on my 130XE:

1. Mount DOLLARS.ATR that I created above into D1. It will boot into BASIC with the drive enabled.

2. Change the content of D1 to "Money Bags.bas". I thought it would load as D2, D3 as well but I wasn't able to.

3. LOAD"D:MONEYBAG.BAS" (this is how it appears to BASIC, I found out by typing in an one-liner directory listing)

4. RUN

There may be easier ways to do it, and I suppose an ATR tool that would allow me to merge several BAS files into one image would help some.

Spare Change: If you hit [Escape] to pause the game at the end you can keep your score on screen, press space to continue.

Control-V views the high score table (it saves so make sure disk is writeable) but you'd need to get onto it in the first place!!

The manual is a good read :)

Added an ATR to the first post with the bonus games, and a few others (that we are not playing, including: If you didn't play Easy Money in the HSC's A-Z of gaming see that thread, its fairly good platformer let down by being just too hard)!

NOTE: "Dollars from Heaven" gives an Error 12 on Altirra BASIC so press break and type RUN or switch to Atari BASIC in the emulator settings.

I was wondering why I couldn't beat level 2 and ....

OK GUYS LOOKS LIKE SPARE CHANGE NEEDS OSA/800 TRANSLATOR TO BE LOADED ON XL/XE REAL HARDWARE!... otherwise when you get to the 2nd level you get some graphical corruption - a line or two and for some reason it's also too hard (perhaps your movement speed is not increased as it should be) !

After this I got to level 6 and made it onto the scoreboard 222,930

Money Hungry 645

just downloading the other games now :)

Okay, I was playing on real hardware only, will try emulator tomorrow.

Should have said affects XL/XE - carlsson's screenshot (post 16) shows the graphical corruption on Spare Change. On my 130XE it was ok after using the translator utility ;)

Money Bags - level 2 - 1,960 - random or pattern either way they got me!

Dollars from Heaven - 260 now I need to read up what to do (above) [ahh I knew you needed to go to the left to do something] :D

Money Pouch - just for fun; played on hard but still too simple - a nice game for the little ones with a good tune :music:

It's already a 2 horse race in the next HSC POLL

Now I can confirm this. The problem seems to be with level 2 only. Movements are real slow on real hardware compared to gameplay in Altirra. Higher levels look and feel ok.
