The Wi-Fi connected TI

Now that InsaneMultitasker has helped with the UberGROM serial routines and TIMXT, I did the next step of extending the UberGROM functionality by adding a wifi module to it. I've been meaning to get to this for a while.

 

Of course the Wi-Fly module is buggy, disconnects, there's some dropped characters (we should be able to address that).

 

Ingredients:

 

One UberGROM running at 3.3V

Tim's modified TIXMT

Help from Tursi, Tim, and Jim and likely others

A Wi-Fly module

Plenty of patience and a couple butchered UberGROM boards

 

First attempt, telnet into Heatwave attached.

 

Note, now that we have the code/routines, we have tested serial ports on the UberGROM, the WiFly module, and Xbee should work now too. Think of the damage someone like Vorticon can do with this for his next demo! :)

 

Still a work in progress, but I've been dying over here keeping my mouth shut.

Well now, I think this will interest quite few people. WiFi BBSing without a P-Box or side-car RS-232 device required. I'm thinking more than a few people will want a built unit they'll be able to hook up to their UberGROM.

 

I can't wait to see the links to those photos fixed. Oh, by the way..... +1. :-D

Nice job. I'm working on something similar to hook up to an RS232 and it should be able to hook it up to the UberGROM as well.

I thought something must be up, when we heard TIMXT ported to use the UberGrom TX/RX pins and I think it was you Acadiel, showing a 3.3v regulator attached...

 

Just in time to create buzz at Fest West :) Last year at Fest West, ElectricLab was demoing Stuart's web-browser, and he brought up how killer it would be to have a WiFi cartridge. Great to hear that someone did this.

 

The WiFly appears to be only be 3.3v... did you have to do logic level conversion ?LVC245? to interface to the UberGrom?

For a wired connection, the ubergrom RX/TX/Ground can be connected to a TTL-to-RS232 converter, which can then be connected to a device like a modem or COM port. The converter cost a few dollars, of course, it's not as sexy as wifi ;)

Yep, should work. Tim was testing this with a USB to DB9 converter to make sure it would work (MIDI, his UDS-10, etc) before I did the Wi-Fly.

If Stuart's web browser can simply open a serial socket... well, once we settle on a stable serial to Wi-Fi TCP solution, it's just adapting it to use Wi-Fi. Now that I got it to work, I'm going to evaluate some other solutions that are less flaky than the Wi-Fly.

 

The whole UberGROM was hacked to run at 3.3V. The TI works fine with the 3.3V levels. Just the UberGROM and regulator and some caps and a resistor on the board. I could even put TIMXT in the GROM probably too with Tursi's tool to copy to 32K and run.

 

My GoTek HxC floppy sure made it easier to move stuff over to the real system.

I feel for ya! Imagine for a second... being sworn to secrecy by separate parties, each working on an independent project... with the same end goal. Arrrrrrrgh!

Fantastic work guys! I currently use wireless to wired extender with the UDS-10 for my connections. Not having to use that kind of setup would be a huge step forward.

Same here, but honestly I would like to start eliminating the rats nest of cords and start to streamline things a little.

The Vonets WiFi adapter I use (pictured below) requires the use of a PC to change the settings which is bothersome.

I purchased uds10 some months ago but in true I can't be able to do it working :P

 

Maybe this WiFi method could be more easy to understand how-to ?
