Nostalgic #1 Posted May 13, 2003 The first two Final Fantasy games were recently released for the PS1 as "Final Fantasy Origins." I've been feeling a little "nostalgic" (pardon the pun) for my days as an old-school Ultima fan. I haven't played any FF except the first Legend for the original Game Boy. To anyone who's tried out FF Origins - is it worthwhile?
chrisbid #2 Posted May 13, 2003 its a good disc, it plays a lot better than FF Anthology (the battle load times were really bad on that one). The graphics have been updated to look like their 16-bit sequels, and there is an available easy mode if you arent up to the challenge of the original (wuss ). I will say that Final Fantasy 2 from Japan has an awful system for leveling up.
Gabriel #3 Posted May 13, 2003 I found it very worthwhile. As an old school Ultima fan, one thing you might find distasteful is the linearity of the Final Fantasy games. Unlike the Ultima games, you usually have a certain predestined path to the game's conclusion and deviation from that path is mostly not allowed. Of the two games, Final Fantasy I is the most enjoyable. It has a nice sort of quest with interesting dungeons and just enough inventory management to make things interesting. I am finding FF2 to be pretty disappointing. I feel far too railroaded, and the story being told just isn't all that interesting. Plus, the character advancement system (based around improvement of what abilities you use while unused abilities atrophy) is one of the worst I've ever seen. Even with half the package kind of a waste to me, I find the disc to be worth every penny of the $30 I paid for it. Final Fantasy I has great replay value, and has some nice improvements over the NES release beyond the pretty graphics. If you want to take my recommendation, I say get this game now before it disappears.
ubersaurus #4 Posted May 13, 2003 I don't know about that...FF1 is REALLY boring. You can't even use the "at its time" excuse, because Dragon Warrior was already out, and it was alot more fun. Oh I tried to like FF1 when I got the NES version...but I really think that to like it, you have to be a hardcore FF fan.
Atari-Jess #5 Posted May 14, 2003 you have to be a hardcore FF fan. thats not completely true, being #1 its the first one #2 if it didn't sell, none of the other ones would have since there would only have been the first one Therefore most people who played this game were not "hardcore FF fans" since it was the first one! But now, thats true since the game isn't technically new anymore
ElectricTroy #6 Posted May 14, 2003 The graphics have been updated to look like their 16-bit sequels. Trivia: Sqaure didn't actually upgrade the graphics. These are just emulations of the Wonderswan Portable version (a 16-bit handheld). If you get bored with Final Fantasy 1, just go read this: http://www.nuklearpower.com/archive.php Hilarious stuff! So, why is FF1 boring? Is it the near lack-of-story?
ubersaurus #7 Posted May 14, 2003 It's the near lack of story, its the insane number of random battles, its the constant mazes, overall, the game had a feeling as though they didn't put much of any time into it. It's really not that good of a game in general. I say the real draw of the origins pack is number 2.
