Coleco controller question

I've been toying around with making my own Coleco controller, since the stock controllers give me hand cramps after about 30 minutes. I was thinking about making the controller just with U/D/L/R and the two action buttons, and use a 9-pin y-cable to hook the stock controller in so I could use the keypad. Attached is a quick schematic I drew up of what a controller consisting of just the directions and the action buttons would look like. Would this work? Thanks all!

I use a Y cable with an Atari 2600 compatible "500XJ EPYX by Konix" controller attached, and it works fine, so what you suggest should probably work as well.

Regarding the Y cable: any Y cable should work or it has to be designed specially for the Coleco? I mean, can I make one with two port expanders?

The "Coleco" ones are quite expensive, at least the ones I find in eBay

My Y connector was made for the Atari, but I've used a Genesis Y cable in the past (although, I've heard from others that SOME Genesis Y cables do not run all nine wires).

Of course, you can wire up your own with two female standard DB9 connectors... These are not an exact, perfect fit (they are a bit more shallow than those connectors used by the game makers in the old days), but they work, in my opinion.
