TEMPEST no TB compatible?

After years of waiting,

I have a 5200 Trackball, wonderful to play Missile Command or Centipede,

 

I tried Tempest and it didnt work at all,

I thought it was compatible

Doesn't the 5200 trackball just emulate an analog joystick, unless I'm mistaken?

No. I don't remember any settings. There is code for 5200 to detect what controller is being used.

try your trackball with Missile Command just to make sure it's working ok. It's the best test program for the Trackball.

It should work fine with the Trak-Ball. One important thing is to make sure the Trak-Ball controller is plugged in before you power up the 5200.

Tempest has full trak-ball support. Make sure your trak-ball is functional with other games.

Yup, my copy of 5200 Tempest works fine with all three of my trackball controllers. My wife and I play Tempest pretty regularly. Oddly enough, Tempest and Centipede are her favorite arcade games.

Are you playing the actual cart version or the unfinished proto?

I tried again

I plugged the TB,

played Centipede without any problem

then put Tempest

the Tb is responding but it is not "instinctive"

for ex on the menu, if I dont touch the ball, it will keep moving trough all the levels

while playing a game, I have to roll a lot the ball before being able to go on the other side

I dont know if what I write is clear,might be frenglish :-)

and if it is normal or not

as it is I think it is better to play with the joystick than the Trackball

Are you playing tempest from an actual Tempest 5200 cart like from here:

Or are you playing it through a flash cartridge?

Where did you purchase it? The first copies sold at a show had issues with the trak-ball that we fixed and released an updated version. If you have an early edition cart I'm sure Al would exchange it for you.
