New Atari Console that Ataribox?

Yeah, their image links you to their Indiegogo page. I take offense to the fraudulent use of "Pre-Order" when they are crowd funding it. Those site specifically state it is not a store and transactions are not orders. Even if it were on Kickstarter, they'd be held to a higher standard of posting a demonstration of a prototype, complete fiction though it could be.

It's Indiegogo, but Inky's otherwise right. Here's the link I got from clicking on the email header graphic (technically, it's a redirect from the actual URL in the email):

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ataribox-all-in-one-retro-video-game-console-entertainment/coming_soon?utm_source=Subscribers&utm_campaign=aa800c1885-AB_ANNOUNCEMENT_2017_12_08&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_7859bb25ac-aa800c1885-16971249

(So, the same landing page we already were aware of.)

Do you have any info on this to back it up?

I suggest tweeting this to @tacobox now that @ataribox is toast.

Does anyone know anything about how @ataribox got suspended? Was it just a troll squatting on the name, or what?

I see they're using @atariboxproject, which isn't as neat, but at least it's not quite as pants-on-head as @colecovision_

If they were squatting then AtariBox might have gained control of the account. Twitter is a funny animal, the only time I was able to successfully gain control of an account for a brand was when the account was abandoned and had been tweeting at and retweeting porn stars.

I think the use of the phrase "crowd funded" is a misnomer in that it makes the assumption that the burden of funding is entirely on "the crowd".

The burden of funding development pre-sales should not be on the crowd at all in my view, but we must agree that Atari has not chosen to crowd fund this thing out of a sense of philanthropy. They want potential customers to fund the endeavor at their own risk, and as a reward, the best they can hope for is delivery of a working product of some sort with no guaranteed design features, capabilities, performance or quality standards. They presumably also get no retail protections against defective products or failure to deliver as promised. I content that it's only a matter of time before the legal hammer drops on these crowdfunding sites, and regulatory authorities or lawsuits force greater fraud and consumer protections.

It's a bummer that this has turned into another sham. Ataribox = Coleco Chameleon = Ouya.

At least the Ouya actually made it into production. Pre-ordering is the oldest form of crowd funding. Take money now, use it to develop the product, maybe send it to the people who paid for it. There are some recent cases in the pinball world of people paying thousands of dollars pre-ordering machines that never shipped (Magic Girl, Predator). Frankly, I need to get this whole thing out of my system.

Besides the fact that Ataribox is now asking us to "pre-order" a console when they themselves have no idea what it will be, what do we even know about the Indiegogo campaign itself?

When Mike Kennedy went to Indiegogo with no prototype, he at least had the decency to make the campaign "all or nothing" - meaning, if he didn't meet his goal, he got nothing and backers got their money returned. Will Ataribox do the same, or will they keep all the money if/when they don't meet their goal?

My guess is that the the goal amount will be very low as compared to the actual cost and effort involved in getting the device made. if it doesn't meet goal I'd be surprised. In fact if it doesn’t ship, I'll formally apologize and never return to AtariAge ever again.

Why do you think they don't know what it will be? Just because they haven't released the info yet doesn't mean they don't know.

I understand that the lack of information at this point is tough to swallow and it is easy to assume nothing is going on when you can't see anything going on. For those of you that might want to "crowd-fund" I'd ask that you stick it out a few more days.

I, personally, wouldn't state something like promising you won't return to AtariAge ever again if the Ataribox doesn't ship. Too many celebrities and/or politicians threaten actions like that, but few actually follow it up.

Definitely I will be waiting to see exactly what (new) Atari is going to offer. However, it would have to be pretty mind-blowing for people to jump onto the campaign en masse, including myself. IMO, this community has been bitten hard by the flop that was the Ouya and the disaster that was the Retro VGS / Coleco Chameleon. I just don't see (new) Atari succeeding that well, and I am pretty sure Vega$ would agree with me on this if bets were taking place.

Marketing these days seems to "drip drip" information rather than releasing it all at once. I suppose the idea is to keep it in the news and keep people interested.

A lot of people don't seem to understand this, and assume a project is DOA if they don't get all the info they want at once.

You can come back even if it doesn't ship. Really, you're nice, and you can hold a good, respectful, intelligent conversation. Not your fault if a project you volunteered to help with doesn't work out.

I'm cool with leaving should it come to that, but I honestly don't think it will.

Folks, don't be fooled by the upcoming 'Ataribox'. Instead, you should invest your money more wisely in a technically competent and beautiful looking machine by Commodore!

Let me introduce to you the Commodore Plus/4...

home_c116_small.jpg

This wizard of a machine is far better than the Ataribox... it actually exists for a start! It has 4 productivity software programs built-in to the ROM out of the box. And what has the Ataribox got? Nothing.

It also is a fully backwards-compatible machine with Commodore 16 software, meaning that if you like your games colourful yet jerky and blocky then you will be spoiled for choice due to the slew of titles available from the outset. You can also benefit from the revolutionary MOS Technologies 6551 UART chip which will enable hi-speed internet access at 19,200 bit/s! Your internet service provider will struggle to keep up!

In addition, this little minx sports better aesthetic qualities than the proposed Ataribox. You like the aerated ridges of Atari's new concept? Well, we have those in spades with the Commodore Plus/4! It also models some truly gorgeous angular lines that will be the envy of all your friends. Trust me when I say this: when your friends walk in to your living room in a few years time, and see this beauty sitting beneath your TV, it will be a real conversation piece. Who couldn't resist the chiclet-styled keyboard and forward-thinking cursor keys?

So, don't wait until 14th December to crowdfund a concept wrapped in a render that will evaporate into the aether... order a Commodore Plus/4 from us today! We have limited stock left of thousands in a warehouse in the Phillipines and we can't guarantee availability leading up to Christmas!

"These deals will be extremely limited. We'll tell you everything you need to know to get the best deal soon."

I totally read that as "These details will be extremely limited. We'll tell you everything you need to know to get the best deal soon."

Yeah, I got the email this morning. Figured there had to be an update, since the emails telling me there has been a new post flooded my email this morning :P Had to dig through the ones from AtariAge to find the one that was from Atari.

Will you personally provide refunds if what is promised is not what is delivered? I mean I have no doubt that they will deliver something if they actually take people's money, but there is a vast difference between delivering the promised product and some useless piece of technology robed in a 2600-esque shell.
