New Atari Console that Ataribox?

Mike Kennedy really wanted RVGS to happen. He just needed enough time and money.

Kennedy and Coleco really wanted Chameleon to happen. They just needed enough time and money.

There were some arguing that Chameleon's use of the SNES Jr (or whatever it was) was just the same as other companies such as Microsoft had done before.

Most skeptics here knew the Tempest 4000 video wasn't run on AVCS hardware, but that doesn't free them of guilt. There's no denying that video was heavily misleading.

I'm of the mindset there's very little difference between the Kennedy campaigns and Atari VCS'. It's amazing how much Atari is getting away with just because of the name brand. They should have been a laughing stock after GDC--or at the very least, be given an extra-skeptical eye from fans and gaming press alike. If you support AVCS, you are tacitly saying that Kennedy's campaigns were okay too. He just needed a successful campaign and enough time to make it happen.

Yeah social media comments are starting to snowball against them.

Also you have to wonder just how much they are throwing away on advertising this campaign. Every time I log into FB I get 2 or 3 of their sponsored messages showing up. Same when I go to youtube and virtually every page that has google adwords. They have to be dropped tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of dollars in advertising (adwords isn't cheap). Couple that with the large amount of "Anonymous" backers and it's almost like they are trying to boost the IGG in the attempt to show some larger company that they should buy/invest in them.

That's a pretty harsh allegation. I wouldn't go there, especially without any way to prove it.

The people running the campaign have to pay Indiegogo a percentage of the take so it would be an expensive way to shill themselves (though maybe they could make up for it with elevated shipping charges?). The whole point of crowdfunding is to use other people's money.

Seems more likely that they're real pigeons who just want to preserve their privacy? I know I sure wouldn't be broadcasting it if I splashed out for this thing.

I'm just raising a possibility that I haven't seen elsewhere. At this point everybody knows they have absolutely nothing, especially in the wake of being exposed for faking the Tempest 4k footage. Plus given their track record, it's not outside the realm of possibility.

Between IGG and the CC processing they have to give up 8% of whatever they raise.

I'm fairly unfamiliar with how advertising on YouTube works in terms of the cost to an advertiser, but something that I've found interesting related to this: I have yet to see one AtariVCSbox ad on YouTube.

Granted, I am running Adblock on my main machine - but probably somewhere in the region of 98% of my YouTube viewing is done on two Samsung TVs with the native YouTube app installed. The channels that I'm subscribed to should be perfect demographic bait for AtariVCSbox ads to crop up, but they never do.

What I'm wondering is if Atari SA bought an advertising package (or packages) that only cover, say, desktop and mobile but not STBs, smart TVs, etc. Is that something that's even possible to purchase? I know that it's possible to target a specific region or language preference on top of certain demographic inferences, but I'm not sure if streaming platform can also be a criterion.

They actually do much more than marketing, and could be handling the whole Indiegogo campaign. I'm curious how much more that takes off the top, along with the 8% you mentioned. There were some very negative posts (or link to negative stories) much earlier in the thread about some of their projects they handled.

Edit:

You know with Indiegogo, I've wondered what if Atari SA needed more cash because of say, "alien tacos destroyed their chips" and wanted $100 extra from each person that already paid for the invisible box. Can Atari SA do something like that? Because if they can, buyers would be pretty pissed.

I THINK Rain Factory is doing the advertising campaign. If so, then I would assume they get a cut of the profits along with Indiegogo.

As far as advertising goes on the internet, it's not that much. A game that sells 60k games maybe has spent $20k-$25 in advertising (let's say $20 per game times 60,000 games. That's like 1.2 mil in gross, subtract out 30% for steam and 20% for the publisher and you get a net of $600k. The publisher would pay the advertising money). So looking at hardware I'd say Atari is probably giving Rain Factory a cut and indigogo a cut and then a cut to the hardware manufacterers. The advertising is not that much unless they go on television.

Just an educated guess so feel free to trash me if I'm wrong.

Based on the amount of web advertising they are doing then it must be a significant cut. 7% to Rain Factory would mean 15% of the fund would be going out to IGG/CC/RF. So if it tops out at 3 million that's 450k out the door right off the bat. And that's before taxes as well....

I get Atari VCS ads on the right side of my screen all of the time. Advertising is a long story with many different things.

- So I have a game I wrote. We'll use the Android version here. It pings the server who pick an ad and displays it on the game. To make 1 penny I need about 10,000 views. Now it does get bid out so advertisers say how much and google figures the rest out.

- I have a web site that used to have ads. Now I didn't get crap unless someone clicked on the ad. That got me 2-5 pennies. However, the poker sites would pay the most sometimes up to 10 cents a click though.

- I have another game with Unity ads. Now they put ads in the game. You don't get anything unless someone watches the ad, clicks on the ad and then installs the game. WTF? Also, they keep showing the same ads over and over. So if a person already has the game he won't reinstall it.

What you are talking about is the other side. that is where you make a campaign. You set up an account, create the ads, tell google (YouTube) what categories you want then in and it does the rest. The money is set up from the google wallet.

The best is Amazon just paying for a download with no ads. You get the $3 or so fo the sale (minus their 30% cut) and Amazon will pay you monthly. Google, Unity and most of the others will never pay you until it's $100 or more. Needless to say I have a number of accounts with money I can not get to. Oh yeah, and Google decides if the clicks are valid or not. They change the number down and will not tell you why. they do the same with youtube views.

You voted for those in office in The white house, senate and house to rule us in the USA so you have to live by their laws. So no complaining.

BTW; If it is Rain Factory doing the VCS campaign then that is amazing. They have a long list of campaigns that they hit gold with. They are a class A company.

Now, if they could just stop spamming my e-mail account with ads about hats, railroad tycoon, Atari VCSii and gay porn sites. Geez.

Oh I agree, they are kicking ass with getting the word out about the system and campaign.
