Who says it's running cool/has good airflow? It can be hot and still run - it's just that thermal throttling is more likely.

Plus there are other PCBs out there that funnel air like the VCS board and laptops, and you can get cases and such that do that too. I think the cooling is a non-issue for a potential fake.

Ehh....... maybe...? I dunno...

Even with all the illogical/unethical decisions Atari's made over 2 years, I think it's a tad extreme to think Atari would prep a "fake functional" motherboard just to trick us. Also, that heatsink in the actual motherboard they showed off would have to fit on the so-called "generic x86 board" that they supposedly stuffed into the shell. Not to mention, prepping other things like the USB ports and the front LED, etc. It just seems like a lot of trouble just to fake people out, you know? But who knows... Not saying it's impossible though.

I have PowerA WiiU and Wii controllers. I like them and work no problems. Can't comment on the Switch stuff.

So @PlaysWithWolves did you get to see the first prototype? Box and all?

I have a wired Power A controller for the Switch- it was el cheapo stuff that lasted me a month of gameplay before one of the analog sticks gave out.

It took me a while to process this.  That's seriously fucked up.  Putting aside the fact that this is cartoonishly evil, it also risks creating a massive PR disaster for the company.  Imagine when somebody does another documentary like this and finds Atari logos on the machines that kids are playing!?  I'd generally considered Atari SA to be much more inept than evil, but this is a new low.

The scenes of kids playing slot machines bothered me and that was reflected in my post.  The machines are illegal according to the video.  The article says that gambling on smart phones is where the action is now.

Shout-out to @Flojomojo for being a good sport when I implied Flo would have too much integrity to show up at a private Atari schmoozefest.

Or higher price.  I'm not sure

Everyone has a price. Flattery seems to be enough for some, even if common sense should be screaming "run away, don't make eye contact."

A cheap laptop board in a fugly 1970s-ish case running Atari Vault isn't enough to waggle my joystick, turn my paddles, or flip my RESET switch.

But it has a FUJI logo on it. How dare you not be a sycophantic Atarian that accepts everything they chuck at you without question. REAL fans know what to do.

What if it's pre-loaded with Combat?

I want to take some of those 10 or so doods who keep posting about Lynx and Jaguar games to school and remind them that just because something had an Atari label on it when they were children, doesn't mean it's coming back. I liked the SEGA Star Trek game when I was small, SEGA's Frogger for that matter. I didn't know it was Konami until somewhat recently. Atari never owned most of the games we loved to play, they just licensed them out and those days are long gone. We should make a thread where someone names an old game they like, and we can all talk about practical ways to play it, or suggest a worthy replacement.

Guns, tanks and war planes? That's awfully violent! Family friendly all the way, please. Besides, there's already World of Tanks, which is just a little bit better.

For anyone thinking like that, they must not understand the basics behind game development and publishing. That's what sets up a lot of expectations to be thoroughly crushed. In most cases, a publisher doesn't own the rights to the game itself, that lies with the developer.

We could probably list everything that Atari designed in-house for the Lynx and Jaguar right here without it getting too long. Of course, this does not mean that Atari SA still owns these IP, as we saw with the 2019 IP holdings list a few pages back:

Correct me on any of these if I'm wrong :P Again, this is designed at Atari back in the day, doesn't mean they haven't sold it off since, like BattleZone

Lynx:

Basketbrawl

BattleZone 2000

Dirty Larry: Renegade Cop

Kung Food

Lynx Casino (hey, foreshadowing the "opportunity" Atari SA sees in Kenya!)

Pinball Jam? (not sure, but it looks like it was)

Robo-Squash

Super Asteroids & Missile Command

Warbirds

World Class Fussball/Soccer

Jaguar:

Club Drive

Hover Strike

Fight For Life

Missile Command 3D

Tempest 2000

Trevor McFur in the Crescent Galaxy

Looking at the Atari SA IP list though, they only own the rights for two of the games on each list: Basketbrawl & Super Asteroids on the Lynx; MC3D and T2K on the Jaguar. Well, * on the Jaguar...for some weird reason, they maintain owning the very unfinished and unreleased Space War 2000.

All-in-all, there really isn't much to be excited about from what they could remake or offer on their eShop from their own catalog at this point.

Well, it boots up Windows-- so technically you'd be right. o u o

Nothing technically about it. He's bang on.

Yeah, yeah, I know. The PS4 and Xbox One are technically PCs because they use PC tech. But the VCS is just an off-the-shelf PC in a fancy new form factor.

It's actually incredible how many so-called retro gamers still can't make a difference between a developer and a publisher... -_-

More I read, more I think it's a pc in Atari VCS shell.

But again, I might be wrong.

As the only supposed functionality we have seen so far on the VCS II was it booting Windows 10 and then loading up Fortnite through Steam; and in view it is supposed to be released in just a few months, I think it is a safe bet to say this unit is going to be essentially a PC and not the advertised console with additional PC capabilities.

.. that is, if the VCS II actually makes it to production. Which is something I still question as by their own metrics they are still in the 'prototype' stage of development.

I also believe there are still no signs of a functional custom OS, or for that matter any hint of developer interest or console-specific games. Those are some rather large issues.

It certainly does not look very promising for backers currently, in my opinion.

I've been following that thread in horror.  The mods there do understand how to correctly remove someone from a group by the way, but I digress.  Anyway, that thread is a real dumpster fire.  Ryan Edwards isn't wrong.  Atari said users would be able to purchase Jaguar roms  for the system.   Well, if Atari can't legally sell those roms, than that's an issue.  Jaguar emulation is pretty sketchy right now, so the magical cure all know as "Sandbox Mode" is irrelevant.   He's correct that Atari has again misled consumers, but the usual suspects come in to defend Atari's honor.

Of course it doesn't.

It hasn't looked promising since June 2017, when a tiny IP holding company with no hardware experience announced its intention to enter the ultra-competitive console market.

The example you gave with the gaming laptop is exactly how I was picturing the console working. But yeah, like you said, their communication with us is awful, and that's really what's causing all this skepticism.

Frankly, Atari may be showing a legitimate console here, but they have literally no idea what they're doing and they're just pissing everyone off by not answering our concerns, lashing out at those that challenge them by either removing their comments, blocking them or making stupid comments about YouTuber's and credible journalists.

Well if they would show the console to the YouTubers and make them sign a NDA they couldn't say anything bad about it because they would be under the NDA. Can't say some part of it was crap without saying why and thus breaking it. They could have been smarter about how they went with a lot of things.
