Now Walmart.com has pushed back their date to November 27.

image.thumb.png.06d979ac19fb536239ce55de399a32f4.png

With a December 1 arrival date, which is almost certainly a placeholder.

Gamestop changed their date to TBD, and is no longer taking pre-orders. It just says "NOT AVAILABLE."

https://www.gamestop.com/video-games/arcade/products/atari-vcs-800-onyx-all-in-system-bundle/11094776.htm

The market was tough before. Now that stores are closed and people are losing income, it seems like a worse idea than ever. Or as Atari's copy writer would say, "like never before."

It's sad to live in a world where we can't mix with our friends and the only progress pictures of "Atari vcs" are factory mistakes.

Luckily Atari has so many cultists to keep the faith alive. They could easily string this out for many more years at this point.

I find it interesting though that they clearly really have nothing to talk about. There is nothing more scratching the bottom of the barrel than showing defects on preproduction units. The so called updates have been silly or stupid before but this is a new low in "we have nothing."

Though I wonder what excuse Atari would be using if they couldn't use the current health crisis as the fall back right now?

"We completed our prototype phase, and had moved the console to full production, however upon moving to full production there were several quality issues that arose from the full scale manufacturing that we ultimately deemed unacceptable to the high standards we have set, therefore we are holding these back until we can produce units that satisfy both yours and our expected level of excellence."  And then pretty much post the same medium update that they posted, showing all of the issues.

Okay, I don't work in fabrication, but tell me where I'm wrong here:

"The USB ports are offset from the case" = We can't get an off-the-shelf board with known dimensions to line up... but we're totally done you guise!

"Unacceptable heat dissipation" = We still have no idea how to do thermals.  So everything we thought was done... isn't.

"Scratches on the plastic" = the Chinese plant gives Even  less of a fsck than we do.

Those example pictures showing errors, defects, scratches, etc. are typically how it's done for things that are subjective. You don't want every Operator in a QC role making their own judgment, so you give them something as an example to gauge against. These can be go/no-go photos, or a grading scale ("Allowed are 1 scratch of A severity, or 2 scratches of B severity with a minimum spacing of Xmm, or 3 or more scratches of C severity with minimum spacing of Ymm"), that kind of thing. It's such a given thing that I can't believe they thought it was worthy of even mentioning.

Where they are stating an actual dimension (like the spacing around the USB connector and the housing), they'll likely give some sort of simple gauge on either the high side or both sides of the tolerance (if this fits it's OK, as long as that doesn't fit).

All in all, those kind of issues where the Ethernet port doesn't fit shouldn't be happening, not on any kind of 6 sigma design anyway. It looks to me that they didn't even do an RSS tolerance analysis to make sure all of the mechanical tolerances on the individual parts don't add up to something that you can't assemble.

This thing is a dumpster fire on every level, including Design For Manufacturability.

I've set up a factory in China, and was impressed by how diligent the workers are. They want to do inspections, and they want to find defects. The issue is giving them a gauge so that their work can be done within takt time and be as deterministic as possible. If you tell them their job is "look for defects", they will spend all day doing it. In my experience, they took instructions quite literally, so there was more work than expected on our side to make sure that all of our process and quality documentation would be properly interpreted.

P.S. I really don't know how a thin glued-down wood strip, with a bad aspect ratio, is supposed to work once it experiences a change in humidity...

Is it possible that Martial Daviaud/marss0/marss/marrs marrs et cetera is actually Atari's unpaid social media intern?

The guy pops up on every single outlet, regurgitating or cheerleading every single meaningless media release.

Yes, it was truly embarrassing. Even I, with no background in manufacturing could see that from the very first design pitch.

Remember this?

Their big announcement was going from some designer's cute but completely impractical drawing

With hardware, there's no benefit and a lot of risk to jumping in early, especially with an unproven, inexperienced team taking money up front.

Officially delayed:

Launch Delay

The countdown to the Ataribox launch on Indiegogo has been officially paused. Because of one key element on our checklist, it is taking more time to create the platform and ecosystem the Atari community deserves. Building Ataribox is incredibly important to us and we will do whatever it takes to be sure it is worth the wait.

An updated launch plan is underway and more detailed information will be available soon.

We will be keeping you, our community, informed every step of the way. Thank you again for your support of Ataribox.

-The Ataribox Team

They are an unusual case. It's like they either work for Atari out they are related to someone who works for Atari or they put their life's savings into Atari Stock. And in thier opinion everything Atari does is some how directly connected to the VCS.

Hotelier licenses Atari branding, means a VCS on every room. Crypto currency licenses Atari branding, Atari coin on the VCS. Crypto based game allowing Atari to showcase their content in their game, some how VCS related.

And can I just say that the whole "No Local Restricion (sic). Due to the borderless nature of cryptocurrencies, anyone can gamble anywhere." for Atari Casino is going get their asses handed to them in the US where I still cannot play online poker in every state. 'Cause let's be real honest... not much different between a fake Poker chip worth $5 and an Atari token worth $5.

It's to the point where there was only one comment on the latest Medium post, and I basically knew before even clicking who it was going to be.

Excellent. ;)

My goodness. They're all like talking toys with pull strings, each with their own mindless catch phrase. There's a snake in my boot. Simple as that. For moms and Netflix. Tests off the chart with focus groups. Nailed it. To infinity and behind. First post. Like never before. A little less conversation please. Preorders start soon. A one-two punch. Stay tuned. The victory will be even sweeter. Cornering then market on retro games. As yourself why that is. Yes I Canada. Remember when. Play again.

I still think the most "pants on fire" moment was when The Register leaked the 30 minute audio clip of when Atari had nothing...and still has nothing.   https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/06/21/atari_interview_in_full/

Wow - I'd never heard that.  How anyone could've heard that interview and come away still believing Atari had the competence to produce anything is beyond me.
