The only way for some to understand this new "Atari" is through a visual aid.

Is the current day "atari" even infogrames anymore? I recall playing a couple of good games by that brand name a while ago, but now i believe those franchises are dead.

Listening to the people who are standing by this project, I'm desperately looking for some rationale beyond "Atari Logo" and "Cool Case" and I'm just not seeing it.

Yeah, Infogrames closed down their last games studio - Eden Games - in 2013 as part of the bankruptcy, so the armadillo is long gone.

All that's left now is the empty shell with Atari's name on it.

My family got a 7800.  I think it was Christmas of 88'.  The only game I remember having for it was Pole Position II.  One of my older brother's friends brought over his NES and "The Legend of Zelda" one day, and my younger brother and I immediately started pining for that system.  We got an NES for Christmas the following year and the 7800 was quickly forgotten.

Castlevania was the game that did it for me and my brother.   Man, what an epic game at the time, but alas, Konami has also fallen.

Maybe when Atari opens their casinos, we can use Atari tokens to play Castlevania pachinko machines?  I can only dream.

Atari sure did pick the right time to invest in Hotels. Clearly they are going to blame this on the global health crisis. No one is going on Vacation they are all staying home playing videogames... OH yea, we also blame the Atari VCS failure on people staying home playing awesome videogames that are on systems that people can buy in stores righ now!.
Darn YOU! non-procrastinating devs! how dare you make games for systems that will make you money! Come to Atari! we pay you when we can DANG NAMIT!!! ?

This will be for Gen-Xers born from 1965-1977 as the main target...”younger” Gen-Xers & Boomers...won’t have the same emotional attachment or probably won’t/don’t even care so much about ATARI. They were either Pinball Wizards...didn’t care about the arcade video game explosion or just didn’t experience the arcade & home console phenomenon that was headed by ATARI.

I'm in this demographic, as are many others on this forum. We have enough emotional attachment to the original legacy of Atari that we visit an Atari forum, so by your logic we should be the target audience and even we don't want it.

If you're feeling nostalgic and want to play the old games there is so many options already. The new Atari VCS will include Atari Vault which I got on Steam on sale for about $2. There is also the Atari Flashback collections on consoles. They should have just released a official  CX-40 joystick that can connect to existing consoles and bundled it with Atari Vault, even though I have original Atari consoles I would have bought that.

I spend a lot of money on my hobbies, including retro gaming but $300-$400 is beyond what I would spend on an impulse buy. If this is aimed at Gen-Xers many of us have other responsibilities that come first like kids, mortgages, car repairs, etc.

Yeah...it’s all in perspective...I have home stereo components bought in the early 1990s that are double this amount of money...my CD player is one of the best ever made...dbx DX-5...cassette deck...Yamaha KX-1200...my USA made(USA speakers were the best) JBL speakers...it was ALWAYS said...spend the MOST on your speakers.

My ATARI Jaguar was $249 in early 1994...so yeah...2020...$300-$400 is huge money. And I bought my ATARI Jaguar-CD in (late 1995?) early 1996...for $99(I “might” have paid $149...should go look at the box)...so...$348($398) for my ATARI Jaguar+CD in the mid-1990s...wow. And the games were $50-$70 each...amazing that I started my IRA in 1995 and converted it to a Roth IRA...tax free compounding interest...whodathunkit.

You do know that this is a licensing deal...it is just money for ATARI without any risk. ATARI already received an initial upfront payment and will get a percentage of revenues generated by the ATARI branded hotels. “If” those hotels never happen...ATARI is out ZERO dollars.

Who in the blue hell would want an Atari themed hotel in the first place?  And don't say Vegas, the "theme" Hotel is a dead concept in Vegas

So you couldn't spot a DOA system twenty-four years ago, either.

It's all speculation, but we can make educated guesses based on the numbers publicly known. Back in April, Amico quickly passed 10,000 pre-orders: https://gamedaily.biz/article/1680/intellivision-amico-receives-10000-preorders-only-needs-180000-sold-to-hit-break-even-point

The 180,000 tipping point (and the 30,000 - 50,000 "being fine" point) referenced in the article is an example of how Amico is running a lean operation and knowing the limitations of their market.

(By the way, the Amico is also available for pre-order at Gamestop, so it's the same as the VCS in that regard: https://www.gamestop.com/search/?q=amico&lang=default)

All we know on the VCS side is that they have around 10,000 Indiegogo console backers (figuring roughly 1,500 put in for non-system stuff). With the VCS being available at both Walmart and GameStop, I added in a few thousand more pre-orders at best (being VERY generous) knowing how pre-orders work at these retailers and factoring in the general reaction that is just a Google search away, as well as seen in how Atari's PR is basically in damage control mode. Again, there's no real buzz to drive pre-order adoption here. In fact, there's negative buzz at this point, again, due to a combination of factors, including the consistent delays.

Why do you think there’s a “buzz” around TT’s system? It seems to me...everyone who had Mattel’s “1” console in the 1980s is making YouTube videos about it...like around 10-20 diehards and then a few thousand(being very generous) following its progress. TT wants to advertise it in AARP & Good Housekeeping...yeah...maybe there will be “buzz” after those campaigns start.

Also...there IS a connection with Mattel’s HyperScan...it’s called RFID cards.

I LOVE my ATARI Jaguar...then & now. You obviously didn’t get to play...at release...Alien vs. Predator...Tempest 2000...Defender 2000...DOOM(first console with DOOM)...Iron Soldier...Iron Soldier II...Hover Strike...Battlemorph...Missile Command 3D...Breakout 2000...etc...sad.

Also...why the ATARI hate? When did ATARI hurt you so bad?

And I liked/like Cybermorph...finished it...the later stage Bosses were very cool at the time & Fight For Life...finished it as well...cool storyline...cool Bosses...cool moves...sue me.

Nope.

Kind of strange to me...guess Mattel has a lot of blank RFID cards taking up space in some warehouse. Win/Win for everyone...I guess?

So every device with an RFID reader is a hyperscan or what?

Its so hard to understand that Mattel has absolutely no relation with the Amico?

I did play it at release. I didn't buy until three years later, when I picked up three consoles at KayBee Toys for $25 each. As I mentioned, I have a complete boxed retail collection virtually all of which I paid pennies on the dollar for, before prices got stupid recently. If you play Rebooteroids or most of the other Reboot titles, check the credits for racerx... I've done tons of testing work.

The point that you're absolutely missing is that everyone circa 1995 knew the Jaguar was going to flop, hard. Everyone that paid any attention knew Atari was circling the drain and didn't have the money or resources to properly launch a console or attract major developers. That doesn't mean we hated Atari (which at that time, was at least the tattered remnants of the real Atari). It just meant people weren't fools. No way in hell was I going to pay full retail for that...it was obviously destined for clearance bins.

Sound familiar?

Ummmm...the people who are paying ATARI to use their name...for their ATARI branded hotels. These hotels are going to have big Game Centers & space for video gaming tournaments...I also think these property developers “think” that families “might” want to stay at a hotel with entertainment included...”maybe” in case of detrimental weather or fun when NOT doing what they are in the area for...BUT...also “maybe” for the “novelty”...as well...”maybe”.
