New Atari Console that Ataribox?

Recommended Posts

What's to bet the highly classified GUI AtariSA is working on is nothing but software running on windows 10... They're so full of their own $hit they go to the toilet head first

@Lodmot, as one who has seen a working unit and the transparent-case pictures, I can safely say the AtariVCS' cooler is on the top of the board.  It's supported by a fan blower vent.

If there's one thing we know Atari is great at, it's blowing hot air.

To what end? To get "Atari" banned from getting a booth at a conference they never intended to leverage anyway, because they've got nothing to show? I guess it would be amusing to have Fred on the "no tickets allowed" list, even if

Just add "outboarding" to the list of their questionable behavior

trademark trolling

crowdfunding abuse

lying to media

social media incompetence

not paying their partners

financial exploitation via online casinos

not knowing pong is not a high score game

taking away SDcard from Flashback

censorship of criticism

abandoning paid apps

blockchain shenanigans

probably more...

I'd like to summarize that as Chesnais and company with their heads up their derrieres.

But they have a passageway that leads hot air out the rear, see?:

(I know, I'm setting myself up xD)

I guess I don't understand your point since hot air can be piped or blown just about any direction.  Besides, Atari would never mislead in the first place.

Also, what does "moot" mean?  Is that some fancy French word for "awesome"?

No problem. o u o

So basically, the fan on the processor isn't blowing air upwards, the air is being forced out the side into that black passageway, which guides it out the back of the console. It's an air duct... o w o

But my point earlier was, it appears to be a specialized heatsink built specifically for the VCS. If you cram another x86 board inside the VCS shell to try and "fake" footage or something, you need to have a heatsink setup on that motherboard that accommodates the smaller VCS casing.

Hope that clears it up a bit more..

Because Sony's stubborn, and they still think they can rule the video game market like it's 2000, when the PS2 was like the biggest thing ever. xD

I could be mistaken, but I'm making the assumption it's blown out like a gaming laptop:

But, we'd need to see longer, uncut, footage to know if there were any heat issues.  They may have brought v1 of the board.  I doubt v2.  And as @JBerel points out, their use of weasel words brings into doubt if they even brought a working prototype board at all.  Atari not answering @Paul Slocums simple request for clarity after three days seems to fortify the position.

Well, safe to say that my high from my Atari Interactive HQ trip is gone.  If any footbath companies would like a review, a ride in a mid-80s Countach would be great.  Or a Bugatti Veyron.  Of course, in no way would any indulgences affect my report.

The example you gave with the gaming laptop is exactly how I was picturing the console working. But yeah, like you said, their communication with us is awful, and that's really what's causing all this skepticism.

Frankly, Atari may be showing a legitimate console here, but they have literally no idea what they're doing and they're just pissing everyone off by not answering our concerns, lashing out at those that challenge them by either removing their comments, blocking them or making stupid comments about YouTuber's and credible journalists.

What do you mean? Fred's been trotting around the world with that mockup console for the media for months now. He's shown it to Stuart Varney and Steve Wozniak and we've seen the video with our own eyes. That version is rugged, requires no electricity, doesn't get hot, and makes no fan noise. Sounds pretty good to me. NAILED IT

Wasn't 4k advertised originally?

Yes, they kept saying it could do 4k at 60fps. AMD says this in their own advertising to be fair, but regardless it's only for video playback and streaming, not for games. Atari only recently started being more specific about this, saying it's for streaming - they misled people for a while.

Plus, outside of YouTube and such, 60fps video isn't common, so that can be especially confusing to those who don't know any better.

I'm almost 100% certain Atari was outboarding (by the way, we had easy access to an email address at the CES website for reporting that stuff..... Anyone here utilize it?)

I did too, though I also got no reply. Made sure to supply evidence.

My thought process was basically: "fuck 'em".

To be fair to Atari though, they aren't the only company coming out with a game console with literally zero exclusive games. Look at the Xbox Series X. I have a feeling Microsoft is going to fuck themselves over royally with that one.

Microsoft will be fine. They may be third place but they're still moving plenty of units and the Xbox One X is currently the most powerful console on the market. I'd buy one if I had the cash to spare just because it's well-made hardware.

Microsoft is positioning Xbox as more of a service, anyway. Every new Xbox game now comes to PC too, and they continue to have the best backwards compatibility currently available, not to mention their upcoming streaming service.

I don't like Microsoft but they've positioned themselves well for the long-term. Sony, on the other hand, only has their first-party studios to fall back on, and that won't keep them afloat forever.

On a personal level, I loathe exclusives but I'm keen to buy good games from Microsoft on PC. Seems like a win-win to me.

I thought the CTA and CES mentioned fines but that's probably not correct. Regardless, I see it as karma for screwing with their customers.

Plus, I'm sick of this charade from Atari.

I'm not contorting it into "they have working hardware". I'm trying to say it's a possibility that they have working hardware, and it would be highly impractical for them to "fake a console" by building an "alternate working" console. It doesn't make sense to me. Plus, what about my other point about keeping the system cool, because that WOULD be a necessity. If you're going to schlup another x86 board in that VCS casing (even a small Arduino x86 board), your heat sink is pointing upward, while the vents in the VCS casing are on the rear:

Image result for arduino x86

Who says it's running cool/has good airflow? It can be hot and still run - it's just that thermal throttling is more likely.

Plus there are other PCBs out there that funnel air like the VCS board and laptops, and you can get cases and such that do that too. I think the cooling is a non-issue for a potential fake.

In my continued series of "Poor Karl" ... Karl has a dream. Will it be realized, or will life with the Atari VCS continue to be a monthly disappointment? Please tune in June 11th to find out!

If the system is out by then, who cares if Atari is at E3?  Is Karl saying he doesn't think backers will have their systems by June?  If not...yikes.

That's from six months ago, so clearly they hadn't yet read Atari's report from Jan. 8th:

If they haven't heard about Atari coming to Africa, they soon will.  I mean, it's Atari!

Atari is being smart here.  Kenya is going through the gambling equivalent of our arcade era.  What more appropriate company to exploit a country with a gambling addiction crisis and the 76% of Kenyan millennials who've gambled?  Atari, that's what.

So if you watch this HBO video and see kids playing arcade-style slot machines, just think how you used to play Arcade games and say, "Remember when?"

It took me a while to process this.  That's seriously fucked up.  Putting aside the fact that this is cartoonishly evil, it also risks creating a massive PR disaster for the company.  Imagine when somebody does another documentary like this and finds Atari logos on the machines that kids are playing!?  I'd generally considered Atari SA to be much more inept than evil, but this is a new low.
