New Atari Console that Ataribox?

Recommended Posts

Based on the pictures alone, I'm expecting to slide it open and find a bunch of colored pencils. The added value would be a sharpener. We'll find out in two weeks what colors are available.

Is "Failure Orange" a color? Because I couldn't find it on Crayola's website.

Anybody remember the jumbo Crayola 64-packs with the built in sharpener with plastic razor blade? It literally dumped the crayon shavings into a sealed compartment behind the crayon storage bay. Instant confetti if your child destroys the box. I also once stuck a wooden #2 pencil in there and when I twisted it, the plastic crayon sharpener broke...

I'd love to see a videogame about sharpening pencils and crayons.

Yes. Yes I do. I remember I had to guard mine closely. Kids would try to swap and steal from my box, till I beat one, then it stopped.

While my initial excitement level was through the roof when I saw the Atari video, it's loosing steam fast. I understand the strategy in building a level of enthusiasm, but this is ridiculous. Announce a product, ask for money, wait a couple weeks, show 2 boxes, tell everyone to wait a couple of weeks to see what's inside.

Seriously?!? They're not even real boxes. That's a mock up in photoshop of what a box looks like. They didn't even bother to adjust the background between the two, just used a woodgrain layer and an orange layer of the same image.

This is how video games are marketed in 2017 though. They drip drip drip tidbits of information, and it builds excitement and keeps (most) people enthusiastic. It works or they wouldn't do it.

Hell, if Atari hadn't taken this approach, it probably wouldn't have gotten the kind of coverage it did.

I still think Ataribox is a dumb name. They should have a naming contest on their website. That'd draw A LOT of views. The winner would get the 1st one off the assembly line.

I'll go with 'Atari Lightwave or 'Atari Photon'. What is your name???????

The Atari Troposphere

I hope this one doesn't go over people's heads.

Personally, all I want is a modern Atari Hardware with a good performance/price ratio, if this thing is similar to a Xbox One for around 200$/€ (that HW is incredibly low cheap at this point) and can run PC games or get games like OverWatch they will have my money, if they don't charge for Online it can be a good living room small pc/console substitute.

That would be a neat use of the "HD Rumble" on the Nintendo Switch. It's so satisfying to grind away a new pencil with a bolted-down crank sharpener.

Maybe it's this:

Just kidding. I don't think it's that either.

I remember that IGG. It's astounding to me that they hit 2855% of their target. WTF is wrong with people? Especially since it's not at all clear whether this ...

looks like a Sega

Did Sega complain about the original design? The new one looks terrible.

Ataribox is just the working title--its not going to be the official name.

Maybe it has a different name. Much like the switch was referred as the NX?

Does anyone expect that the Atari Box is a mini PC based gaming box that hooks directly to your TV, similar to the PlayStation TV or Amazon Fire TV? I know this has been discussed before, but at this point what else could it be?

I have a fascination for this type of media box. I've bought them all, I even backed things like Ouya (own both versions), Google Nexus Player, Fire TV, PSTV, Game Stick, and others. I even backed the Retro Engine Sigma console that was mentioned earlier in this topic. (Yes, I know it's just a Pi box, and yes, I do believe the developers were scamming people.) I personally feel that the mini TV / multimedia game box is a viable concept, at least on paper, that no one has actually done right. That's why I keep buying these boxes, to learn from their mistakes.

So what are the chances of this being a mini gaming box? And if that's the case, how well is this thing going to sell? I have no doubt that it will make its Kickstarter goals, probably due mostly to nostalgia and compulsive backers like me (I'll back anything), but how will it do on the open market?

Initial backers got the Sega looking one, buyers now get the modem haha...No idea if they changed it for a reason. I don't think it looks bad...And it's only $80!..

It's not what the engineers wanted to build, but the CEO made them build it. They have an amazing sales force lined up to move this thing.

I'm imaginaing an Nividia Shield TV type product, except instead of an ARM SOC, they will probably use a x86 SOC - like the Z8750 powering the GPD WIN or maybe even the Apollo lake or M3 at the the more expensive end.

There are many x86 Windows TV boxes on the market they could go to the supplier for and leverage off - if they wanted to

We went over that one, for 80US$ you are actually buying this:

http://orangepi.com/orange-pi-lite

I believe with armbian

https://www.armbian.com/orange-pi-lite/

the specs match to a T and the side mounted USBs and all other connectors align just right, so they didn't even design the board for it.

You can get it for around 16US$ shipped from aliexpress or banggood.

Of course you'd need the HDMI cable, AC adapter, dual analog joypad and SD card and the custom case .... not sure it'll be worthy the extra money but hey!!!

Maybe their major contribution is on the SW side .... maybe!!!

Let's just hope the ataribox is not yet another arm sbc box.

Im really hoping for something a little more gaming focused hardware than the typical box with a Intel z8xxx, currently they have a lot of cheap Hardware options to make a mini-pc with a decent performance and be profitable.

Let's see if this box will have something to do with a mysterious service that Atari calls 'Atari Connect' ;-) ...
