New Atari Console that Ataribox?

I know that this is a petty complaint, but I'm annoyed that it's called Atari VCS. It's not the Atari VCS, It's a Linux box that sort of resembles a mutant VCS, assuming that it actually exists and will ever be released.

They should just go with Ataribox.

Yeah, Rainfactory has been caught faking social media feedback and followers as well as being involved in campaigns using blatantly fraudulent demo videos. They've even been popped for faking customer feedback on products that weren't even released yet. I posted the facts and evidence months ago in this thread. They're in great company.

I am fine with the name as the AtariBox name was dumb. Beyond the people on this site I do not know one person who refers to the 2600 as the VCS. It is either "the Atari" or the 2600. Heck, I rarely refer to it as the VCS and when I do I say Video Computer System and not the abbreviation.

It has been too long since the 2600 came out so it should not cause market confusion. Most confusion comes from people being too lazy to read (had this happen to some of my listings on ebay).

That wasn't Rain Factory. They just marketed the product. I think that made like 3.5 mil in the crowdfunding. That's impressive for a little handsized drone. But you know, it doesn't matter what Atari does. 90% of the people on this site hate Atari and everything they do. It's non-stop complaining. It's a wonder why any of you all even bother coming here. They could invent immortality and you all would find reasons to slam them. But if Nintendo did it, oh yeah. You all would be lined up to order.

..but Rain Factory has a history of successful crowdfunding projects.

BackerKit Projection today is down another $100,000 for the final total, and only 88 people backed it today. I don't want to sound egotistical but as the guy who managed to get the word out about the Llamasoft Scandal a few days ago I wonder how many people I caused to cancel their preorder or decide not to order at all.

Everybody is faking customer feedback on products nowadays.

And a lot of Feedback postings on social media sites are even written by professionel persons or companies who get paid for it.

Wake up - Its 2018 :D

Have you been hiding under a stone the last 10 years?

Besides:

Not less Sport matches are arranged nowadays and the winner is determined from the beginning.

The news are manipulating the people, especially CNN.

Statistics are faked on every possible subject you can imagine.

The government lies to you all the time.

In addition to your post:

In Europe (and maybe in the rest of the world outside the US) we dont even know the term "VCS".

Their consoles were always known and referred to as "Atari 2600", "Atari 5200", "Atari Jaguar" etc.

Some input on the viability of Linux ports on this thing:

I exclusively have used Linux for the past 3 years, including for gaming. There are two kinds of Linux ports; native ports and wrappers. Native ports are ideal because they'll run similarly or even better than running the same game on Windows on the same hardware. The other kinds are wrapper ports, which are basically a customized WINE. This makes things very CPU bound. I took this into account when building my PC (getting a better CPU and a shittier graphics cards card when usually people do the opposite) and it's fine but I've played my games on some other computers over the years and there's a minimum sort of CPU level where you just got bottlenecked hard and this low end 2015 APU is well below that. This thing isn't running modern AAA games that exist in wrapper ports. I can't find any but if you look at a benchmark of someone testing a game on Linux with a non-native port (say, Total War) with even a low end graphics card but comparing CPUs, you'll notice that getting a better CPU gives you way more FPS while a better GPU gives you barely any. There's kind of a hill you overcome where the CPU stops mattering as much but that's quite a bit above what this has in it.

EDIT: Wrapper ports of games that run in OpenGL/Vulkan on Windows like Doom would probably perform at like 95% of a native port so games like that it could probably do.

I agree. Lots of negativity on here. Today's scandal is that the marketing company is stretching the truth a bit. This has never happened before. Marketing for everything is always 100% truthful and honest.

People are entitled to their opinion and Atari wants the community involved, so there will be a bit of negativity.

-Atari put out the Tempest 4000 video on Facebook two weeks before the IGG campaign, not the marketing company.

-The video literally says "Atari VCS Modern Game Test Tempest 4000" in black and white. For some reason, many people are blind to this.

-It shows two Atari VCSes on the table in front of the monitor, including cables.

-Not a PC or laptop to be seen anywhere.

-No messages that it's a PC on the video itself, anywhere.

But sure, it's stretching it "a bit"; kind of like ebaying a picture of an item as-if it was the actual item was stretching the truth "a bit".

It was most likely running on a dev board running Windows.

BTW; If it is Rain Factory doing the VCS campaign then that is amazing. They have a long list of campaigns that they hit gold with. They are a class A company.

https://www.rainfactory.com/work/

Now, if they could just stop spamming my e-mail account with ads about hats, railroad tycoon, Atari VCSii and gay porn sites. Geez.

Successful crowdfunding campaigns for one-off products that never came into the mainstream after the campaign sounds exactly like "Atari VCS." Has anyone heard of any of these things outside of IGG? Except for the drone helicopter thing, which was full of scandals and false claims, of course.

Kickstarter has successful campaigns that don't turn into successful products. Pebble and Ouya are the biggest examples I can remember. They were OK products but never hit big enough to sustain themselves.

That was the point ... Rainfactory handled the marketing, which was a big part of the scandal. Looks like they split up, so it's funny that RF is still taking credit for the work. http://onagolies.com/report-thatdroneshow-and-rainfactory-part-ways-with-onagofly/

You're wrong about Atari. We don't hate them because of their name, we hate them because of the stupid shit they do. Suing Jeff Minter. Selling Speaker Hats. If you're not at least annoyed with them, you're not paying attention.

It could have been a Playstation 4, too. We just don't know what it was, because they weren't forthcoming with the facts. They implied it was running on AtariBox, which we know is false.

Is that really even a dev board? I was under the impression even the APU was consumer. Googling found me a laptop on Newegg with the exact APU model. If I buy that laptop am I now in possession of a VCS dev board?

So I don't further clutter the no-fun-allowed thread:

Only we skeptics are the true followers of goddess Atari, as we revere the old ways and warn against following the NuTari charlatans. It is they who are blasphemers selling a fake religion and using trickery to deceive. Indeed, they have fooled many into believing they are the True Way with promises of Nutopia but show us only empty vessels. Oh, they're pretty vessels--ribbed for your pleasure--but empty nonetheless.

Clearly the only way to resolve this is to travel to Mount Fuji for a fight to the death through our ancient ritual of Blood Pong, to be followed by the traditional meal of tacos.

Anyone remember this classic dramatization?

Given that they said they were going to have a Linux based OS, what was the point of the video? If they were using a board running Windows literally all they showed off was their ability to get an emulator to run on off the shelf components, which I'm pretty sure a lot of people on this forum could do.

This board is the single biggest collection of Atari fans. I would not be so quick to discount their opinions. The number of people I know outside this site who know or care about Atari is statistically insignificant.

Hmm :? , if we assume that the Crowdfunding Campaign is not manipulated by the Atari Company then this is not the single biggest collection of Atari Fans.

It seems that this board is not representative at all for the popularity which apparently still exists and we were not aware of.

If even a crowdfunding campaign is so succesful which is only known to a handful of internet enthusiast and even if known, risky to participate, just imagine the number of people who would actually care about a new Atari product if they would see it in stores or on amazon.

Even many members here would care different if they would see the actual existing console in a store. Therefore i wouldnt say that the number of people who care is statistically insignificant.

P.S. You said this is the single biggest collection of Atari Fans. Reading all the posts here makes me wonder what you mean by that :D

Maybe you meant: The single biggest collection of Atari Haters. ;)

By the way: You and a few others complaint about my post when i said that many product reviews and other things are manipulated.

I dont want to destroy your view of the world but for example many Facebook likes, the number of Twitter Followers and many many amazon reviews are fake. Sorry to tell you that but thats whats known to people outside of this forum.

So you dont have to sigh or quote my text and portray me as a troll. Thats not very polite.

Alexkeaton, I think you're missing the point. We are ATARI fans, not ATARI SA fans. They are two completely different companies. One revolutionized video games and died, the other is parading around its corpse and tricking people into backing them. If the VCS team didn't lie to us or trick us and instead actually made a product before selling it in mass we probably wouldn't mind. I had a lot of hope for this console. But that hope died.

This is assuming this console is actually going to come out and actual stores are going to want to stock it. Two very big if's.

People here are big fans of the actual Atari before their name got sold to their current shady holding firm. Notice how active the boards here for every console made by the *actual* Atari.

Does other people doing something wrong make it less wrong when you do it? Answer: no. There exists many companies that do *not* do this.
