Flojomojo #11126 Posted July 10, 2018 It's a double-edged sword. Today's technology is much more democratic. There are cheap off the shelf boards that can do anything, open source operating systems available for free, unlimited marketing and publishing via social media and web technologies, easy direct sales facilitated by outfits like Indiegogo, even the ability to coordinate and direct large groups of fans and enthusiasts and get them to say things on your behalf ("can't wait to play!"). Consumer prices for 3D rendering, 3D printing, affordable overseas manufacturing, free tools for software development. No small company has to jump over the barriers of the old days to have a seat at the table. Having all that makes it difficult to have a professional product that rises above a hobby project or what can be done with a do-it-yourself mindset. Without a network effect of millions of users, or a huge ecosystem of fun and innovative software, it's really hard to stand out. Ways to stick out include really obsessive polish and quality, or a truly unique product with features that aren't available elsewhere, or maybe even some IP that people like and can't get anywhere else. Of course Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Apple are impossible for a little guy to catch. So one would have to play at a different game in order to be making something worth having, right?
godslabrat #11127 Posted July 10, 2018 Welp, for those that think we are insane, take a look at these "haters". These "haters" are on a totally different level. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTzyz2TgGls This is what I wish people remembered when they talk about "Big Bad Nintendo" back when they were king. Nintendo had plenty of it's own faults, but also had a rather unique market to contend with. A huge number of the NES clientele were first-time console owners who did NOT understand technology or generational shifts. Nintendo had to deal with flak that didn't really happen before or since. It partially explains some of the weirder things they did.

It partially explains some of the weirder things they did. That could explain who Sega was able to steal half of their US market share with Genesis 16-Bit, too. This "generation shift" was probably the first successful one until the Playstation came along and showed people how it is done.

+MrBlackCat #11132 Posted July 10, 2018 I will have to go a little off topic here as I don't have a lot of knowledge of Tacos... but I will keep it brief. ( ) Does it need 441 pages to point that out ? Not likely... probably twice that. It needs as many as it takes to get the point across that this is going to end badly for everyone without rose colored glasses. Not much I can say that hasn't already been said, but for kicks, describe this whole situation to someone rational, like a grandparent with wisdom etc... of course the wise will not try to sway a fool, but not everyone invested in this is a fool, but it probably isn't wise. Everyone should spend their money or even give it away blindly, as they wish... and many here are giving away their wisdom and time, as they wish. I am not sure if that is the purpose of an internet forum, but it is the way that most work. why all the animosity, If you you don't like it don't buy it... If you like it or want it then buy it.... end of story... wtf?!?! <snip> Weird as all h*ll to read and watch this stuff sometimes... I think half the animosity is toward those who support, therefore perpetuate these kind of business practices... which are pretty easy to prove as unreasonably high risk. There isn't even a known return on the investment, as it doesn't exist as a prototype yet. As long as no one is gambling more than they can afford to lose (monetarily, or emotionally) then no harm done. I am glad to see so many people putting SO much effort into sharing wisdom, even if some people are tired of hearing/seeing it... rose colored earmuffs might be needed with those rose colored glasses. Andromeda Stardust #11141 Posted July 10, 2018 I have absolutely no way of responding to that... that someone would a) want to lick their cat, b) come up with a product to do it, and c) find other people who would actually buy something so completely bonkers, totally explains why people will back the Ataribox. I take it all back. Fred knows exactly what he's doing. He's selling a game console to cat lickers. But he should've called it the Atari Lyyx. I use a normal handheld grooming brush like everyone else. I am not a cat. I don't bathe with my tongue, nor sniff butts like a dog. I'll keep my 1977 cartridges, thank you. Maybe this is a better investment, and it's a real product: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/266544-retron-77/
PlaysWithWolves #11142 Posted July 10, 2018 I sure wish Atari would give us something to talk about. They're not even engaging supporters on Indiegogo anymore and are coming up on a month since posting on Facebook. In update #4, supporters were promised a Q&A with Tin Giant's Rob Wyatt. They're either running behind or it just doesn't matter anymore. Yesterday, Atari SA did release the March 31st financial report and long-term strategy (French). A lot there, but they renewed the Roller Coaster Tycoon license another four years and in April received a €7.5 million cash influx. Also "Games license for Bayside Games to develop games of skill in fashion tournaments and player vs player offering real money compensation when the regulation allows it". Using cryptocurrency, natch. I have no idea what a "fashion tournament" is, but I'm going to guess the meaning is lost in Google translation.
Andromeda Stardust #11143 Posted July 10, 2018 http://guff.com/20-of-the-most-ridiculous-kickstarter-projects "I'm making potato salad. I haven't decided what kind yet." Seriously? That raised more then $55,000??? https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/zackdangerbrown/potato-salad That's yet ANOTHER reason I refuse and no longer participate in crowdfunding campaigns. Even the more "reputable" Kickstarter lets anything and everything on their website. They should have never let anything like that go live on their site. That isn't even a campaign or some kind of product or service to create that you would need to raise money for. That's the equivalent of creating a Kickstarter campaign, and taking a photo of your dog or cat and saying "This is my dog/cat! They are awesome! GIMME UR MONEY!!!" That's not a legitimate campaign. But whatever, Kickstarter is a business and they took their cut of the $55k that was raised, so in the end they're the ones laughing to the bank (along with the guy who owned the Potato salad campaign) But did the guy actually deliver potatoe salad to the masses? You could do a lot of catering for 50 grand. I hope it was a killer block party. I personally find potatoe salad to be gag-inducing, but to each their own. I have no idea what a "fashion tournament" is, but I'm going to guess the meaning is lost in Google translation.Sounds a lot like gambling devices if it offers chance payout. The Roller Coaster Tycoon deal combined with the Bayside Games makes the IndieGogo campaign look like chump change. Why they even needed crowdfunding is beyond me. Good news is there's plenty of cash pool to sink into development. If they launch Ataribox, then file bankruptcy the following week/month/year after the console tanks, I still get to keep my joystick.

carlsson #11149 Posted July 10, 2018 (edited) ^^ Yeah, I kind of have read about that, though I don't know for which purpose others than very young children would consider putting SD cards in their mouth so they need to coat them with something bad tasting. But I'm sure genuine Atari cartridges of all models taste great, just that I haven't really taken the opportunity to taste myself. Perhaps as a dessert after the tacos? They added Bitrex so that children (and curious adults) won't eat the Switch games. Mainly it's for preventing children from drinking bleach, ammonia, etc.
