New Atari Console that Ataribox?

Recommended Posts

I feel a little strange with this being my first post since I joined but I live on the beach and fish tacos have always been the go-to here.

So you came for the Tacos!

I thought it was decided, Fish tacos are not tacos?

I originally came for the RetroVGS but have stayed for the Taco Talk. And because I was able to show a coworker this thread when he was seriously contemplating pre-ordering this thing on the IGG.

For noobs and taco-haters, this is what started all the taco talk. It still holds up today, and by the time we find out if it reaches production many tacos could've been eaten:

All I know is that I have a future financial decision to make: AtariBox or tacos?

I'm going with tacos. They have a better chance of reaching production, and also taste better than plastic.

There are so many good posts since the following one that it's almost a shame we didn't update it with new links over time (i.e., copy-paste into new posts). Alternatively, Flojomojo's response to 80s_Atari_Guy done-up with links would work nicely too. I'm not volunteering Flo or anyone because I'm feeling too lazy today to do either of those myself. :P

Any of our European friends have thoughts about this?

Nintendo's "Illegal" Pre-Order System Issue Has Been Passed On To German Authorities

Earlier this year, the Norwegian Consumer Council argued that four major online gaming stores had broken the Norwegian Consumer Act by employing consumer-unfriendly (and potentially illegal) pre-ordering systems. Valve, Sony, and EA were under fire for not obtaining "express consent from the consumer and his acknowledgement that he thereby loses his right of withdrawal", whereas Nintendo was in even deeper trouble by failing to offer consumers any option to cancel software pre-ordered on the eShop - a system which is in violation of Norwegian and European right of appeal.

I suspect my line of reasoning is clear ... if normal video game companies are in hot water for not allowed to let people cancel "pre-orders," I'll bet they'll have something to say about crowdfunding campaigns that say things like

Backers can process a refund for their transaction made to a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, provided a campaign is live and not ended, the perk claimed has not been fulfilled, and the funds have not been disbursed to the campaigner.

For campaigns in InDemand, backers can request a refund from Indiegogo within 10 days of the transaction provided the InDemand page is live, the perk has not been fulfilled, and the funds have not been disbursed to the campaigner.

Agreed, quesadillas are for children and Napoleon Dynamite.

https://youtu.be/poO2BsVGdIU

HEY I'm eating bacon and cheese quesadillas for lunch with fresh chili peppers from my garden. They have been scrumptious so far and I was really needing to clean the fridge out.

I am totally offended to be compared in any fashion to dynamite. That movie sucked balls and wasn't funny other than the dance scene. And honestly the dance scene wasn't worth sitting through the rest of the stuff.

But yes tacos and fajitas are better.

Last night's fare, standard Taco Bell soft tacos and pintos & cheese. Both Fire sauce and El-Yucateco XXXtra Hot applied to all.

Well seems like someone doesn't like me looking at the comment section. Oh well. Was just hoping to like find an update.

So I have been thinking. I am excited for Intellivision's new console, but my excitement for the VCS ran out quickly due to how they went about it.

I was wondering what would it take for you to buy the VCS (assuming you haven't backed it)?

Let us assume it comes out looking like it does and with the same specs as listed.

For me price was a huge factor. While being sleek looking it is just too expensive for what it is. I would rather put the money towards a computer that could do and play more for the money. I needs to be about $90 cheaper (base unit no controllers) to be appealing.

Second thing is the games. I don't need this to play Steam games. If I want to play Steam I should just get that computer. Tempest 4000 looks cool but it isn't exclusive, so I will be able to get it on my Xbox. As far as being a legacy device it is too expensive.

So another thing I like about the New Intellivision console is that they have an idea of what they want there system to be. I am still trying to figure out why I should get the VCS (other than I would like to see a new Atari system that is good and puts out good games).

So if it was cheaper and had some exclusives that were worthwhile I would probably be in.

What would it take for me to buy? First, it would have to exist. No 'preorder,' no 'coming soon,' Show me the product and I'll show you the money.

Second, the price. I'd drop $100 on this, if it was ready to play out of the box (no pun intended). Console, power supply, hookups, controller, and at least one game. Any price over $100 requires an exclusive game- a killer AP. I bought the N.E.S. for Zelda, the S.N.E.S. for Mario Paint, the PS1 for Twisted Metal, The XBox360 for Silent Hill Downpour (not my best decision), you get the idea.

Finally, I would have to be a Netflix loving mom, not a Taco Troll.

Of all the awesome that was on SNES it was Mario Paint? Lol I did play it alot myself. It really was the pre-mario maker.

I am binging Netflix right now. Almost done with season 5 of Star Trek Next Generation. Streaming is also not a selling point for myself.

If it were $100 and it were ready to play out of the box, a couple good exclusive games and maybe a few good ports of some multiplatform games. The Jaguar had AvP, Rayman and Tempest 2000 and good ports of Doom and Wolfenstein. I'd spend $100 on a console to get 3 really good exclusive games and a couple good ports of multiplatform games. I paid more then $100 for my used Jaguar to get those 5 games alone plus paying the expensive prices of the used Jaguar cartridges. And I would need to buy it from a store or "preorder" it from a place like Amazon or Gamestop. No crowdfunding "preorders" or purchasing through crowdfunding sites whatsoever.

At $300-400, it would need a library with a vast selection of good games on par with the Switch, PS4, etc for me to consider buying it. And that simply isn't feasible nor will it ever happen.

Streaming services like Netflix are irrelevant. I already own a half dozen devices that can stream Netflix or Hulu. Thats not a factor at all, not even in the slightest.

@Flojomojo: I have no clues about those pre-orders and the option to cancel them, though in particular EU regulations can be like a maze of twisty little passages, all looking alike. Now Atari SA is a French company in the middle of this maze so if anyone should be able to have lawyers telling them what is accepted and not, they should be it.

Speaking of pre-ordering, I understand that the latest batch of NES Mini is more or less sold out again, despite stricter limitations on number of units per person. I haven't looked up the retail price, if it has been raised since last time but I'm puzzled how it can keep selling like hot cakes. Then again it is more like a < $100 device, not a ~$300 device (or more, given the IGG bundles after the initial campaign) as the Atari VCS is planned to be.

Some of the IGG comments are indistinguishable from satire. If this were any other subject or in any other location, I'd assume they were joking.

I can’t wait to hear Rob Wyatts answers to the questions.this guy and his tin giant team are going to make the atari vcs awsome.

@Atari
Thank you for the update on the FAQ-thing. I’m eagerly waiting for all the answers (and hope some of my questions made it into the FAQ) and of course for the next update.
You’re doing a great job!

It’s kinda bugging me that the campaign is literally right below 3 million… Lol..

The biggest concern I have is that this device may not be able to play in hardware, H265 video, which could make it yesterday’s media player. It’s important that Atari chooses the right AMD chipset so that modern features are available. Also the USB3 ports should be A/V types to allow expansion for VR and other possibilities.

What would it take for me to buy one? A plan.

I'm fine with the price, though there's no way I'd commit that to a crowd funding campaign from someone as sleazy as Atari SA. But I need a plan, not hopes and dreams. Show me games. Show me exclusives. Show me real developers, not the garage bands you've assembled. Show me that the machine has any hope of being useful moving forward. Show me that there's any real reason for the console to exist other than trying to pad Fred Chesnais' wallet.

I don't mind wasting money, but what I'm buying has to offer SOMETHING unique, and a dead logo doesn't cut it.

They could've released Tempest 4000 as an AVCS exclusive. But that would mean long-term planning to recoup sales losses from other platforms, such as through their monthly subscription or store. Atari wants insta-profit from PC and console sales to drive up stock prices. And there's always the lingering question of "Other than T4K, why do I need an Atari VCS?"

Speaking only for myself, I could care less about some of the continuing drama from unruly malcontents who have been banned from this thread or board. I'm just glad their noise has been muted here. If they're gonna get themselves banned on other boards, more power to them. It's amusing that Atari gets to deal with their drama on their own IGG comments board now. Can Atari even control who says what and how often on those comments? Originally, their cheerleader marketing folks were posting the touchy-feely "let's be a friendly community" stuff in response to their complainers. Now they don't even appear to be trying to wrangle their mob anymore, so the miscreants can try to trigger their mob all they want. It should continue to devolve as the weeks and months roll on.
