New Atari Console that Ataribox?

Recommended Posts

So Atari fans (like those on Atariage) that grew up playing the Atari 2600 and other Atari consoles will want it since it's something "new" from "Atari" and has an Atari logo on it.

And millenials/hipster dudes/people under 35 will want it so they can use Netflix, Hulu, social media, Pandora, and Spotify on their TVs.

He obviously didn't think that through very well, and I have two questions, one for each of the groups.

Besides the Atari logo and the fact it's from a completely different corporation that bears the same name as the company that created the original Atari 2600/VCS, why would any "real" Atari fan over age 35 want this?

And why would a "hipster dude" or someone or someone under 35 want to pay $300 for this for Netflix, Hulu, Social media and Pandora when there are significantly cheaper devices available today that already do all of that? And more then likely, the average "hipster dude" or person under 35 probably currently owns more devices then he can count on one hand that already play Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, etc.

What a disaster!

The latest edition of Montgomery Gabrys' Copyright Infringement Extravaganza is up. Find it yourself if you care, I'm not going to link it here and give him any more attention. Or not, it's no great loss if you give it a miss.

So is "Atari" scheduled for any type of public exhibition or convention as a company where the general public can attend anytime soon? Hell even one with some legit journalists\media coverage would do too as long as it was on video. I can't wait to watch such a fire burn.

PRGE and Houston Arcade Expo are both happening this weekend.

You'd think that if "Atari" were serious about connecting with their fans*, they'd have some sort of presence at one or both of them. Even just a small booth where they could be running Flashbacks, sponsoring giveaways, selling T-shirts, handing out flyers for the Ataribox**, or having some Atari arcade games*** for people to play. Just something to generate a little goodwill.

*That is, fans of the original Atari. The current Atari has none.

**Just kidding. They don't have enough information to fill up an entire flyer. Maybe a pamphlet.

***They'd have to rent some. Clearly, they don't actually own any. They'd probably screw up though and end up renting "Atari Games" arcade games, and have to keep answering awkward questions like, "This is great! When are you bringing San Francisco Rush to the Ataribox?"

It's seriously a good point though. Why no presence at prge? They must have a legit demo unit by now that they could show no? At the very least the prge would have it's own kick ass taco stand

Here's why Atari isn't at PRGE - they're too busy getting ready to ship their "new" retro gaming console and joystick in time for the holidays! The moment you've been waiting for is here!! The internet is fairly abuzz with indifference excitement! Just wait until tomorrow when their stock prices skyrocket!

These are all from the last couple of days:

BGR: Atari is releasing a new handheld and retro joystick to make you feel like a kid again

Variety: Atari Releasing Wood Veneered Portable 2600

Bleeding Cool New: Atari Shows Off Their Atari Retro Handheld for the Holidays

SyFy Wire: Gaming: ...the Atari 2600 wayback machine...

SciFi Monkeys: Time to get old school with Atari's Retro Handheld and Retro Plug & Play Joystick

(And yes... I know none of this is even remotely new. Or news. And no, you can't get them in the U.S.)

To their credit, this is a slightly better path than crypto currencies or pong game shows.

I thought it was because "Atari" only has eyes for investors and licensing partners? They've shown little but contempt for the end users. Take a look at their website and tell me I'm wrong.

It all makes sense now why Fred is really in the US: To play the lotto of 1.6 billion dollars with his $3 million.

Yeeaahhhh..... The recent comments there are getting really ridiculous. Don't get me wrong-- I'm still interested in the VCS.... but those other people are saying weird things like "the VCS is amazing, and if you don't think so your opinion is wrong!"
