New Atari Console that Ataribox?

Recommended Posts

Europe had Virgin Megastores in 82'?

Apparently the first Megastore opened in 1979. The article doesn't say when they opened in Dublin, though they had 3 years to expand. Nowadays it seems all stores have closed down, with the possible exception of some stores in the Middle East, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Morocco still being operated under the brand name.

LOL!

It reminds me of the plot to a sci-fi satire story I read called Jennifer Government: the best way create hype for a product was to not sell it. So they just put it on display and killed every one who got their hands on an item. People would line up for miles and the exclusivity would create so much hype that people would go crazy for it. How best to create brand awareness, loyalty and hyper-demand than a product which you want but cannot have, and literally will have to die for.

Sounds like that Atari Box's exclusive taco games.

LOL! :rolling:

Not so bad idea. Atari already loves RollerCoaster Tycoon, perhaps they can obtain the rights to Pizza Tycoon too, unless they already own those.

It's really nice to see a corporate CEO engage with the fans in such a personal and direct way.

I’d love to buy games on physical media (CD/DVD/Cartridge) and/or make a backup, and play games without internet access or a server. There were some problems with game servers being taken down with other companies, and all bought games were worthless afterwards. I hope Atari is taking this into account. I can still play the original cartridges on my old VCS 2600 for example.

Before talking exclusives: remember that there are tons of cool little games that do not do well because of a lack of media exposition. A simple “News:games of the week” page with highlight of such games would almost put them in the “exclusive” category.

I remember playing missile command in the arcades it was awesome. I was great at the game I remember the guys behind me waiting to play the game would try to put me off by making noises or clapping their hands or stomping their feet but it make me lose.

Four-ish months down, about nine-ish to go. The excitement should be building soon!

But seriously, spending a few 10s of K, licensing out a few niche, but well-respected games, from several years back, that might fit the Atari "look and feel", might be their best bet. Something like "Hero of Many". Or that Frog game from the OUYA. ;)

Contains colorful language and a good bit of fun, by people who seem to be the target audience. (I thought it was pretty fun too, after struggling with the early learning curve. Much better as a party game.)

His left eye (from someone looking at him) looks like there's some growth or eye rot he's covering up. Maybe he's one of those alien lizard overlords in disguise.

Makes me want to hook up my Ouya again. There was one game on the Ouya that was a modern take on Hat Trick that I actually loved playing called "Ice Rage". I think it cost me $3, well worth it IMO

With any luck, this could be the tipping point where the lack of progress has to be admitted to and exposed to the masses. After that I'm sure they should also be expected to let everyone know exactly how much of the backers money they have pissed away. I wonder how mjuch is left of that 3 million? All of which has been wasted as it has amounted to nothing.

Curious, has the Atari TaCOO Michael Arzt said anything significant in social media, about the Atacobox, since his numpty interview with 'The Register'? Or have they shoved a pillow in face?

I'm not on any social media, hence the query.

PS. Sorry if he has and I missed the boat, deeper in this thread.

Looks like Atari SA is not following the guidelines of updating at least every month. The last update was two months ago.

I'm sure they'll release another "we need to keep some secrets but great things are coming soon!" non-update before long. IndieGoGo has shown little historical interest in making their campaigns accountable or responsive, which was a major reason folks have been calling this a scam from the start. That Sinclair remake that failed to deliver only gave out refunds after a backer-initiated lawsuit forced them too.

He appeared for a fluff "interview" at some game expo a few months ago, as little to say as ever.

You don't need to be on social media to check their links, which are at the bottom of the Ataribox page.

Facebook last updated on Sept 11 (no statements or answers, just an automatic thing saying they changed their web address)

Twitter last updated June 5th

Instagram July 4th with the same pics we've seen elsewhere

YouTube May 30th with its lies about Tempest 4000 running natively

IndieGogo where they mostly tell people to ask others about refund requests

don't forget TinGiant.com (Rob Wyatt's company) which put up a "test post" on Sept 23rd but nothing else on their blank Wordpress template

In short, you haven't missed anything. If you follow this thread you'll get what you need to know, served with a stack of sarcastic tacos and a side of salsa picante.

But yeah, I share your feeling that the True Believers need a shot of something to keep the faith. Simple as that.

I agree that we’re overdue for another update. The point of this Indiegogo campaign is so Atari could be more communicative with fans. They’re doing an abysmal job at keeping tabs with us unfortunately. I like the way the system itself seems to be taking shape in terms of the actual design/approach, but the communication with customers leaves a lot to be desired if you ask me.

it'd be cool if IGG would make the lack of updates actionable- but like Flojo was saying, likely not and with Atari SA issuing a 'it's really coming, folks, we promise!' post.

it makes me sad that legit good projects get ignored because of stuff like this.

Remember, it's the backers who are making this possible, and they're doing this together. It wouldn't be possible without the backers and they want them to be there every step of the way.
