JBerel #14551 Posted December 19, 2018 Just make sure there's lots of wire around. That always looks like we know what we're doing.

pacman000 #14553 Posted December 19, 2018 Why do they have all these renders of the different parts that make up the Xbox controller, and all these different wood samples, but not one picture of the circuit board? With Mike Kennedy, he had all his claims about the console and what it could do, but there was no way to disprove what he said, because it was all hypothetical and what he intended to make the final console when it was released in a year or two. But once Mike Kennedy showed the actual circuit board, he got caught, and you couldn't give him the benefit of the doubt or say maybe he is telling the truth. Maybe AtariBox will live up to what they say it will be. We have no way to prove them wrong, because they have produced no board to show what they are actually doing. It is reasonable for them to say they are making changes, and things are evolving, but they should have multiple circuit boards showing the progress of the work they are doing. How could they not have at least one board at this point? They have a dozen wood samples, but no board? True. There should at least be a breadboard or something. Maybe two bread boards; one for testing National Semiconductor chips; the other for testing Motorola chips.
dj_convoy #14554 Posted December 19, 2018 (edited) Whatta no update update. Obviously, if I were a backer, the progress (or lack thereof) would be really disturbing. Keep the 5200's name out of your mouths, Infogrames (or the disinformation wizards behind the updates). You obviously don't know a goddamn thing about it. x=usr(1536) #14556 Posted December 20, 2018 Looks like today's a twofer for Ataribollocks PR fail - they also released a new update on the Indiegogo campaign page. Clearly, Atari SA has such a fine understanding of the history of the company whose name they whore out like it's down at the docks and the Navy's in town so greatly cherish that they saw fit to use a crappy Arcade1UP cabinet (on sale at a Wal-Mart near you now!) as the header image for their update rather than anything worthwhile that Atari actually made back when they were a real company.
+frankodragon #14557 Posted December 20, 2018 If I knew any better, those gears in the pic resemble from someone who works on a model railroad, not electronics. Of course, there are electronics on a model railroad including USB connections, but this picture does look fishy.

+Nathan Strum #14560 Posted December 20, 2018 Pretty sure that's Billy Mitchell. Right before his epic Dragster run. Gotta love how they strategically place the random components and soldering gear in the frame to make it look like there are electronics in the picture. Those brass motor gears, stand off posts, binder clips, electronic test probes, inspection microscope and alcohol swabs are going to be really helpful while assembling all that plastic and micro electronics that don't exist. I always like to keep my push down alcohol dispenser right in front of my solder iron. I always find flammable vapors and heating elements make for a fun work space. Why would a work table full of curiously placed components and soldering gear make you suspicious? Seems perfectly normal to me...

JBerel #14567 Posted December 20, 2018 (edited) You know what else is made out of genuine wood? Paper......as in...paper stickers with genuine faux wood grain milled in it or printed on it. Part of being an open device is you can "make it your own" by putting you're own stickers on it too!. Cool! If this thing ever ships in any form, shape, or fashion, I desperately want to be in the room when the backers open their deluxe special edition to see the 15 cent laminate decal they got for their extra $100 or so. Lodmot #14569 Posted December 20, 2018 (edited) aaworkbench.jpg Looking closer at that picture of the two joysticks, I'm noticing that something seems...... off.... Is it just me, or does the base of that disassembled joystick on the right appear taller than the left controller? Aren't they supposed to be the same? Maybe it's a different molding, not sure.... It was just something peculiar I noticed, and I'm a very visual person. EDIT: Atari actually responded to me regarding the controller with the black tape: That's a Power A Xbox One unit. We are told they taped it up so it was easier to photoshop when the designers were playing with different design and concepts. It's nice to see them at least acknowledging they were photoshopping their concept images. Edited December 20, 2018 by Lodmot
Flojomojo #14570 Posted December 20, 2018 Did you catch the joint where the stick attaches to the base unit? It attaches to an 8th inch plastic square knob like you see under a thumbstick. The red part is not a fire button on the stick, but where the tiny plastic peg screws into the big hand stick. If it were to ever exist, it would snap off the minute you touch it. What a complete clusterf#@k. I see what you mean, that's completely unworkable. It would break instantly if it were real. They have a few more backers who would appear not to mind having their intelligence insulted. $3,007,915 USD total funds raised. I like the way they've swept their other little controversy under the rug. As part of the most recent update, they are having a raffle for a 1up mini-arcade. They said that it would only be for North American backers (so they could drop ship it for free, presumably) ... ... but in response to international rending of garments and gnashing of teeth, they will offer it to all. They didn't change the original posting, of course (not sure if they can, since it was part of a progress update). Not that it matters, since there's no way to know how they're selecting the winning backer. Because really, deep down, aren't they all winners?
Clint Thompson #14571 Posted December 20, 2018 I foresee a ton of broken controllers in the near future should they ever actually ship. Unless they make it out of titanium, they look highly prone to snapping or breaking.
Flojomojo #14572 Posted December 20, 2018 From here. "Paltering" is what we do when we tell the truth in service of a lie. Just sprinkle on enough truth to garner a little goodwill or sympathy, but not enough to turn your lie into the whole truth. We asked participants to imagine selling a used car on eBay.com, and told them they would receive a bonus if they actually succeeded in selling it. Participants were told that the car had some issues in the past year and that a potential buyer wrote to them asking whether the car has ever had problems. In one condition, participants could choose to tell the truth or palter. In a second condition, participants could choose whether to lie outright or tell the truth. They knew, in both conditions, that the chances of selling the car were the highest if they lied outright (80%) and the lowest if they told the truth (30%), as it is often the case in real negotiations. If they were to palter, their chances of success would be somewhere in between (60%). The result? Participants who faced the choice of either paltering or telling the truth misled the buyer more often (71%) than those who faced the choice of either lying outright or telling the truth (55%), even if this came at a cost. Here is an interesting fact that explains why people prefer paltering over telling outright lies: It allows them to maintain an image of themselves as honest and trustworthy individuals (after all, their paltering was truthful). We all care about being good people and being seen by others as such. In fact, when it comes to honesty, we generally believe we are better than others.

Paltering.png Yeah, after reading their response and thinking about it, I found it to be very odd. Photoshopping the buttons to be blank/solid black is not difficult. Even I could do that, and I'm not even that good at Photoshop... Still though, I was surprised that they actually responded to my comment instead of just outright deleting it. I was expecting the latter. Edited December 20, 2018 by Lodmot
JBerel #14575 Posted December 20, 2018 They were photoshopping the Power A xbox controller because it is the AtariBox modern controller though with a very slightly different shell. That is, if and when they actually make a functional shell for it. I also question the second classic stick. To me it's either another photoshop job of the one that they have, or a second 3d print job which is a little off. Doesn't much matter which. It's all bullshit.
