New Atari Console that Ataribox?

Recommended Posts

I wish I had half the optimism/enthusiasm about life in general that Johnphelan1979 has about the Ataribox. I hope it doesn't crush him too bad when this thing ultimately winds up being the next Gameband.

He's either the dumbest person alive or the greatest troll ever.

He's one of a handful of vocal backers that seem to have genuine developmental disabilities, so I try to keep my snark in check.

Speaking of which, Rob Wyatt....

So he joined the "project" at the end of June last year, and sometime between then and now he's made phenomenal progress on making a generic AMD test board boot, busted his femur and back, had rods installed, done physical therapy and been back to work for many, many months. Seems legit.

I was thinking about this same thing today. That whole 'been back to work for many many months' response by Atari SA really got me.

Do people who are passionate about a timely release of a single product that will make or break the company take time off to surf the skies?

Usually they work round the clock because they believe in something and enjoy the challenge...

Seems the AtacoBox is just a pass-time for these hulahoops

I ponder the John Phelans of the world....Or at least this one.

His opinions seem,...Well...Optimistic.

A Case Study in WTF are you smoking? And can I get some?

He writes too coherently for real mental disabilities, yet...He appears to have access to rose colored glasses the likes of which the world has never seen. He should be renting those out to all depressed patients, or giving access at Bar Mitzvahs, funerals, and Boy Scout meetings...We could all be so lucky to wear them for a few...Probably give us one of those weekends which would live on in legend and myth...Unhindered by the doldrums and ennui of day to day reality...

I wonder if he's on Atari's payroll or legitimately (Ridiculously, Blinders Full-On) Enthusiastic ?

Perhaps he has very fond memories of Actual Atari (Something we all can understand), but then IIRC his claims of still owning/playing all the old classic systems would seem to fall by the wayside, like so many "looks good on paper" dreams of Kickstartered madness...I love Combat as much as the next guy (and I Love my ATARI 2600!), but who among us, in this day and age...Still gets up, and giddily thinks to him/herself "Man! Today I'm gonna play some Atari!!! World be Damned! ***Sporting a Wide Grin, a Sinister twinkle, a deranged look, verging on the Edge of Sanity*** Gonna bust out some Asteroids and be in hog heaven, get a boner playing Combat, and if I'm really a good boy, treat myself to a quick round of Missile Command!" ? I mean, I love new games and homebrews, And still revisit the classics on occasion...But to have it So built up in your mind?.....I'm thinking he has no classic systems, just memories of the old days, like forgotten dreams of the "before times", a foggy, fragile, futuristic, illogistic, Nutopia,... Served up in a restaurant in Tomorrowland, with a side of the soon forthcoming Belle Epoque of Wonderment and Dreams to Behold ...He's looking forward to revisiting the Classic experience once he has the nutari VCS...

And if all he's looking for is an Atari logo, and a quick game of Combat or Centipede, he won't be disappointed.

Now,...I don't know whether I should pity him or envy him...

Some people just CAN NOT consider the possibility they backed the wrong horse.

it's not a horse, it's a dog with the same name as a famous horse, and the dog has heartworm, mange, impacted anal glands, and an unpleasant personality.

Maybe he used some of the Atacobox Indiegonowhere spondoolies to buy himself a 1.21 jigawatt Delorean?

Will be so disappointed if it's just another Android device with games on it...… but, the truth is.. odds that is all it will be with an Atari logo on it...with some IPs...

"Apple Pay is also rolling out to more than 7,000 Taco Bell locations in the next few months" -Jan23 2019

This way you can all get sub par Tacos faster so you can get back to playing on the Atacobox, if it is ever released... or at least get back to commenting on this thread about how it will never be released.

I still LIKE dogs, and I don't like the thing that claims to be Atari these days.

Ricky the carnivorous pony?

Damn. I can't find a suitable image from the film "Honky Tonk Freeway"

To answer the 'why' part of the 'will it play Atari 5200 games?' question: forbidden fruit.

We never got the 5200 in Europe, though those of us with the 8-bit machines did get a taste of them through dumps of 5200 carts that had been hacked to run on the 8-bits. I can recall playing hacked dumps of Xevious, Jungle Hunt, and Gremlins on the 800 and 800XL, and probably a couple of others that are escaping my memory right now.

Copies of those games were in fairly wide circulation, and if he was attending the same user group meetings I was (or knew someone who was), he may have seen those, got the backstory, and decided that the 5200 was the most amazing thing ever.

Either way - and I say this as I type on the keyboard of my MacBook Pro - his Atari mania makes the average rabid Apple fanboi look like someone with a passing interest in the Interton VC 4000.

I remember seeing this catalog as a tween, wishing I could play Atari 5200 games too ... I lived in the right country, but they were impossibly expensive at the time, even on sale in 1983. $30 games in 1983 is like over $75 today, and $119 for the console in 1983 is like $300 today.

Even so, that was from the days of Garfield plushes and cassette boom boxes. Move on, man! They weren't all that!!

I found a script to hit "next" on the IGG pages so folks could search the "Atari" responses and peruse the list of backers. They used to be a lot more active than they are now. You can see the transformation from hopeful (it's gonna be great, welcome aboard!) to helpful (check your backerkit messages) to apologetic (overwhelmed with orders)

It's not perfect (there are duplications) but it's searchable.

And finally, some screenshots of the most passionate Atariboxers:

Considering they have a "rendered" controller (and a faceplate) who knows if they can even get that super-duper controller they have to mimic a 5200 controller.
