I'm not sure what he means by "the Speccy reborn fiasco"... The Recreated ZX Spectrum was released, so I guess he's talking about the Vega+ which hasn't "gone quiet"; we now know what happened. And I don't think it is "delightfully similar", since there were more regular updates for example.
I actually backed the Vega+ but there was no way of knowing what would happen since it was made by the same guys who did the Vega (which was no scam) - they left afterwards to create The C64 Mini. So I was not giving money to someone I don't know technically...

Reading it nearly brought a tear to my eye, and I truly believe it's because of this rather than the content itself.  It shouldn't feel refreshing; it should be status-quo.

But in the new "Millennial mentality," every scam artist is not only innocent until proven guilty, they are frickin heroes for having vision, imagination and courage to fight the good fight. The fact that they fail, or were never even remotely capable in the first place, is just further proof of their underdog status. There used to be healthy skepticism and informed consumers. Now it's just cultist fanboys and enablers with no justification for their blind loyalty. The rest are, predictably, seen as haters who dare to not believe the best possible rosy outcome. God forbid anyone see the scammy writing on the wall. Just dumb.

I can think of a few reasons "Atari VCS" is not getting mainstream tech/game press. 

1. Old brand doesn't pull the clicks like Nintendo or Sony stories. 
2. There's really not much to the tale other than self serving press releases, since very few people (if any) have laid hands on working hardware. 
3. "Atari is back" was probably the biggest bump they'll get, because of the joke/novelty factor. 
4. Atari PR is too afraid/inept to put themselves into a situation where they might be asked embarrassing or difficult questions. 
5. Yet another crowdfunding story with success in fundraising, but failure to deliver, is "dog bites man," not unique or interesting at all. 
6. Giving attention to undeserving attention-seekers only helps "Atari." Let the CEO humiliate himself on Fox Business for that.

Neglected to mention earlier: in speaking with my mother this weekend, I conducted an informal, yet completely-binding, Netflix Mom poll.  Sample size one, so totally representative of how any Netflix Mom would find the Ataribollocks^(tm) far superior to other alternatives in that regard.

 

"Mom, apropos of nothing: if there was a device that let you watch Netflix on your TV, would you buy it?"

 

"I don't understand the question - the cable box has Netflix built-in.  I use that.  Why would I buy something else to do it with?"

 

Atari SA, that'll be $3M for the market research.  You're welcome.

In their favor: three million dollars, a year's head start, and a daredevil hardware engineer who doesn't care what you think. 

 

Working against them: umm, a process that requires that everything be run through PR, and a demonstrated lack of a clue?

That was probably me. I agree that this is not how you do it, but my assumption is that they thought it'd be a brilliant way to create perceived value, as they could tout millions collected in pre-orders and who like Microsoft or Apple or Google wouldn't even blink at spending a few million to own the Atari name? Fred mentions at almost every investor meeting (that I've seen a record of) getting bought out. It's definitely something the guy is occupied with

 

My imagined scenario as to how this whole thing came up: 

 

[Emergency company meeting sometime in late 2016/early 2017] 

 

"I really want to zell this company, as I keep zeeing these startups get bought out for billions of dollars, and that Notch guy made $2B for one stupid game and we've got lots of popular stupid games! Zo tell me, what's the best way for us to look more valuable than we really are?"

"Get into the taco business?"

"You might have something zhere, but I'd have to hire a chef. Next"

"Well, the Atari 2600 was iconic, how about a 2600 Classic?"

"Hello McFly!? <derogatory chuckle> We have the Flashbecks. Zhose cretins at Nintendo stole our thunder. Next."

"Hey Fred, I know you like crowdfunding, so how about we shoot our wad on Indiegogo with something "better" than the Flashback. It'll be the Ouya, but shaped like a 2600. That'll create so much hype, we'll get bought out before we have to worry about actually making something."

"Now we're talking! I like it, I like very much! But what if vwe aren't bought out in time?"

"I still think my taco idea is best, but there's the Gameband that we quietly killed. We'll just do the same to the VCS and sue more people that use the Atari name until Google notices us."

This is what they've always wanted, from day zero of this AtariVCS/Atacobox fiasco. Freddy & Co. want to wash their hands of Atari.
