JBerel
2 hours ago, OCAT said: I think everyone in this thread has overlooked the most cruicial and glaring mistake Atari has made with the alleged release of this "Console" ATARI HAS NO MASCOT! Nintendo has Mario, Sega had Sonic, Xbox has Master Chief, Turbo grafx had Bonk (after Keith Courage), Playstation... well Crash Bandicoot? well they have a few... If Atari want to be taken seriously they need to find a mascot fast! how are they going to differenciate themselves from the others? I say let it be female, they can ride the wave that has taken Hollywood movies by storm, this way they might have a chance to sell consoles. Anyone dare to come up with ideas to help them? I suggest "Pitfall Holly", they can make a game in the Tomb Raider series where a strong Amazonian woman has to save the weak feable men from captors. This could be plan B for Atari, make this a game system and platform for women, programmed by women for women gaming... Mr. CHeeseGuy, I think it is time you step aside and let a Woman run Atari, this would be the publicity you NEED at your most darkest hour. You also will need a catchphrase or a jingle... like "Get Atari. Get Woke." What do you mean, no mascot. They've been in endorsement talks with Ackky for months. He's the perfect mascot and will be appearing in their first party launch title which will run at 1/8 speed and show the full power of their unconsole. On 12/5/2019 at 11:02 AM, JBerel said: Not to perpetuate more fraud, but one of their pics does seem to show the front and underside of this shiny plastic delight. I bet they have a stack of sticky laser-cut wood grain paper labels laying around to stick on the front. That would seem to suggest these are in fact what they hope to send to backers, despite calling them pre-production testing samples. So ya gotta give them credit for at least getting someone to make injection molds finally. Having any functional electronics to put inside, let alone content to run on it is a different matter. I sure hope they get Ackky the Sloth, Official Atari Mascot to sign each of these highly collectible units.
carlsson
Previously in this thread, the Centipede was also brought up as a possible mascot for Atari. Given that it is one of few classic games they still seem to own the rights to, why not use it? Not sure if it needs to be Ms. Centipede, sexualized or not. toiletunes
I think the mascot needs to be something new, not based on existing IP. Looking backwards is what causes them so much trouble. They need to reinvent themselves to move forward. I suggest something unique and edgy, how about Charly, the Dead French Horse? The pack in game can be Stick Beater! The goal is to beat a dead horse with a stick until it disintegrates. 4

Original characters done by me. LOL I was going for a sort of Yin-Yang dynamic/friendship. I also remember I was considering drawing them sort of leaning against/peeking out from behind the Atari VCS logo, to kind of promote the characters for the console. Yeah...... I had all these weird creative ideas floating in my head when I was still excited for it. It's kinda sad. I vaguely recall that Atari was intending to make Bentley Bear its mascot when Crystal Castles was released. Between the North American video game crash and Crystal Castles' only moderate sales numbers, it's no surprise that Atari never put much effort into that. OCAT
Since Atari cannot compete on brute force graphics capability, they need to pull a Nintendo and compete on gameplay, I would suggest Jazzing up old games with flamboyant graphics to appeal to people who are not hard core gamers but want to feel like how they did back in the Arcade days with lights, sounds (Q-sound) and wizzing action, and NOT beeps and Boops like old atari games. Take games like Ghouls 'N Ghosts Ultimate or Double Dragon Neon, same game jazzed up, and another strong point is the music. My goodness the Streets Mango Tango level (go listen on youtube) just awesome. Other mentions is music from old games like Konami's Voilent-Storm (best rap I ever heard), and X-men 6 player game (Junk Factory) Games that teeter on the complete rediculousness like Ninja Baseball Batman are not graphics power hungry but are just so much fun and easy to play. Atari needs an in-house dev and not solely rely on third party. The VCS need a gimmic like Nintendo, they had the Wii-Mote, slapping a controller with more than 2 buttons on it will turn away old and casual gamers that grew up with NES, Atari and what not. Look for inspiration like "Typing Of The Dead", simple games like Legend Of Zelda did well because of a story and adventure full of clues and not 12 analog sticks and 24 buttons to push. I might dare suggest ripping off Rob Wyatts latest KickScammer (allegedly) The GameBoard, make Board games and allow people to use cell phones as a controller (Wifi or Bluetooth). The Atari will display a large gameboard on the TV and the cell phone will display the info for each player. The old boardgame CLUE! is a good candidate. There are many older people that do not have 23 hours a day to learn how to play these new games, or the hands to button mash like they used to back in the day. I dont know what Atari can do to save this thing but hard core games is not the answer, the people that want to play these games want Next Gen consoles with insane graphics at super refresh rates on the TV, to them it is serious competition, shaving off 3 seconds on a level is like a life goal to them. An example of a system that lasted well over a decade is the Xavix (X-Port), the games were not trying to compare with other videogame consoles but it was a fitness console, much like what the Wii became to be. 1

OCAT
MindLink? Is that the thing that Vulcans do to get your password for the Enterprise? (EDIT: I just found out it was a real thing in 1984, cancelled because of hurting eyebrows) Maybe that hand greeting thing they do is just the future Atari Logo o.o-3 Live long, and eat Tacos... I forgot, is the VCS going to have USB ports to connect a Keyboard and Mouse? or is a USB hub needed to get more ports? And if so, does that mean you can attach more than 4 Atari controllers by using a USB hub like the NES Tap? You know, I thought about it, when Hewlett Packard reinvented itself, I really DigDug the Logo, it was modern and minimalistic,(plus it looks like a robot is giving you the up and down Finger) perhaps Atari might think about that... OCAT
Anyone else bothered by the fact that there are no leaks whatsoever? You would think for a high profile new gaming system and all those prototypes being made one person would have snapped a picture of the thing booting up or at least the complete game system in the shipping box ready to go. This in and of itself disturbes me, sometimes you dont look what is there, but what is missing to get clues.
