RetroN 77

Recommended Posts

I noticed companies are not doing a lot of April Fool's jokes. Not like they were 10 years ago.

Unconfirmed, heresay, he-said-his-buddy-said kinda thing - AF jokes on web pages tend to piss people off more than being fun and amusing. And then there's liability. Gotta be careful what's said.

If a company is dumb enough to make an April Fool joke on a long awaited product, kidding on specs, it will just instantly kill the business and loose reputation.

Haven't they posted other jokes that later became real products?

I think this one is real enough. It's certainly plausible. I wish it looked better.

Here is the joke. I suspect some people here would actually prefer it ...

2 things make the Retron 77 less than ideal. Firstly, it looks like it has a wired controller. Unless it has a 10ft cord, I still won't be able to sit back on my couch while playing it on my hdtv. I'll have to huddle on the end of my foot stool several feet closer to my tv. Not comfy. I also don't know if I'll be able to play my homebrews on it. I only have Super Cobra Arcade and Draconian so far but I will be getting more in the future. From what I've seen, the Polymega has a wireless controller and will be able to play homebrews, so if that ever comes out and they eventually release the promised Atari module, that system would be my preferred choice to play my Atari games on my hdtv. But if there is a wireless controller option and the Retron 77 can play most homebrews, I'm in.

It's been 40 years since the release of the 2600. Surely you have extension cables on hand by now.

Indeed. Extensions are everywhere, PolyMega is iffy at best.

Retron77 is real. The other looks like some sort of Easter Fool's joke.

BTW I signed up for preorder notifications. I'll keep you posted.

Nowhere. So that is the big question. Will it run new homebrews?

Only the ones without ARM coprocessors, undocumented opcodes, or otherwise "exotic" bankswitch routines. If it gets Pitfall II running properly, that will be an accomplishment.

Feel free to daisy chain several of them together if you need extra length. When I was testing cigar box joysticks, I chained 10 cables together to test them for defects, and my "60 foot" cord worked like a charm.

I doubt seriously those will work. They require minimum bus level cart access, which the Atari vcs, 2600, 2600 jr, and 7800 have, or barring direct bus access, a nightly build of Stella 5.x to run the new cdw kernel or whatever its called now.

For all intents and purposes, Polymega is vapourware, along with Lythium and Ataribox. They will never live up to the legacy of Retrovcs though... :rolling:

Assuming this is real, if it is going to run some home brews and have some of the more difficult games like Pitfall 2 running... we still have the Stella issue.....

Never say never. Polymega are still responding to posts on their site's forum and state they are still hard at work to get their product to market.

Indeed. Simple as that.

Really? Last I looked there the posts seemed to be saying the opposite.. i.e. radio silence for many moons now.

I supposed cross talk about vaporware consoles or half baked crap is to be expected, but we do have a thread for the Polymega.

If Hyperkin is really releasing this, I want to know if they learned anything and what the issue is with Stella. What Stella are they using? If if the start making claims of 100% compatibility, how did they get around the technical issues with using the old version of Stella? Don't need to know details, and I don't know if there is a steaming pile around the bend, but the skid marks from the Retron 5 are still there.

Why do you say that?

Its a nice way of saying theyve shown nothing for a year and a half, have brushed off any effort to communicate with their market, and are following the Coleco Chameleon playbook to a T.

Call me Mr. Naive and perhaps I haven't been in the retro gaming scene long enough but I think I'll stick with my hopeful optimism rather than subscribe to your jaded cynicism. At least for now. I hope I never have reason to change.

Do you have any idea what the Coleco Chameleon was? Or the RetroEngine Sigma? Or the Oton X?
