Round thing on RCA cables?

Recommended Posts

On a couple RCA cables I got w/ my8-bit(s), there's a round, about 1-inch diameter black thing about 3-4 inches from one end. It says "Chelco" (obviously the maker) & says "this end to computer". It's attached to the cable w/ a Philips head screw. Is it some sort of surge protection or what?

Do not remove that thing under penalty of law! 033102luf_1_prv.gif

I believe that is a toroid coil to reduce interference in the RF signal.

Ah, OK...

There's a similar thing on my Sony PS/PS2 controller cables, not round but cylindrical, & weighty. What's that?

Same thing....

Cable wound round or passed through a fixed magnet to eliminate potential RF noise. USB and many more PC type cables often feature one too...

Yep, they come in several varieties, but basically a ferrite rod, bead or donut is used to turn a small section of the wire into a very low value inductor. This reduces the ability of the wire to act as an RF broadcast antenna.
