Atari 2600 Battle of the Planets

Recommended Posts

Just something I always lusted after as a kid. I know it never existed. One of my friends knew I wanted this game so bad that he would tease me that he bought it in china town (I grew up in New York,) but he would never let me see it. It was a long running torture. We even once came to blows over it. Anyway, after seeing transformers & knight rider, & etc. mentioned, I felt it time for me to finally get it off my chest. If any coders are serious I still have my 'design documents' (lol) from when I was a kid :-)

The game would of course have seven-zark-seven and the dog robot giving mission orders and such :-) I want this based on the authentic period Battle of the Planets, not any of the later stuff.

I bought a Battle of the Planets DVD a couple years back and found that the show aged pretty well. It was still entertaining to watch + interesting to see all of the different variations of the show. The weirdest change was the american version of Keyop. In the original japanese cartoon, he spoke intelligently; but in Battle of the Planets they portrayed him as a chirping buffoon. What a strange thing to do.

I still have all the old Gold Key Battle of the Planets comics. They aged pretty well too.

This show was HUGE at my elementary school. I remember arguments over who played Jason. This show was probably my first exposure to anime.

Not a comic reader myself, but I did go out and buy the new Battle of the Planets comic book series that's out right now. Good story - well written... Had to pick it up after watching Battle of the Planets on the Rhino DVD's.

You might want to check those out.

IMO, It' sounds pretty interesting. I'm not a big fan of comics myself, but It's a great idea to possibly get this idea working!

Moisture...must have moisture :)

I loved the Lost in Space show and I think it could have made a decent game for the Atari 2600.

The great thing about the DVD's is they have the episodes in their original Gatchaman format.

G-Force was an okay attempt to blend both BOTP and Gatchaman. I'd love to see a game like this for the 2600. It would probably be a shooter with the Phoenix and the ability to go into Firebird mode.

I agree, this COULD work as a 2600 title.

BTW, the robot dog was "1-Rover-1" - not that I was much of a BOTP fan, honest!

Why not a "Thundercats" for the 2600? What could be cooler? Don't you all wish that when Lion-O 'called' the cats, that the pupils of your eyes would turn to slits & you'd 'hear' the call?

Mee-OWWW! :D

thunder.. Thunder.. THUNDERCATS, HO-OHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Does that answer your question? :D

I wish I had a better handle on when the episodes were on Cartoon Network. For a time they were late night Toonami but that's all Adult Swim now.

May be worth noting that Gatchaman has already been turned into its own PS1 game in Japan, and "guest starred" in another:

Gatchaman: The Shooting

Tatsunoko Fight

You may want to look at what was done in those games. The former is my favorite, and its in-play graphics aren't really that elaborate. It should be do-able.

While I'm all for a homebrew BOTP game, it may be worth noting that there's a current frenzy of licensing activity surrounding the soon-to-be-resurrected BOTP property and the 30th anniversary of Gatchaman. It may be worth laying low for a bit.

yea, I already own Gatchaman: The Shooting. Any idea where I can get the fighting one?

my original game idea was a large all direction scrolling map that the phoenix traversed, doing shootery things. there were areas on the map where the tunnels were too small for the phoenix, and your character(s) would get out (the tunnel size would determin whether your got out in person or in vehicle,) the game screen wouldn't change here, either, same map. in person you'd go through a rudimentary beat em up, in vehicle, it would be either a shoot em up or moon patrol type thing, as you try to collect the spectra agent who knows how to direct you to whatever spectra critter you need to fight to finish the level.

the maze would have several several areas, equally distributed between on foot , and vehicle. only one (random,) would have the spectra agent that takes you out of this part of the game. the rest would have a spectra agent that points you in the -general- direction of the correct one (so concievably, you could finish this level on your first trip out of the ship, or on your eighth (each level has 8 out of ship areas,) once you get the right agent, the exit to the maze opens and you can fly out to a horizontal shooter that leads to the boss/mission goal (replete with power ups,)

(examples: boss has kidnapped someone, fight boss to free them, boss is heading to destroy somewhere and theres nothing between the boss and his goal but you (ie 2600 empire, but with only one at-at, and winnable.) boss is about to launch a nasty weapon and must be destroyed before he can fire it, boss is immune to you, but must be driven into some evironmental effect that does hurt him to defeeat him, etc.) of course the fiery phoenix would be available as a last resort :-) (complete with jiddery cut scene of the g-force team gritting their teeth through the intense heat) :)

The maze would be randomly generated from small non-random segments, as would its color scheme. The shooter would be random too, and the difficulty would constantly ramp (faster, more enemies (in the mazes and in the shooter,)) and there would be two play modes, one where you keep playing forever, and one where after 10 levels you face Zoltar himself in a ship and can win the game.

In between missions, 7-zark-7 and 1-rover-1 would provide cheesy/humorous on-screen text banter slightly relating to the next mission (they would also pop up once you found the right spectre agent, letting you know it was time to go find the mission goal,) and of course congratulate you in the end (along with anderson,)

I posted these in the clip art thread, and then remembered this thread :-) I made some mock ups of a 2600 battle of the planets cartridge.

I notice that you made sure to include two upskirt pictures of Princess. Nice touch.

Remember kids, you can't have sex with a woman made of celluloid and paint. Believe me, I've tried.

Just a note about the american version of Keyop. He was turned into a chirping buffoon because it was the only way they could censor his "adult" dialog.
