DaveD #2 Posted July 19, 2017 I think the first game I played that featured the “snake grows when it eats stuff” mechanic was Surround on the 2600. Later Snake Byte on the Apple II became a small addiction for me. The light cycle stage in Tron also uses the same basic gameplay. I think Nibbler is a much more polished presentation. The graphics are bolder, brighter, and more colorful. The gameplay is very simple and straight forward with nothing to clutter up the basic mechanic. The different mazes gradually ramp up in difficulty and provide good incentive to keep playing and see what comes next. Having said that, I think I prefer Jungler. Jungler has a slightly larger maze with pitfalls and prizes to collect. It feels like the kind of maze you’d need to explore vs just getting through. Plus the addition of the enemy snakes adds a layer of strategy to the genre that Nibbler just doesn’t have. With the added fire button, Jungler’s controls are a little more complex but still simplistic. Clearing a maze in Jungler feels like more of an accomplishment vs just eating your way through Nibbler. What’s your favorite?
Cynicaster #3 Posted July 19, 2017 I like both games, but I'd give the edge to Jungler. There's just more depth to it. Nibbler is too much of a memorization game to have lasting interest for me.
koolmoecraig #4 Posted September 11, 2017 Agreed about Jungler. Now if I could just get the sound on my PCB working...
