Just got 800XL with memory upgrade

Recommended Posts

I just recieved an 800xl off eBay. The dos disk it came with loaded a ram disk, which I thought was odd. I opened it up and found this memory upgrade inside. It's pretty clear this is some kind of 256k upgrade for the 800xl. (Akthought the Google doesn't seem to find much about it... Anyone have any information in this one?) Is there software out there that can tell what kind of memory mod a computer has without opening it?

Is there software to test these larger memory mods to make sure they still work?

Thanks.

Ooh, I love surprises like this. Bough a 400 off eBay 15 years ago when I finally got around to opening it up I saw it had a 48K upgrade in it. :)

So yeah, back to this mod ... markings on the board "KC ACE XL 256" - I wonder if this was a small-run device produced for some folks in, say the "Kansas City Atari Computer Ethusiasts" or something? Someone like Claus B. could probalby look at the board and tell you exactly what kind of expansion it is (e.g., Rambo, Compyshop, etc) based on the wiring to the PIA and how the expansion is put together.

As for memory testers, search the 8-bit forum for XRAM. Someone recently posted a copy of in another thread.

Looks similar to the Wizztronics 256K Upgrade Board, but much smaller footprint. Interesting find!!!
