Gamecube AV cable - which one?

I'm currently using a cheap S-VHS cable from my GC to my TV (which, sadly, doesn't support component input, though it is quite a kick-ass TV (Sony WEGA)).

The picture, I think, could be better. Thing is, I've looked around and I can't really find any decent leads (especially as, here in the UK, the PAL GC doesn't support S-VHS anyway - I have a US NTSC model, by the way).

I've heard the Monster cable is pretty good (although not available in this country - swines) but, well, is it? What are you guys using?

I actually swap the video cable back and forth from my N64 to Cube. They have the same video in and RCA out on the back, so why not? Besides which I can plug directly into the second output on the front of my TV that way. No hassling around needed, especially now that I have a switchbox. (Okay so it seems funny to hit the switch marked Cube when I'm playing N64, but they're both Nintendos so I live with it.)

That's strange, because any s-video cable should look great. S-video hookups are kind of ironic because the highest frequency content will be less than 4mhz and you can actually use worse cables than you can for RF.

interesting. So might a 'high grade' S-VHS cable make no difference?

I've also the choice of an RBG SCART cable (you don't have these in US), anyone here use one? That seems the quality standard for PAL GCs but I wonder if it'll work with a US model.

I personally think Monster Cable is a ripoff, although I do have a few myself when I've needed certain types of cables in a pinch (for instance, before component cables were common, I needed a set and could only find ones by Monster locally). Generally the picture using s-video input should be pretty damn good, and I really can't really tell the difference between that and component inputs (and I have tried both component and s-video with my PS2).

Yeah, I agree, 98% of the time Monster cable is nothing but hype.

The S-VHS cable I have makes my TV look as crystal clear as a VGA monitor (albeit lo-res VGA). You can't get any better than that unless you go to Digital TV.

BTW, You can also use the Same Cube S-Video cable on a SNES, and all 3 (SNES/N64/Cube) have the same A/V Output.

Odd thing, when I plug this S-VHS cable into my N64, I just get VERY washed out colors. wierd.[/i]

Just out of curiosity, what brand is that cable that you're using? I'm using a cheapo Pelican cable that I bought for $3 on clearance, and it works great on my Wega. However, something tells me not to be surprised if you're using the same one.

Oooo Pelican bad I used some Pelican S Video cables and strangely enough they all failed at some point. I also noticed the colors weren't as crisp as they should be. Those 3 in 1 cables aren't too great either - ya know the ones for PS, DC,N64 or for all the newer systems etc.. I do have Monster cables and they are just overpriced. I only got em because the place was going outta business and they were cheap. Nintendo used to have S Video cables on their site, don't know if they still do.

there is a shitload of markup on cables of any brand. if you have any connections, try to get them at or near cost, youll be amazed at how cheap they turn out to be

I don't understand why people buy the third-party stuff? Cables, savecards, controllers..... most times they are complete crap.

 

I bought the official Sony/Nintendo S-Video cables. I figure they know more about their system than anyone else. And they work beautifully.

Sonys cables are good (if MASSIVELY overpriced). As for Nintendo, their official SCART lead doesn't have seperate audio connections (so I couldn't use my amp) and, as the Euro GC doesn't support S-VHS, you can't buy an official S-VHS lead for GC here.

Hmm, cool, I didn't know there was an official GC s-vhs lead at all, how much are they? I might ask one of you good US citizens a favor soon

I'm using a 4-system bastard I rebuilt. It supports Saturn, SNES-N64-GCN, PSX-PS2, and Dreamcast, I think.
