+toddtmw #1 Posted August 4, 2017 I have an APE face and an APE SIO2PC. Each one has only one SIO port. Can I create a cable where I take three SIO ends and wire all three of each wire together to plug them both in? Or does there have to be some "hardware" to handle that? Thanks. -Todd

Brentarian #6 Posted August 4, 2017 Tying the cables together will work, but the method Bill linked to is much cleaner. I saw Bill's ApeLink at VCFSE this year and it is definitely a useful device.

Kyle22 #8 Posted August 5, 2017 IIRC, some models of Apeface have an SIO port in them. It may be worthwhile to open the device and see if it has solder pads for the extra SIO connector.

Gunstar #10 Posted August 6, 2017 (edited) I have been using the APElink for about a decade, set up as a four way with two male SIO ports and two female cables. I highly recomend it. But yes, with daisy-chained smart peripherals, the SIO line itself can be spliced as much as you want, and it is actually better than a straight daisy-chain and many feet of resistance. Kyle22 #11 Posted August 6, 2017 Hello Kyle Check out the picture in the link Brentarian posted. It should answer your question. Sincerely Mathy I don't see that Brentarian posted any links. The only link I saw was posted by Bill Lange to Best Electronics about the ApeLINK, not the ApeFACE printer interface that I mentioned.

Have you ever had any power issues with multiple SIO powered devices connected at the same time?
panama800 #13 Posted August 6, 2017 I ordered a Apelink from brad at best yesterday. I really like Best Electronics. There service is second to none. Plus I spend way to much money there, lol.
+DrVenkman #14 Posted August 6, 2017 Have you ever had any power issues with multiple SIO powered devices connected at the same time? In my case, when I have my P:R:Connection hooked up and then my SIO2USB device plugged into that, powering up my U1MB- and UAV-equipped 800XL usually gives me a solid yellow screen. A press of System Reset and it boots up as normal. Just the SIO2USB, or just the P:R:Connection, or just 1050 disk drive(s), and it's fine. *shrug*
a8isa1 #15 Posted August 6, 2017 (edited) Hate those dead-end devices. Here I made my barebones SDrive (no buttons, no LEDs) from an ApeLink kit. It may look good on the outside but don't let that fool you. The inside is very ugly. [Edit] P.S. The SD socket at one end means there are only two SIO ports on my device but they are both available for use. Edited August 6, 2017 by a8isa1

1050 #17 Posted August 7, 2017 No hardware needed, AIM published a how to way back when we were still going to Atari club meetings and you joined two SIO cables together by splicing same color wire together starting one foot from two ends with staggered and taped solder connections. The two short ends worked perfect for a drive stack and the very long one then went to the printer. Two open sockets just that easy. No device is supposed to draw a significant amount of power from the SIO cable, the wire itself at 21 gauge or smaller can't handle it anyway. 5V READY line is used at logic level amperage only. I said easy, it's not. It's certainly an entire evening with solder smoke in the eyes and you will be very glad it's all over hours later. Hooking it up and using it is the easy part. Gunstar #18 Posted August 7, 2017 (edited) Have you ever had any power issues with multiple SIO powered devices connected at the same time? No. Currently, just through the SIO only with APElink the first in the daisy-chain, I have 2 1050's, SIO2PC, 10502PC,1010, 1020, 1030 and Supra microprint interface with Panasonic dot-matirix printer all connected and often all powered (those that require more than inline 5v, like the printer interface and SIO2PC/10502PC). And have never yet encountered any power issues, or any issues. Some devices are directly connected to the APElink, and some are daisy-chained through other devices. Brentarian #19 Posted August 7, 2017 Todd, I opened my ApeFace that I've never used (yellow silk-screened version with ribbon Centronics cable) and it has a lot of room inside where you could connect multiple SIO cables and hide the mess inside -- just solder/crimp and drill a few holes for the extra cables.
