+madman #3 Posted August 20, 2017 They are pretty basic 7400 series logic chips. The 7404 is a hex inverter. It does what you'd imagine an inverter does. The 7414 is a hex inverting Schmitt trigger. Plenty of pages that explain what a Schmitt trigger is. I assume it is used with the ABC and L/R buttons to clean up any bouncing issues. Though it's been a LONG time since I've dealt w/ this kind of hardware so I could be talking out my rear end without following the traces on those photos. Zerosquare #4 Posted August 20, 2017 Nah, they're not using for debouncing (most games scan the controllers only once per frame, so every 16.7 or 20 ms ; that's slow enough not to require debouncing). They're just used as buffers. The standard controller uses a single 74HC244 chip for this. I'm not sure why they used two chips for the Pro controller (it's a better design, but also more expensive, and Atari was known to be penny-pinching). MayDay #5 Posted August 26, 2017 The two chips are pretty inexpensive and readily available. If I understand the documentation, they are really just to remove noise from the signal. Particularly useful when reading switches, or in this case buttons. They wouldn't have any programming on them other than the predefined circuits, correct? (I appreciate we would be missing the keypad buttons) Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk Update: It looks like that converter might only be to allow a Jag controller to be used with Windows or Linux and not for a USB controller to be used with the Jag.
