Atari Jaguar Pro Controller

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have hi-res photos they can share of the boards or know where I can find them? Would like to see both sides without the pads in place if possible. I searched google for a bit, but the photos I found are all obscured in one way or another.

If anyone else was interested, I finally found some here on AA- see post #150 here.

Does anyone know what the two chips in line at the beginning are for?

They are pretty basic 7400 series logic chips. The 7404 is a hex inverter. It does what you'd imagine an inverter does. The 7414 is a hex inverting Schmitt trigger. Plenty of pages that explain what a Schmitt trigger is. I assume it is used with the ABC and L/R buttons to clean up any bouncing issues. Though it's been a LONG time since I've dealt w/ this kind of hardware so I could be talking out my rear end without following the traces on those photos.

Nah, they're not using for debouncing (most games scan the controllers only once per frame, so every 16.7 or 20 ms ; that's slow enough not to require debouncing). They're just used as buffers. The standard controller uses a single 74HC244 chip for this. I'm not sure why they used two chips for the Pro controller (it's a better design, but also more expensive, and Atari was known to be penny-pinching).

The two chips are pretty inexpensive and readily available. If I understand the documentation, they are really just to remove noise from the signal. Particularly useful when reading switches, or in this case buttons. They wouldn't have any programming on them other than the predefined circuits, correct? In other words, I could just order some and put them in line without issue?

People get pretty silly for sealed video games and accessories.

In this case, it is a good and limited accessory though. Still.. those prices.

I love that after paying £1200 you still get to pay £10 for delivery.

Everything retro gaming has exploded over the last several years. Jag included.

There's no indication it sold for that price. I can put my Jag Pro controller up for $2,000 and end it without a sale. Will someone start a thread about that and talk about how that's now the going price?

Given the unrealistically high price for a Pro controller I was about to ask of there was a Jag to USB converter and then I found this:

http://www.raphnet.net/electronique/jaguar_usb/index_en.php

Has anyone used one to connect something like an 8Bitdo NES style controller to the Jag? (I appreciate we would be missing the keypad buttons)

Update:

It looks like that converter might only be to allow a Jag controller to be used with Windows or Linux and not for a USB controller to be used with the Jag.

That adapter allows you to use a Jag controller on a computer. Not sure why you'd think that allows a USB controller to be used on the Jag.

Wishful thinking ;-)

I think I was already clinic when I picked Jag as my main console for collecting. Bless nostalgia and the love of quirky things, at least diving back into this system has been fun, even if it's rough to explain "Why Jaguar?"

I wonder that this hasn`t popped up here yet but apparently new Pro Controllers will be made according to a post on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AtariJaguar64/posts/1848381541855819

If this is true and they are of good qualtiy (the information is still a little sparse) then this is really good news.

I saw this post too and I'm definitely interested in a pair if the quality matches the original Atari controllers. Hopefully they can provide detailed information soon. I imagine that they can sell at least a few hundred at that price point.

Hmmm. If this comes to fruition, I'll be interested in it, but I am skeptical.
