Is Doom+ Dead ?

I'd be up for seeing heretic rereleased, but for the sheer volume of platforms to play Doom on, I wouldn't see any reason on waiting for Doom+ on Jaguar... you can probably get it all on PC

Yeah... I kind of agree.

There's a lot of cool games I'd like to see on the Jaguar, but more doom games isn't really a big deal for me.

Now, if they did Spear of Destiny (Wolf 3D sequal), I'd be all in for that... or even if they did the other levels for Wolf 3D, that would be awesome...

You guys don't get it, of course i know about zdoom, i'm not that old :P

You can also play Atari st games on emulator but playing it on Jaguar brings an other perspective and is just cool.

Also, Ahem, death to Zdoom, Chocolate Doom for life. Ahem. :) Prboom+/Glboom+ Is also acceptable, Doomsday Engine for Nicities, DelphiDoom for 32 bit software rendering(opengl is kinda gross on old games). Zandronum for online. I Doom often you know...

But Jag Doom is my first love.

Can we make this the "which Doom port is best and why" thread? I don't know all the varieties but I'm open to learning under your tutelage.

Chocolate Doom is the best because it's my favourite (i like doom like it was on Dos)

If i want modern stuff i play DOOM 2016, the best FPS of this gen(also subjective).

Zdoom is fine but it's mostly for mods and TCs. I can't see myself go through IWADs with it.

I thought you were being sarcastic. Hmm

It's hard to give advice about ports since there many for all tastes and a new one each month or so.

I stick with chocolate doom also because i can use it easily with a game pad and it's simplicity doesn't require ODC-me to spend hours in the config menus.

Jaguar Doom was my 1st love and what a love it was..

But personally, if i want an improved console version, i will plump for the PS1 version everything.

Improved visuals are nice, but it's the music that creates so many extra layers of atmosphere.

I was never a fan of the music in PC Doom, so i prefer the ambience of the Jaguar version to that and the 32X versions, but PS1 Doom music is my kinda f&&ked up.

Could Heretic actually be released?

It's a total conversion is it not?

Kinda thought that was frowned apon by I.D but i could well be wrong.

I don't follow Jag homebrew as such...despite what some morons seem to think..

I love Ps1 Doom a lot too mainly because music(don't really care for Midi either) and light effects(own 2 copies + Final Doom) but i prefer the original gun sounds and demon screams.

The original baron's scream was the embodyment of fear to 12 year old me.

Heh, I can see how that might come across that way. As salty as I can sometimes get, I do appreciate the opinions of others around here, except when it's "waah waah cartridges forever and I hate downloads."

I didn't know anything about Chocolate Doom but I will definitely check it out.

There's a Jaguar Doom for PC too, right? Not that I'd want to limit myself in that way.

Not the best console port ...that has indeed been well covered ...but the best source port to PC? New territory I think. Not that I'm going to search for it, not until I've tried Chocolate Doom.

Source port thread, then no. I personally prefer ZDoom/GZDoom. Haven't used Chocolate Doom, but I have used PR Boom+ (almost a necessity for certain mods) and it's not as flush with options, isn't as flexible with managing saves and the mouse movement feels awful to me.

I can't stand how pistol clips/guns bounce from the dying enemy in Zdoom. The decals on walls feel awkward if you don't use vertical mouse view/or shotgun since they all end up on the same line.

Chocolate Doom is for authenticity and sometimes feel mre accurate than DosBox. Prboom+ I close but with more limit removals(choco has some)

Zdoom is sometimes needed when the Wad uses advanced script etc...

If you want fast mouseplay then yes Zdoom is better.

If you want to reexperience Doom, Doom 2, Final Doom then Doomsday engine is something to try.

Doomsday engine and GzDoom both feature ambient occlusion which is nice to remove the flattness of low old map under Opengl.

You can also use High resolution texture packs, some are nice but it sometimes removes the authenticity of the game's look.

There are also 3D models but they don't look very nice and the animations are rigid.

Music packs are also a thing to try if you don't like Midi. Some remade soundtracks are nice.

I personaly use VirtualMIDISynth http://coolsoft.altervista.org/en/virtualmidisynth

It's a nice way to replace windows midi instruments if you don't like the way they sound. If you do so you have to find complete soundfonts ".sf2" files that you have to decompress from other file types with specialised decompressors...

The soundfonts have to feature evry needed instruments or you will have crashes.

Some people like Brutal Doom/Project Brutality as a way to play it.

I personally don't like it as it adds iron sights and reloads.

I only play these things in multiplayer.

EDIT: Thanks Flomojo about the the Jaguar port on Pc (Calico Doom) I didn't know about it.

So your go to is Chocolate but you use Zandronum for online? As an Odamex dev I hope that you at least know about our engine considering all of the engines you were able to list. You aren't going to find a client/server online engine closer to the oldschool experience than ours. They used it for the Doom 20th anniversary tournament at Quakecon 2013. Check my sig. Alright... that's enough of that. I'm just glad Doom is so active still. I don't really care what source port people use to play it. Well as long as they aren't trying to pass off Brutal Doom as oldschool Doom. That's just wrong.

I don't play online often and Odamex as good as it is, is usually empty when i join in. It's more of an event based comunity if i recall corectly. I play online Doom at random for short periods, i also don't communicate with other fans so...

I heard Odamex was the base of ps3 classic Doom port. Is it true?

I ported it to original Xbox as mentioned in my sig. It's a supported platform in our codebase so the code can be browsed in our source control repository. Everything works including a launcher to join multiplayer games. I have debug kits which I used to develop the port.

I ported it to the Wii as well but it isn't complete and so hasn't been released yet. It also can be built from our repository. Single player works just fine with a classic controller or gamecube controller. Wiimote doesn't work right yet. You can turn with the wiimote but it stops after a certain point so it's not really usable. The network connection also doesn't work yet. Midi music does.

I could port it to PS3 if I had a modded console. I am not aware of anyone else having done it though.

When it comes to getting a game there are sporadic matches happening a lot more frequently. The best way to get a game is to pop into #odamex on quakenet. There is also a discord but we did not set it up and we have no control there. I'm not sure any of the devs even frequent it.
