Connecting old systems like 2600 to modern TVs?

I have this but does not work on my NES. Only worked on my old bluray. Get a VCR instead. Hook it up to the tv and then the nes to that. Not sure about 2600 but my 4k samsing tv has a shared component/rca jack. And 2600 looks great in 4k. Just hook in to my rf on back of tv, And another old tc box with a game port, Or phono torf adapter.

Ok so most modern TVs no longer accept an analog signal. Is there some kind of converter box that will convert an old RF analog signal to HDMI inputs?

There must be some doing that here as I doubt everyone has access to old CRTs (or maybe they do?)

The problem isn't' analog RF, almost all tvs can tune analog (even with a digital tuner) - but you may need to change a menu option.

The real problem is most modern tvs won't do 240p.

It's either use a crt or video moded console with an upscaler to use on a modern tv.

Search how the framemeister works.

I don't know too many modern TV's that don't have RCA inputs, and the best/cheapest way to "upscale" to composite is a VCR. $10-$20 on Ebay, a bit more if you want a better one. You're basically just paying for the RF demodulator. Better VCR's have better ones, because that was one way they achieved the better picture quality they advertised.

No need to upscale to HDMI; you won't get any better quality given an RF source. Something, somewhere is going to have to do a conversion from RF to a format your TV understands. Whether it's the TV or a separate device, you have no way of even knowing in advance if one or the other will do a better job. A VCR's just demodulating the RF signal and then giving it to the TV to convert. That's as good a chance as any of giving you the best quality you're going to get.

I modded my 2600 and my 7800 to use composite. The 7800 looks fine with a cheap mod board, but I used the same mod on my 2600 and it doesn't look good at all. I have an unmodded 2600 Jr. and the RF on it works perfect with all my TVs, except my Vizio Smart TV. It has issues with a few 2600 games on modded and unmodded systems. I tried using a VCR as a go between with the smart TV and it still has issues with the same few games. A member here is helping me out by sending me a different mod to try in my 2600, so hopefully it will improve the picture quality. There are tons of threads on here about the different mods and how to do them. There are also people who will do them for a fee and of course google and youtube have plenty of information. :)

As far as TVs go, most old school games do have CRTs. Not all, but most. I find that new TVs generally work just fine, with the exception of my Stupid Smart TV. :P

Order this and hooking up to the cable input on any smart tv is super simple.

What you linked to isn't the correct adapter.

This is- http://www.ebay.com/itm/10x-Atari-2600-7800-TV-RF-adapter-adaptor-COLECO-INTELLIVISION-NES-Coaxial-/162525476351?hash=item25d745f5ff:g:q6AAAOSwImRYLfQk

That still doesn't mean that "smart" TVs will work with every game.

Some games just don't work on my Vizio Smart TV. It doesn't matter how the system is connected. My 2600 and my 7800 are modded with composite and my Junior is still RF. The games that don't work, don't work on all 3 systems when connected to my "smart" TV, but work fine on every other TV I own, LED, LCD, and CRT.

Yes that is correct. But the other one he linked would work on a 2600 JR since there is no rf cable included.

My 2600 Jr came with the RF cable (as I'm sure they all did when they were new), but I see what you're saying. Most people are probably going to have the cable, in which case, the adapter he linked to won't be the one they want. Also, he never specified it was for a Jr, which might confuse someone who had a regular 2600. :)

Thanks. I heard somewhere that HDTVs didn't work with old analog RF. It seems some do and I should have just tried it.

I have a 2600 Jr. and it does work. The image is a bit noisy (solid colors with slight bands, edges of high contrast areas have a bit of bleeding etc. I guess that is probably just the nature of old non broadcast quality RF.

My Jr works great and it's RF. I use one of those adapters instead of an RF switch box and the picture is great. If you are still using a switch box, toss it and get one of the adapters.

And a good switch box does make all the difference. I have verified that. The above even works on my nes and gives better picture than my original nes automatic switch box. Was also considering one of these. Looks a lot nicer than the other tiny box I have.

Yea, If a person is going to use a switch, the old slide ones are pretty bad.

Talked about it some here:

https://atariage.com/forums/topic/266690-old-technology-needed-for-my-new-tv/

15-1265 - I got the silver version of that. Had some static, but cleaning with detoxit worked great.

15-1260 - I'll have to add that to my list.icon_biggrin.gif

Here is a list from that thread with the radio shack / Archer switch types / part numbers.

All are pretty cheap and work well.

all coax (type f) unless listed.

15-1260 - white Push buttons - black with wood sides - 3 out puts (two select-able) five inputs with one RCA

15-1261 - same as 15-1265 but wood grain and bigger knobs

15-1262 - like 1261, but three out

15-1263 - powered 4 * 4 composite video + stereo ( not coax, but listed for info)

15-1264 - three out - no rca in - amplified

15-1265 - silver - five in - two out. one connector in a rca

15-1266 - Black push button - two out - five in - no rca

15-1267 - NES / sega automatic switch

15-1268 - OLD school atari style slide rf swtich - both 75ohm and 300 connectors

15-1269 - another old school rf switch - 300 ohm connectors only

15-2100 - black push button three out - no rca - amplified

Here is another two to add to your list.

Thanks, I was mostly just playing around making a radio shack list. icon_wink.gif

But If I had one like the second link (the zenith) when I was small kid, I would have broken it due to playing with it constantly.

If that dosen't look like spaceship controls to a toddler, I don't know what does.icon_razz.gif

At first picture was horrible. But after playing around with the wires for a bit it looks awesome now. Crystal clear. 2600 looks great. Even works on NES Nintendo. Top loader has faint lines (jail bar) up and down. But other wise crystal clear. Will probably do genesis and others also.
