Looking at the images, there doesn't seem to be any color ('colour' for those across the Atlantic ) or difficulty switches on the handheld, nor is there a PAL/NTSC selection option (PAL only?). We'll have to wait and see what the game compatibility is like if SD cards are supported and if all the proper switches are present on the final model before judgment is cast though. I mean come on. these days I wont even consider anything with less than a 5' screen and even then I prefer at least a 7' screen. That all said though they really do not seem to be offering anything we do not already have or can do better and cheaper. Theres a TV game version (single joystick) with the same lineup. I believe this is official Atari merchandise. The same people who are bringing us the stupid Speaker Hat. I don't want that weird analog input device, I want a standard D-Pad. It appears there's no place to insert a SD memory card, unless it's under the battery cover. Is the hardware just system on a chip? If so then how is it better than the Flashback Portable? They advertise a lot, they seem to know what theyre selling, and they have it all in one place. Not getting a porny vibe from it. In all seriousness though I didn't get a porn vibe either but it does look on the outside pretty nicely done, but how it runs is what matters. Sounds like a legit name for a bootleg gaming device. Brownie points if it gets a rooster on the menu screen. Because I gotta ask, this device has no relation to Atgames or Ataribox, correct? Seems Atari is really whoring their brand out. Many similar games to the AtGames stuff minus the Activision and Namco licensing. Kind of like what we are looking at here, but even more themed. Maybe even enough themed to start sacrificing function! YEAH! Like high-heels of handhelds! Ok, not really, but there are tons of cases of aesthetics over function, so it would be ok. Now that I have seen this one, I can think of other stuff that might make it look even more Atari-ish. Looks better than the flashback, but if it cant play the same amount of games then hard to get excited about. Also think that if you are going to add a TV out at this point, it better be HDMI. TheCravenBarley Posted September 5, 2017 Share Posted September 5, 2017 The Atari Retro Handheld can be pre-ordered and will be released in November, so I would believe that the images represent the final product, and since the description does not list an SD card slot, it is unlikely that there is one located on this unit. Funstock Retro carries a wide range of retro gaming systems including the Atari Flashback consoles and portables, and I second what Flojomojo said in an earlier post. It would be nice to have a distributor like that in the United States. The listing does not include the name of the company producing the Atari Retro Handheld, and I have not read a press release from Atari, so I do not think it's a gaming console directly put out by them like the Ataribox. The only thing I have to think is that Atari licensed the name to a new company, but it's strange that the companies name is not listed anywhere. I am a huge fan of Atari, and have the first generation Atari Flashback Portable, which I really enjoy. I now have the Atari Flashback 8 Gold on reserve at Gamestop for the 9/22 release. While researching the new Atari Retro Handheld, I noticed something interesting on the Atari website. I am almost certain, they previously had the Atari Flashback consoles by AtGames listed on their website, and today, I could not find the Flashback consoles or portables listed anywhere on the Atari website. I purchased the Atari Flashback Portable, because it appeared that Atari did not just license out the name, but also endorsed the portables as more of an Atari console rather than just an AtGames console. Now that I do not see the consoles listed on the site, I am wondering what the relationship with AtGames is going to be in the future. With the news on the Ataribox, I would have thought this means Atari is moving all consoles in house, but then the Atari Retro pops up out of no where in the UK. I hope Atari does not continue licensing the name out to other companies, and brings all future consoles in house, selling them as official Atari consoles. Atari chose to license the rights to a similar product to another company for the European product.
