Is the 3DO worth getting?

Recommended Posts

Slam n' Jam 95 was good at the time but the best player vs. player game on the 3do is Battlesport hands down. The game is best described as ballblazer with weapons. You can upgrade your tank and weapons and there are dozens of boards and scoring configurations to play with. My friends and I had all out wars in this game. The bots are also great if you play by yourself or for practice. Best game for the system IMO.

I think you're better off with the 3DO than an Amiga cd32 ;) I almost bought a CD32 (since I owned a few amigas already I was partial to the company) almost that is untill I checked one out. The CD32 games available are almost ALL knockoffs of other amiga games with the newer AGA color palette. Since the games were ported from earlier ECS versions the extra colors don't come anywhere close to living up to thier potential, in fact some games are worse for it :( example is Pinball Fantasies.

Both machines are double spin cd-roms so yeah....slow loads ;)

some of the better 3DO titles are

- Road Rash

- Need for Speed

- FIFA Soccer

- Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo

- Return Fire (one of the best 2 player games you'll *ever* play! seriously)

- Return Fire Maps o Death

- Wing Commander 3 (best version of this game, it blows away the PC version :) )

these are all ports of mainly PC games, at the time the 3DO was outperforming the PC with a larger color palette more speed and lots of Full Motion Video (which eventually gave the system a bad name, probably deservedly so).

More games which were (I think) exclusive to the 3DO and were a LOT of fun are...

- Slam and Jam (Top notch Basketball!)

- Total Eclipse

- Gex (originally on 3DO. Later ports were made I belive)

- Crash and Burn (Came with some FZ-1's)

anyways, just my two cents, take it for what it's worth :)

Stein

yeah ;) battlesport was a huge success for 3DO but the game made me very motion sick, 3d fps don't agree with me... I've seen the game reviewed and it was one of the must haves for the system.

Battlesport is fukin GREAT, i spent many many weeks playing that game

at times the last dude was a pain in the ass and i got VERY aggrivated - but eventually became victorious

great game :)

The soccer games are fun to play against another human instead of the computer, aside from Fifa olympic soccer and some of the import soccer games are worth a shot :D

Road Rash and Need for Speed.... Need for Speed was better, but for some reason I remember liking the Sega CD version better (don't ask why?)

I've wanted to play Return Fire, dont have it.

I played Battlesport but I prefer BallBlazer over it (call me crazy ;)

I've never owned an Amiga (how strange) but the only things available

to me locally was the Atari's and old C64 (didn't care for c64 really)

the Amiga 1000 and up is one series of computers I've never owned...

Then again, the plus about the 3DO is they had a lot of games

that were to be announced for the Jaguar CD that never was...

Kinda cool to check out and see what we missed.

That brings up a question I keep forgetting to ask, so I'll ask now and get it over with.

Does 3DO the video game console = 3DO the video game company? Or are they totally different? And if they are the same, what happened?

the current 3DO video game company that is going out of business is the same compnay that had made the 3do console - when it bombed due to high prices and having money troubles during the making of the M2 - they withdrew from the console world and went stricktly to developing games on other consoles - including the PC

by the way a few M2 systems do xsist with a few games, and lots of development boards and such float around on ebay :)

You know what this means

Now that 3DO is no more for the time being, the price of 3DO consoles and games could go up on EBay.

Hopefully Not!

You figure, it was overpriced when they started selling it.

If people sell it for ridiculous amounts on EBay, it will be like overpricing the system not once, but TWICE!

I love my 3DO, second only to my Jaguar, then DC and Xbox as far as I'm concerned. Need for Speed is my all time favorite racer still (3DO version) and Road rash is good. My other favorites for the 3DO are Battlesport, Wing Commander 3 and Super Wing Commander, Space Hulk, StarFighter, Crash&Burn, Return Fire, and Shockwave 1&2. there are like 150 game titles for it (200 overall, but the other fifty are like ESPN sports tutorials and other interactive FMV crap), with about 20 excellent titles, about 50 good titles, and the rest are merely average or crap, but the titles that are good&excellent make the system rock!

- Wing Commander 3 (best version of this game, it blows away the PC version :) )
I just got this, and I have to agree. The sound is in Dolby Surround, and there is NO load time anywhere. NONE, do you hear me??? Sure, the spaceflight is a little pixelated, but the controls are snappy and responsive, and the mappings actually make sense. The designers took out some of the advanced controls (energy allocation), but that's OK since this is a cinematic, arcade-like experience. The cheesy acting really shines in this version.

I haven't played the Playstation version of WCIII in years, but I recall it chopping up more and waiting a lot for loading. And since it's not compatible with the PS2 (straight from Sony), I won't be playing that version anyway. The PC version of course has higher resolutions, but only runs at 256 colors and isn't particularly friendly to modern operating systems.

The 3DO is worth getting for WCIII and Star Control II alone! Now to find a cheap flightstick for this game ...

Bumping an old topic.  This is one of the few systems I've never owned.  I've even left it behind in thrift stores.  Is there anything on the 3do that doesn't have a superior equivalent for my Saturn?  So more precisely, if one also owns a Sega Saturn, what reasons would one have to get a 3do as well?

Road Rash, and Need For Speed are superior on the 3DO. Even Space Hulk is as well. 3DO's Star Wars Rebel Assault would be included and superior to all other console ports. I could go on.

There is a lot of mid-1990s full-motion video ephemera on 3DO, stuff that isn't anywhere else. It's not anything I'd want to buy a system to play, but if you're curious about weird old games, there's a lot of unique timewasters there. Might want to check some reviews like Videogame Critic first though. https://videogamecritic.com/3do.htm

I stand by my comments from 18 years ago a few posts up, WC3 and SC2 are neat on this system and those games aren't on Saturn. You can play the PC versions on GOG though. I sold my 3DO and the flightstick on Ebay last year, and I don't miss them.

Same goes for Super Wing Commander. Definately the best version of this game is on the 3DO with exception to the PC.

I'm a 3do fan, and played it quite a bit in the mid-90s at a good buddy's house. However, I hadn't played it in a very long time until just a few years back when I finally got one. Having played around 50 or so games for it at this point, these are my ten favorites. I think it's a console worth owning, but your mileage may vary.

Return Fire
I had never played or even heard of this game until I picked it up locally in a lot of 3do games a couple years back, and I immediately fell in love with it. A perfect match up of strategy and action, you control a fleet of military vehicles in what is essentially a game of capture the flag. The hook is that you need to assess your different vehicles' strengths and weaknesses to figure out which one is best for each enemy attack. Of course, if you're not careful, you'll get your chopper shot down during an attack on a tall fortress and get stuck trying to get the job done in your jeep. So while the strategy can put you in the best position to succeed, good action gaming skills (dodging, aiming, etc) are still necessary to win. The maps are often creative as well, and there is an additional map pack available for it, but I haven't gotten that yet.

You'd think that this game was designed for PC and then ported to consoles when you see the genre and general gameplay, but I swear it plays so intuitively with a controller that it may well have been a 3do original.

Wing Commander 3
This game combines space shooter with point and click adventure, and it really hits the sweet spot for me. The flying missions are really fun and play well, while the time at the bases and such in between flight missions are also interesting. You can interact with different things and choose your dialogue with different characters. So instead of just watching a movie play out in between the gameplay like in most modern games of this style, you have much more control over the story. But yeah, the meat of the game is in the flying missions, and they are very well done and fun.

The game featured the talents of actors Mark Hammil, Malcolm McDowell, Jonathan Rhys-Davies and former pornographic actress Ginger Lynn, among others, so that aspect of the game is a big step up from the average FMV games of that era. There was clearly a big budget in place for this game.

Road Rash
While Road Rash II on the Genesis is still my favorite game in the series, this one is awesome and one of my favorite games on the console. The biggest factor that sets it apart from the Genesis games in my opinion, is the smoothness. When you move from a 16 bit to 32 bit console, this is the type of upgrade in graphics and game engine that you expect. But when all the smoke clears, I'm just a sucker for the Road Rash series as a whole. I love them all. This one is as fun as any of them, and one of my most played games on the 3do.

Star Control II
Exploring a vast universe, meeting and interacting with all sorts of alien races, making friends or enemies with them, taking on adventures and quests, landing on planets and moons in different galaxies, building up your ship and amassing a mighty armada, capturing alien creatures to take biopsy samples of them like evil scientists, et cetera, etc, etc. Jeebus, this game is incredible. It's as if you're Captain Kirk, only it's so much better than any licensed Star Trek game I've ever played. There's just so much to do in this game, very engrossing. And I love pouring over the thick manual and massive physical map that came with it. So much love and detail went into the development of this game and it shows.

The Need for Speed
Excellent driving simulation that still holds up, not only because it is fun and plays well, but also because it is unique compared to the way driving games are made nowadays. This game is in the mold of the 80s PC Test Drive games, but with brilliant graphics, and a more realistic, interactive approach that was novel for the time. And I love the 90s attitude with the tough guy talking crap to you wanting to race you. When they came out with the Saturn and PS ports later, they changed the game style to make them more arcadey and the game definitely lost what made the 3do original such a new and unique console experience.

Theme Park
I loved the Genesis game, and rented it many times. So much so, that my parents took notice and got it for me for Christmas or my birthday one year. But after my fried got a 3do and I played that version, I realized the limitations of my copy by comparison. Short of playing it on a high end mid 90s PC with a mouse, the 3do version is as good as Theme Park gets.

Shock Wave 2
The first game was fun and looked good, but this sequel raised the bar dramatically. It's the equivalent of the first Virtua Fighter on the Saturn compared to VF2. Shock Wave 2 is yet another 3d space ship shooter, of which there are no shortage of on the console, but this one is of a high quality and one of the best in the genre. It also has a ton of high quality FMV chock full of b-movie actors and sets. I have a soft spot for those early 90s direct-to-video sci-fi cheese fests, and the story of this game is straight out of that era and aesthetic. So I admit that this game probably has a limited appeal for the average gamer, but it really hits the spot for me. And while these types of games were seemingly a dime a dozen in the 90s, this one is definitely one of the best that the genre has to offer.

Cannon Fodder
I realize now that this game was ported to every console under the sun, but in the US back at the time of release, we didn't get it on the Genesis or SNES like other regions, so I only knew it as a 3do or Jaguar game. I played the Jag version at a buddy's house a few times back when it was a new game and really liked it. The 3do version is great and the game can be a real time sucker for those who like real-time strategy games that make you think and manuever while on the move and under attack. It holds up well.

Star Wars Rebel Assault
My experience with this game began at a buddy's house when it was brand new. He had a nice PC with a flight stick, and we played the crap out of it. I had never seen anything like it at the time. While I had played stuff like After Burner at the arcade, the most advanced flight game experience in the home for me had probably been Captain Skyhawk on the NES. I couldn't believe the quality of the graphics and the interaction with characters talking to you. This was 1993 I believe. Well, years later, I got a copy of it for the Sega CD, and I was wildly unimpressed. What a blurry, pixellated mess with just awful controls. That was not the Rebel Assault that I remembered. Once I got a 3do a few years back, this was one of the first games I sought out to revisit, and yes, this is what I remember. Excellent graphics, good controls, fun gameplay. In my mind growing up, this was the standard for 3d space shooter games, and it is still great fun to play today.

Crash n Burn
I honestly don't remember playing this one during the original 3do run. Perhaps I played it on demo at a store, but my 3do buddy didn't have it, so it wasn't a pack-in with his FZ-10. The game plays sort of like a precursor to Wipeout, but with the Twisted Metal-esque ability to shoot missiles and such at your competitors. Graphically, it's an impressive 3d racer for it's time, although it certainly looks a bit rough compared to the games that would come out subsequently on the Playstation just a few years later. But the gameplay is still a lot of fun, and your vehicle controls well. I love the little vignettes in between the races and the crazy looking characters who are your competitors have lots of cheesy things to say which really adds to the game's charm.
