8bit game that scared the hell out of you?

Recommended Posts

So randomly I was thinking of some wonderful 8bit games and one of my all time favorite was Rescue Mission, or Rescue on Fractulus... or Behind Jaggy Lines.. there were several titles for the same game.

But I also remember the time my brother and I were playing it and we did not know thatf Aliens would also come knocking on your door when you tried to rescue a downed pilot. Sure enough that ugly mofo popped up and we both fell back and out of our chairs screaming. I can't think of any moment after that where that happened to me since.

Same- the Fractalus alien jump scare.

Only other game that comes to mind is Maxwell Manor- but not really scary, but nice and creepy

It is an epic jump scare. You get complacent when you land, open the hatch and wait a bit for the pilot to make his way to you. Sitting there, taking a drink after killing all the ships and landing.. then suddenly loud alarms and this ugly dude breaking your ship apart! yeah, we died because we were on the floor...

Encounter... first time playing the game, not sitting on a roll chair. Backward movement stopped immediately ;)

Asylum freaked me out. That first image of the lunatic jumping up in my face kinda fucked me up.

Ha, that game... We couldn't figure out how to move initially. Kept trying the typical 'north, forward, walk'. It wasn't until my cat jumped up onto the keyboard then to this shelf on the desk that it liked to watch from and we started moving around did we figure out you had to move via the arrow keys!

Just don't look up!

I was thrilled and amazed when I learned that Encounter had a version for the Atari ST too. I should play both of them more, loved Encounter...

I have a little problem with the title, as "scared" means "shock by fear" somehow.

This fits , for me, best to Encounter, as the Missile got closer and closer, the tone higher and higher.... (blam) some pillar stopped me while moving backwards... there really was some fear effect :)

In RoF "scaring" doesn't fit to me, as I was a little shocked by the "unexpected" , looking at some vokabulary books "startled" seems the best fit. OK, if I was drinking some coffee, it could have been immediately spilled ;)

Whatever you want to call it, scared, shocked, startled, etc. Maybe "tense up" best describes games like Battlezone or Encounter when the missles or whatever are racing toward you. Scared/startled fits best for me with Rescue on Fractalus, but I loved it and would try not to jump even after I knew it was coming! These days the Jaggy popping up outside the cockpit still sends a chill up the back of my neck, but I don't jump or jerk anymore. I also still jerk/jump a bit or at least get a chill up the back of my neck whenever I am playing Alternate Reality the City, roaming around and all of the sudden the character encounter music "blares" out all of a sudden. But honestly, no game yet, to this day, has "scared the hell out of me," just the usual surprise/shock/startle thing, though many a game does it well and continues to do it to me.

Wait. NO Game? Like, even on other platforms? Surely you've played the Resident Evil Remake, or the original Silent Hill. Or F.E.A.R. All of those games are piss-your-pants scary.

Yeah, Encounter and Battlezone are more along the lines of 'oh crap oh crap, i'm going to die, run run!' type of panic, more than a fright. The alien popping up and pounding on your window to a loud blaring alarm literally knocked us out of our chairs.

I am now thinking of how epic Rescue on Fractulus would be in VR....

Haha, for me it's Penumbra and it's sequels / similar games by Frictional Games. I haven't finished Penumbra yet because it gives me serious anxiety.

Penumbra was terrifying. Amnesia, also by Frictional, was terrifying. I mean, if you want scary, the list is huge. Hard to believe any committed (pun definitely intended) game-player has NEVER been scared by a game.

Sure, I played Silent Hill games, older R.E. but not the remake, lots of other horror type games, but all those games, and horror movies, might surprise me, startle me, maybe make me jump, but no, none of them are ever piss-your-pants scary or scared the "hell" out of me. in fact, these days they bore the hell out of me, not scare. Same old rehashed crap with different characters. And don't get me started with zombies and vampires, boring...same shit rehashed for the last 30 years of my life. I'm frankly sick of it all.

I think Frictional Games needs to make a VR game. I haven't tried it yet, but Alien Isolation has a VR mod. But that makes it that much more in your face.

When the aliens popped up instead of the astronauts in Rescue on Fractalas it was always surprising. At 2AM with the lights out it was frightening. Dang, the animated aliens were so BIG, too. I don't recall seeing anything else like that.

Going through doors/up stairs in Haunted House was always a high-tension moment. You could run into a ghost on the other side. Then the match goes out, the room is dark and there's lightning -- man, that was scary.

Yes Fractalus was the only one that scared me with the first alien encounter ....and plenty times after.....also the first time that a pilot whithout a green helmet turned out to be an alien got me again......and the time that I let in an alien because I was used to open the door before the pilot actually reached the ship.....the funny thing is that if there is a mothership and you fire the boosters the alien will put up a fight but die in the end.....it's funny because you see nothing on this but some shacking of the screen and the sounds....but you KNEW what was going on......yes that was a time where our imagination still was needed to play video games...

Encounter yep.....same feelings

Fractalus for sure.

Would also mention Tank Commander for the warning sound after which the enemy plane appears. Like, sh*t what just happened here? Ah, I'm dead :/

Ground-hog day?

(Just to recall the very well made spider attack of "Mountain King"!)

I guess you mean "Countermeasure"?

Given the overall style of "Snokie" I find the skull there also a bit "disturbing".
