maibock #1 Posted May 24, 2003 A short list guide to classic games of all consoles you should buy. For example: My wife dragged me to a flea market today after work. Yeah there's the normal guy who has a shop there with inflated prices. Granted he's amusing to talk to, he just prices everything ebay style. Well there was an outside temporary booth with a guy who had "computer games" and I bought about ten 2600 carts for a buck a piece of which I didn't have. What he also had were 5200,7800 and some atari computer games all for 2.50 each. Now if I had known what was common or bettter yet, what people would want, I'd buy them for people, but I have no clue what's a decent deal or not. He had NES stuff(bought a Link II game for a buck and it was shiny gold) genesis stuff(bought a madden 92' which year I needed to complete my Madden collection) for a buck. He had SNES games PS1 games, but again I had no clue what was worth getting or not. Would be cool if I had a list of maybe rare games and up and what would be a steal. I'd rather get them for you guys than have someone else get them.
Ze_ro #2 Posted May 24, 2003 Ah, this was tried a while back and it didn't work out too well. It's hard to pick "best of system" games since everyone has such different tastes. A better idea might be to think up some guidelines, since you'll invariably find stuff that you've never heard of. It's better to work off of instinct and experience instead of memorization anyways. It's also much better since you'll be more likely to make decisions on the spot rather than going home to check. For example: The majority of games for a system that are first party (eg. by Sega for a Sega system) are usually good and worth getting. [*]Games that sound bad often are. For example, "Mario is Missing" or anything that sounds kiddy like "Color A Dinosaur" (Yes, that is a real game for the NES. Yes, it's bad.) [*]Games based on movies are often bad. Some exceptions are the Jurassic Park games, and Goldeneye. [*]If you've heard of the game, then there's a good chance that it's worth getting... otherwise you probably wouldn't have remembered it. The exception being of course when you've only heard about had BAD it is... like Superman 64. [*]In a related rule, if you've heard of the game, that probably means that it's popular enough that it's fairly common, so don't spend a lot of money on it unless you know otherwise. [*]If the title is obscure, or based on a product of some sort, there's a good chance that it's rare, and quite possibly bad. Few "product placement" video games are any good... although the 7-Up Spot games looked good to me. [*]If the cartridge has a special quality to it, such as a different color plastic or an unusual shape, it's quite possibly rare. Pirate games are often in unusual cases, especially for the NES. [*]Almost no sports games are rare. The only ones that are remarkable are "unusual" sports games like Mutant League Football, where they didn't make different versions for different years. That's all I can think of for now. --Zero
